Brake light switch - which one?

Featured Replies

Hiya,

My brake light switch is up for renewal, EPC light, failing / no brake lights etc.

I phone the garage and they said it could be one of a couple of types.

How do I find out which one it is?

Can I get at it without stripping the facia? The Haynes manual makes it sound like you have to strip away all the lower / right part of the facia around the drivers side simply to get at the brake light switch and connector - sounds a tad drastic!

The car is a BV plate 1.4MPI 8 valve - registered Jan 2002 if that's any help.

BTW - the garage was asking if it was the two pin or not as well, I gather from reading threads here that there are a couple of possible part no's?

Steps 5-8 of this will help you get to your brake light switch. you can see the switch on the right-hand side of the pic for step 9. You should be able to remove it in the same way as described for the clutch switch (step 9 also). As it's knackered anyway, you may get away with whipping it out, taking it to the garage, and just asking for one the same. Otherwise, I'm sure someone on here will be able to help with the appropriate part number...

Hope this helps! :)

PS: The car the guide's based on is my wife's 51-plate MPi. It looks as though there are more than two pins on her brake light switch, so yours probably isn't the two-pin type...

The only part info I can find, naturally for here I guess, is for the VRS which is 1J0 945 511 F.

Can anyone tell me if that is also right for the 'std' 1.4MPI or do different models have different switches. Sorry to sound thick here. :o

It would appear from this thread that the part number is age-related rather than model-related. I daresay yours predates the chassis number 6Y-3-725552 quoted as the cut-off, in which case you'll need the part number you already found, which is an update of the one quoted in the thread!

So yes, that one! ;)

Assuming I'm reading it right, I think my chassis no. is

TMBNB46Y723399849 which, I'm guessing from the numeric part starting 'Y72...' is lower than the one you quoted meaning it's a prior chassis version as mine is 2002 and the cut off was 2006? Sounds logical anyways. :)

Yeah, I think you've got that right!

Well, much bloody use that was. :(

The garage have said they gave the part number to VW who just turned round and said "Is it the two or the 4 pin" regardless of the fact they have the damned part number.

Looks like I'm taking the facia off tonight, ahh well.

Sorry to hear that! :thumbdwn:

I'm not sure about the 1.4 MPI, but this is from Fabia-vrs.com - Home Page The "replacement Part Number is 1J0 945 511 F" which is a green-coloured switch that seems to have 4 pins.

Here's a link : Fabia-vrs.com - Brake Pedal Switches

Note : This info is for the Fabia vRS and I don't know if this part is common to all Fabias.

HTH and doesn't cause more confusion.

Sorry : just noticed you have that part-number already - I thought it was a different part-number

Online spareparts catalogue for AUDI/Volkswagen/Skoda/Seat lists these for 2002 Fabia

1J0 945 511D switch - brake light / F >> 6Y-3-725 552*

3B0 945 511A switch - brake light / F >> 6Y-3-725 553*

A Skoda dealer should be able to give you the correct part based on your chassis number.

You'd think wouldn't you.

I suppose it depends on if it's a muppet at the parts counter, or maybe they are just being difficult because rather than taking it to a dealer, it's going through a 'local' garage. The chaps at the garage say they have this discussion every time, I get the impression they aren't exactly impressed with how the official dealership is being run.

Well that was a bust.

Could I heck get the darn hard plastic pedal cover off. Took off about 6 torx screws but still couldn't find any way to actually get the thing off. Flummoxed.

Never ever seen anything on them except for a 4 wire switch. The Fabia is drive by wire (no throttle cable with an EPC light), it will be a 4 wire, now changed to a green switch about £8.

Thanks folks, I'm just going to say 4-wire, I'm guessing that the 2-wire maybe the pre Aug. 2001.

Was going to try and get the facia off again today but typically it's piddling down. I was assuming you could just pull off the black plastic bit at the very bottom that surrounds the pedals but I'm wondering now that you need to take the whole thing off. Well, not the whole thing, just that bit on the drivers side.

Was so much easier when it cars just had some stiff upholstery held on with clips :P (old git here ;) )

I have one here which is 6Q0 945 511

It's not Green but Black - Not sure if it's the latest revision but it was made 08/01/08.

Sorry - my fault! :o You need to follow steps 1-8 of the TG I linked to in my earlier post...

Ahh, yes, that little screw at the top - no wonder I couldn't pull it down hehe.

Ahem, well, lunch hour approacheth so I'll see if I can fit it in then. In theory, it looks like it should only take a couple of minutes. (In theory  )

Well, deffo a 4-wire switch, so ordered.

That 'push and take out' lights switch is a joke, had to resort to brute force but it all came away at the end.

No wonder I couldn't shift that black plastic bit, it's all one piece hehe. Ahh well, done it once now so needs must in the future I know what to do. :)

Glad you got it sorted!

Likewise, your help was very gratefully received and at least I'm more familiar with how to strip that area now.

The only thing I struggled with was the actual round switch for the lights. I was wary of breaking it so ended up leaving it in situ and just removing the cable. I had assumed the whole thing came out en-mass, not that it had an "inner" section. It was just too bottom clenching pulling at the switch - seemed to require far too much brute force and I'm not the most delicate of folks, (read, big klutz ;) ).

Steps 5-8 of this will help you get to your brake light switch.

Seems to have disapeared

Many of the old links do not work since the site was updated a few months back.

The trick with the light switch is to push it in and turn it to the sidelight position, this releases the clips which hold it in and the pull it out.

I've found that they CAN be a bit of a problem, I've only ever managed to get my B5 Passat one out once when I didn't really need to take it out, on the other hand, myu wife's Polo 9N one can be removed very easily - anytime. I'd think that the latch is not getting lifted clear so that is stopping it being released - try , try, try again!
