Turbo Problem

Featured Replies

morning all well here goes

travelling home this morning 4am my car seemed to go flat in power and loads of black smoke out of the exhaust

the only time this as done this before is a burst intercooler pipe but checked this and also when i split my intercooler on the weld with presure

now the car goes in to limp and engine light comes on when i plug my dignostic machine in it says low boost presure, i can reset this then the car turbo kicks in for 5 sec then back to limp:thumbdwn:

still sounds like a hole in the system somewhere rather than a turbo failure...... it boosts agains for a short while then back to limp....

could have missed a split in a pipe somewhere perhaps?

I read that samco are developing the hard pipes for the fabia vRS, maybe worth giving them a call? :)

checked everything but when it boost up still not its was like before the problem its like its holding back

well the samco hose hard pipe may be a good idea for me but i need my car ok first:confused:

:confused:all hoses ok but still no power then about 3000rph loads of black smoke still boost from turbo

any other ideas were to go from here

I hate to say it dude but I think it is the turbo. My car did exactly the same when the turbo failed.

If your sure there is no leak then its likely the turbo is producing less boost then the ECU is requesting so its going into Limp Mode. The seals on the turbo could be on the way out or the VNT is not moving correctly - or too slowly.

was thinking this my self :(

big money then, not re what has been done to the turbo as its jabba sports old car

There is really only one thing you can do and thats take it straight back to Jabba for them to assess the situation.

would do but im over 160 miles away from them neat liverpool will not make it there lol

all pipes checked

intercooler no splits ps dont get a pro alloy 1 split mine 2 times on weld

when for a run in car still no power but turbo works can here it and feel it a little then around 3500rpm loads of black smoke , like its getting 2 much air

Give jabba a ring in the morning and tell them whats the problem then see what the say......proberly the best bet as its there ex car

UP DATE

after driving for 20 min still no ecu lights on ,but still same problem , so is this defo my turbo and were around liverpool can i get this tested

2nd run ecu light came on falt code reads turbo charger underboost,

same falt code as when i had a split pipe ,

also were my turbo used to kick in around 2000rpm now it seems to be more like 2500- 3000rpm before i can feel it working

any ideas would help:confused:

Hmmmm... I can but offer similar advice.... I am sure Jabba will try and help out, ring them tomorrow and go from there.

hi

Have you had fuel pressure checked?? Not used to these engines + management but some vehicles when supplied with low pressure fuel cut the turbo pressure down thus inducing a low boost fault??!! because otherwise lack of fuel and high boost === burnt out valves pistons etc. only a thought

and are the turbo's on these variable vane if so maybe a sticking vane??

chris:)

I would get the car vag-com'd first. :)

just a thought could this not be my egr valve stuck open , carboned up making me less boost presure

take it to a garage mate, you dont have a clue as to whats causing the problem.

maybe if you joined freedom and posted in the ask a tech section you might get a better response :thumbup:

have tryed to join as i can sell my nitrous kit ect ect but no paypal acount

Your green now, welcome aboard.

As you have said the engine runs with the intercooler pipe off so i dowt its a blockage of the egr valve.

The only thing up that end of the engine would be the anti shudder, but that wouldnt give a neg boost code and the car wouldnt run at all.

I think the only thing to do would be to check all the vac hoses for leaks, check the vac control distribution box (black box on drivers side wing top mount) and then its turbo time.........which is expensive. :o

EDIT Also the map sensors are not very good at handling high boost, mine went not long after and i think jason had problems with them. Might be worth a change to see if it makes a difference??

i no lol hope its not checked the box mate no pipes off , and i was saving for a lsd as well but been made redundent 2 weeks ago grrr i all happens as one s

do you have access to vag com then?

iirc you can test the turbo and actuator with it, runs a cycle through and you can hear the turbo spool up and watch the boost pressure on the measuring blocks

yup its gutting :(

The symptoms would suggest a boost leak rather than a turbo problem, a boost leak would cause excessive smoke and not permit the boost to meet its target, (triggering limp mode)

A turbo shaft failure would result in a huge amount of white smoke as the turbo oil feed pumps oil into the exhaust, if this was the case the sump would be emptied in around 4 mins.

The hybrids are far more durable than the standard units and not prone to shaft failure.

If you’re using the water methanol injection as a secondary injection and the car hasn’t been mapped for it this could cause the boost to spike (possibly blowing a pipe or seal)

Hope this helps you out,

If you get stuck give us a shout,

Luke.

HI ALL had on vag com today no prroblems there

they said my actuator is not moving like it should only just moving

i no this is linked to the turbo vains but no nothing else about this problem were do i go from here

If the actuator is only just oving it means that either:

A) you have a vacumn leak on the pipe that goes from the vac distribution box to the actuator

B) the vac control box is faulty/leaking air

C) the actuator is leaking/ faulty

D) the VNT mechanism is stuck/ seized/ generally broken

So on that, id would be checking that you can move the actuator by hand, and check all the pipe work with regards to leaking vacumn

Good luck
