CV joint?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

hope you can help me. When going round right-hand bends / roundabouts, at about a 30-degree steering angle or so, i get a constant, rhythmic knocking from the front-left of the car. It's been suggested it could be a CV joint?

Also, she's due for MOT in a few weeks, should i just wait and get a list of faults at MOT and put her through a re-test or get this fixed first?

Cheers

Adrian

Id get it fixed first, if its knocking then it needs doing asap.

Deffo get it done first or you mite not get to the mot if it lets go

Reckon it's def the CV joint then? As i say, happens when goin round right-handers or when slightly steerin right and lift the foot off the gas

is there a "clunk" when you change gear or accelerate? if so then deffo CV considering your other symptoms.

my left outer joint was making very odd faint clicking noises during any rotations, i simply peeled the boot back and filled it with grease. been nice and quiet and smooth for 2 more years now :)

It's when goin on a steady steer round a right-hander sometimes, it sounds like a regular clicking and sounds a bit 'loose.'

What you've described sounds very much like a CV joint to me too. Another member described the NI MOT appointment system to me, and on that basis I'd fix anything I knew about before presenting, cos otherwise you could have an illegal car for several weeks.

Over here there's around 8 - 10 official centres where you can the MOT done, no small garages are authorised like the mainland. Test is £30.50, if you fail u get a list of faults to rectify, which get tested on the re-test for £19. Usually about a 2-3 week wait for them here, altho cancellations are handy enough sometimes.

Thanks for the help guys

 An MOT is over £50 over here!!!

i know a local big garage with excellent reputations that does MOTs for £20, and retests for £20. Must be perfectly legal because they always have police traffic cars in there!

I pay £40, retests are free.

For an MOT retests they're only permitted to charge a "partial" retest fee I believe.

I think some of these cheap MOT places are just after telling you your shocks need replacing and brake discs and pads etc etc when they don't. I'm happy paying £42 and £21 retest to a place that doesn't do any work so have no reason to fail my car for the sake of it to get themselves work.

nope, for the past two years and with my felicia and several other cars all passed when they should have no problems

:)I run an independent garage/MOT centre and charge £39.50 for MOT's with free retest.

No hard sell for repairs either!

jimbob (yeah anno its ade but ade-bob sounds weird ;) ) someone described a test for Cs to me...

jack it up on whichever corner its at, grab your driveshaft, and see if it has play front to back. it should move in and out, but any other movement isn't too good. it should have a slight rotational movement on it but not very much. then you'll know if its badly worn :)
