Starting Problems

Featured Replies

hi can any one help my octavia 19tdi 2002 will start first time in the morning during the day it will not start the engine turns the starter motor sounds as if it is working this only happens sometimes.. 80% of the time it will start as normal one garage says its the starter motor another says its the flywheel and they want loads of moneY to sort it any idears anyone

When it fails to starts does it sound like it wants to start?

Do you find it happens when the car has been only been stopped for a short length of time - say to pop into a news agent, or fill with fuel? Or can it be if the car has been left for a 10+ minutes?

If the former it could be the anti-shudder valve getting stuck shut. This sometimes happens on my 2001 TDi, normally after a 90 minute drive back from work, I stop off for fuel just before I get home, and sometimes I have to hang on the starter key for about 6-10 seconds before it will actually start. That said, since I cleaned up the valve is has not happened again.

hy same here

my car starts but it stops after a sec

then i turn it on again and works ok

Shudder valve thanks everyone

My son has a similar problem on his 1998 1.9 TDI. Whereabouts is the "anti-shudder valve"?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

It's part of the EGR valve which is located at the back of the engine on the left hand side on the pipe which comes back up from the intercooler - top is round and metal in between plastic/rubber tube and the inlet manifold. If you take the pipe going into it off on the LHS it will probably be full of black gunge.

I did have a picture but I can't find it now.
