Any BT engineers on Briskoda?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, can any BT people here give me some advice.

I need to extend the wire that comes into my upstairs window straight off the BT pole that runs up the road. We have had new windows fitted and where the wire has been painted time and time again it's now rather crusty and not long enough to replace the 1st box in a convenient location.

How would I lenthen the wire before the 1st box after it comes into the window. I guess I would have to get BT to do this but am wonding if it would cost a lot.

I thought about cutting the wire and calling them (yes I know the phone would not work lol) and requesting a fix and while the engineer is here asking for him to extend the wire but being without a phone and internet is not an option.

You'll have to call them. You can't do anything with it without breaking the law as any wire before you master socket is BT's property.

You could just ask them and say that your phone line is a bit crackly and noticed the cruddy paint and wondered whether they'd change it (and extend it)

No harm in asking :)

You need these:

Philex 8 Way Junction Box, 32004HS/04

Philex Telephone IDC Insertion Tool, 19880HS/04

Or similar. Determine which colours your line works on from the BT socket, take the front off and one coloured wire should go to pin 2 and another to pin 5, others are spares.

Cut the cable and terminate your line to the connection box using the IDC tool, find yourself a bit of telecoms cable and extend it to wherever you want, connect your new cable to the socket using the tool..

Job should be a good 'un.

Depnds on the engineer, he'll either mark it down as a network fault and it won't cost anything or he'll say it's customer equipment and it'll cost you £125.00 IIRC.

Ok thanks for the info guys, i'll have a think.... don't really want to spend £125 though. :thumbdwn:

You should be able top do it quite easily, just cable up like for like as you take it out the old box. Be carefull not to short out the cables together or indeed to earth though.

I would be very tempted to extend the Pair myself and if BT were to come around just remove the extended pair from the block. It is a simple process and I am sure you cold do it (even I could). Of course this is all ‘theoretical’ as I don’t want the BT police to come after me, but it wouldn’t surprise me to find someone did just this very thing to my phone line:D

I should have added, I believe (according to legend:D) that you would need the 2nd and 5th wire for the extension, as this is the speech and ringing pair and also carries the volts (wire 2 has -50 volts to earth i think)

If you was local I'd come and do it for you, but your 4hours away so sorry

I have a linesmans instrument upstairs (don’t ask) but you live at the wrong end of the country I’m afraid.

A good number to dial if you are ever fiddling with BT lines (not that anyone would) is 17070. it will give you your number and do a line test if you have authorisation. It used to do a ring back check too.

Close but no cigar Lady E. :)

2 and 5 are the normal speech pairs. If you are running an extension off the main box you also need to extend 3 for the ringing.

Also the main box has a capacitor across the 2 terminals and extension boxes have none.

About the limit of my line side knowledge I'm afraid. :o

PS. Is you instrument called a Buttinski?

Strangely enough I think you can get away without the 3rd wire, as one side of the ring is carried on either the 2nd or 5th wire. I’ve certainly wired up a few phones without the 3rd wire (usually because all I have has been a twisted pair (no comments please) and it works fine. I think most phones these days sense the ringing current from line pair So can I have a packet of biscuits instead of the cigar please.

I thought the OP was extending form his main box though.

My instrument is a 701 (I will have to dig it out to confirm) I also have a hand cranked instrument somewhere (pleeeeease no comments on that either)

can you not just buy the wire from maplins or argos and cut off one end and conect it up to the box up stairs and run it through the house or have i got the wrong end of this?

You can get away without the wire on pin 3 if you are using a master socket (yellow capacitor on the socket PCB) as the extension socket or the phone you are plugging in has the ringing cap' built in.

Wiring should be:

Pair of wires from exchange to a master socket (with capacitor) on pins 2 and 5cable going from that socket wired over pins 2 and 5 for speech 3 for bell to a secondary socket (no capacitor) then daisy chain all the way around the house to the maximum REN.

I think he is wiring from the maser socket, so can I still have my biscuits please.:)

Chocolatey Hob Nobs or Tunnocks wafers are fine thank you;):D

Send me your address then.

glad this linkys come up i have a similar problem.

I have just purchased a house in yorkshire and just have a BT wire hanging in the house no BT box at all.

Any BT engineers in yorkshire who can help a fello Briskodian out?

Why not just run an extension cable from the lower half of the NT5 Master face plate. You can do this by crimping the correct wires in and it is also perfectly legal as long as you don't touch the top part of the NT5 socket.

It's the 1st socket I need to move but the wire is not long enough and it's all crusty (the wire). I'd like to extend it then tuck the crusty wire above the new window in a cavity before it's boxed in then run a new cable down the side all neat and tidy to the box below the new window board on the wall.

If that makes any sense. :)

It makes sense, but basically you have two choices:

1) Ask bt to fix the phone line (It gets noisy when it rains doesn't it? ;))

2) Leave the master where it is and don't use it other than to run an extension to where you want the new master to be. If this isn't an option fair enough.

Playing with the line yourself is illegal and can land you with a fine much bigger than £125 or if they were bored even a prison sentence.

I'll ring them tomorrow, I can't goto prison, I'll get raped in the showers. :(

I would decide like this…

…if you are someone who has declared every single Mod that has been done to their car to the Insurance company and if the car is still under warranty admit to the garage that the car is Modded…..then get BT in.

If you haven’t been totally truthful about your car do as suggested above. It isn’t difficult and you can always pull the wires off if a BT Hit Squad comes to your house.

Obviously all the above is a joke as I would not want to encourage naughty behaviour.;)

Well I just called them and they can't tell if it will be chargable until they turn up and by then it's too late as I can't then say I don't want it done as then the charge becomes the callout charge. I told them forget it for now.

I'll hold out for a while for a Herefordshire based BT Briskodian and ask a few friends in town if they know anyone.

Thanks all for your advice. :)
