BT Broadband out, Vodafone at home Broadband in !

Featured Replies

Just ditched BT Broadband after a long and painful wait for my contract to end. When I rang to ask for a MAC code, I was told that the person could not generate one as their computer was playing up. They said they would transfer me to one of the technical guys. Guess where I ended up . . . . SALES !! After pretending I was transferred there by mistake and trying to give me what I have cheaper, he finally gave up and generated a MAC code himself  Hmm !!

Anyway, my reasons given were:

a) Poor line speed which fluctuated wildly

B) Persistant total outages

c) Rubbish hardware (Home hub) of which I have had 3 and ended up replacing it for an aftermaket one.

d) Rubbishy low skilled support based in India

I have gone with Vodafone as I am a payig contract customer. I know it's a bit late now, but anyone any experience with them for broadband?

I will get no limit downloads (FUP), up to 8MB, and FREE anytime landline calls for £14 per month plus I pay them the £11 line rental instead of BT.

The BT one is £26 + £11

we are now on tiscali, seems good

My parents use BT and I couldn't praise their tech support enough. Granted all Indian but very helpful and did most things remotely which is ideal for them.

Isnt every broadband helpdesk these days?

Been with BT for ages with no problems, never been without service:thumbup: Not the cheapest but it works.

I almost went with Virgin this year but they didn't seem to offer much more what with BT doing the "Vision Replay TV" (poor mans Sky +) for £4.50 per month.

Sounds like you got a good deal, Hope it all runs smooth for ya:thumbup:

Those with BT do a search for 'BT + Phorm'. Not cool

Aside: O2 are doing some very good deals for customers at the moment

we looked around for a while and if you want unlimited downloads and decent speed but don't have a LLU exchange then we found tiscali to be the cheapest and so far we have had absolutely no issues at all. :)

belcher,

unless your exchange is unbundled and has vodafone hardware installed, I hate to tell you this but you will still have all the same issues you had with BT broadband, because the vodafone connection will be run through BTs network.

If your exchange is not yet unbundled, the only difference is who bills you and how much, the infrastructure is exactly the same.

How do I find out if my exchange is unbundled?

The issues are not all about the quality of the line though. It's the BT Home Hub (door stop) that keeps failing or just locking up, the poor support, and the overall deal (only get evening and weekend calls included but only through the Home Hub - which does not work, and is in a box somewhere). The Vodafone deal gives me anytime free calls, UK support, 25% off calls to moby's, and a decent recognised router (Netgear). If the line speed is the same (which I guess it will be), then I can live with it for now.

Cheers

we have a home hub thats a bit rubbish too.

If you're an Orange mobile contract user, then for £5 you can get unlimited net upto 8meg!

OK, so it's Orange, but for £5 cant grumble too much. If I was paying full whack, then the sluggish moments would hack me off.

if your not on an unbundled exchange you can't.

i have discovered this issue since moving house, a lot of these super dooper cheap BB suppliers can't do a thing for me as i don't have an unbundled exchange, i have sky TV and could have had BB for free but no i have to pay £17 a month.

This is a great website to find out about your exchange.

As Ben says these cheap and free deals are only any good if you have LLU (Local Loop Unbundling).

Ben - Sky should offer you the connect package for £5 pm as long as you tell them you are willing to commit to their service when available.

thats all well and good but i don't like their limits and we have no planned date for 21cn or whatever its called :(

It's not the 21CN you want just LLU. People who just moved in next door but one from us have got the Connect at £5pm. I was on Connect for a year before we moved and I was never placed under any limits or restrictions.

no planned date for 21cn or whatever its called :(

22CN now.

ahh, i thought that the 21cn and LLU went hand in hand :)

still no date on either the BT official site or that one you linked to(that i already knew but cheers  ) about our exchange, apparently they are in talks with suppliers or something.

I've been with vodafone for nearly 18 months now and i cannot fault them one bit.

The speed is always consistant.

The free calls is brilliant providing you remember to hang up after 60 minutes. If i call a mobile number i always use my mobile, that way, i know my bill will be £25/month or there abouts, it also costs to call any 0845 and the like but i think they are local rate or something like that, so its not a fortune unless you call a lot of them.
