Problems with USB devices!!!!!!!

Featured Replies

My new laptop has got me pulling my hair out

Everytime i try to connect something to it via a USB lead in order to upload photos my laptop just ignores it completely.

First i connected my digital camera and it said cannot find 'f' drive or 'insert disc', so i gave up after hours of trying different approaches.

Next i bought a card reader and plugged that in with my memory card from my camera in it and again the laptop couldn't see the device or asked me to 'insert disc into 'f' drive'. I gave up on that one!

Finally i connected my mobile phone and loaded all the 'pc suite' software and it said that no phone was connected even though i was stood looking at the lead that definately was connecting them...... Aaarrrggghhh!!!!!

What am i doing wrong?????

I thought it was maybe a dodgy USB port on the laptop but the mouse works in them both and so does the printer (installed by me.....lol!).

I feel as though there is a command or box ticked somewhere in my laptop that says disable USB ports to photo devices "YES".

Any ideas from you geeky types please???? :o

Check your computer properties -> hardware

Sounds like your USB Mass Storage driver is b0rked

Sounds like the devices might need a driver installed.

For the PCSuite one you did install the software before you plugged in the device I take it.

What laptop/OS you running?

1. OS/Machine

2.you can force Windows XP to detect usb devices; go hardware > device manager> click an item and then press the scan button.

3.has the memory on that particular stick been formatted?

4. have you got a memory stick, besides this memory card from your camera? What was the outcome

5. Did you try this camera's memory card in another machine?

Is it just giving it the same drive letter as one of your other drives?

Check on Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management

I managed to get to disk management, what am i looking for when i get there?

And what does 'borked' mean? It's been mentioned twice now!

Also, i'm running vista premium and since i bought the laptop in november i've not updated anything.

Can someone say in laymans terms, i.e, step by step without using computer jargon or accronyms exactly what i can try please, you're speaking to a complete computer numpty....lol! :o

Disk management - you're looking for duplicate drive names.

Borked - goosed, b*ggered.

The following is for XP so things might be in slightly different places / have different names in Vista.

USB Mass Storage driver - go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager.

Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

Right click on USB Mass Storage Device and select uninstall.

Reboot and then go to Control Panel > Add Hardware. Then you'll have to plough through the options to install USB Mass Storage Device. You may be asked to provide disk, though Windows should have its own set of USB Mass Storage Device drivers.

Hopefully this will solve your problems.
