Mobiles - have they peaked?

Featured Replies

I currently have a Sony Ericsson K750 mobile which has been a good servant over the past few years but the joystick is driving me mad now - bad design to have something open like that on a piece of equipment that traditionally lives in pockets.

So I've been looking around for a new mobile but nothing really takes my fancy - they all seem to be much of a muchness. The SE K800/K810 still have a joystick, the K850 I've heard isn't the most reliable. Nokia N95 is too big for my liking. Maybe the N82 (the non-slidey 95) would be ok.

Anyone else feel the same about mobiles these days? Any suggestions?

I'd love a slightly trimmed down (size wise) version on a 6310i.

the K850 I've heard isn't the most reliable.

I think they have sorted it now with new firmware. Im on my third, which i have had for a couple of months now, and so far problem free. The first two were both sent back within a week.

The biggest failing of mobiles these days (imho) is battery life. So many applications and features, wifi, GPS, MP3 player video camera etc, I just wish the manufactures would add a couple of mm to the phone size in order to give us a noticeable increase in longevity.

:iagree:

Whatever happened to Lithium-Polymer technology they were starting to use way back? If I could get 18 days standby out of a 6310i in 2002, then I'm sure it could be possible to improve on the 2-day max of my N95...

We might end up with those car battery types from the eighties again:rofl:

I had a K750i

Loved that phone

Gone back to using an XDA though.

Got a 6310 for work, 6310i for private, and generally they do me well. That said bluetooth sucks the battery empty pretty sharpish - so I tend to have the charge lead plugged in whilst in the car. Does kinda make not having a cradle less attractive though :(

Get a K770i - it's similar to the 750 but vastly better in every way

My missus has a K850i and it's been fine. I used to have a K700i and the joystick drove me round the bend when it started to fail.

The K850i is a big phone though. A tad smaller than the N95, but not much.

i used to be in the mobile phone game until 18 months ago. i was selling them for over 3 years. i saw some great developments in that time. now although the batteries give out lots of power (more so than most older types) the difference is the extras on the phone. texting is one of the most draining you can do on a phone! sometimes its even more juicy than phoning, this is due to haveing to light up the keys, the screen and then finally send the text.

that plus BT, wifi, etc etc means they wont have such good battery lives until they sqeeuze a bit more go out of them. i remember seeing a prototype mini engine thing that ran on methanol or something, and was hyped to replace batteries! :)

but they seemed to have peaked imoa. i remember when i was after a different phone every month or so. but now im looking around and i still cant find a phone that i would want over my n95!

the 8gb version does look good, but its bigger, and the newer n96 looks and sounds great! but sounds to be bigger still.

i think my next contract will be with someone who can give me a free n95 on tmobile with a free ps3 ;)

I used to sell phones as well , but that was 8 years ago when a Nokia 7110 was state of the art

I thought liquid polymer batteries could be quite dangerous and can explode! And are easily damaged if you let them run too flat. :(

Yup , that was actually availble in 2000 IIRC , as The Matrix was out the year before and this was always referred to as The Matrix Phone despite the one in the film being a modded 8110.

When I started selling phones you could get a Motorola M400 on Mercury One 2 One with free evening and weekend calls , and 35% national coverage :D

If I could get one that still worked I'd love another 7110

I also remember the launch of NoRange and selling shed loads of them.

A friend worked for them and had a large hand in writing their billing system at the time. He earnt enough to virtually retire in his 30s.

I've got some cradles in the loft if you want them ;)

I still have a 7110... I loved it! Why don't they make phones like that anymore?? :D

My favourite phone has to be the Nokia 8210, I even had the LEDs changed from green to blue. :D

I decided to buck the trend and didn't go for the N95 as I think it's just too big I went for the 7500 Prism (from an N80). I've found the keypad a little awkward but other than that it does everything I need. :)

Gimme a shout, might be of interest ;)

If they weren't jar-jared up with pointless bling like that which no-one over the age of 10 has ever actually asked for IME...

Phew.Thought it was just me

Hello!

A bit late maybe... but my missus has got one! Battery is a bit loose and not sure it holds its charge for too long but it's unlocked and works fine...

I use the wifi at work, it acts as my main mp3 player, it acts as my only digital camera, and I use it as a mobile gaming machine.

To me, this is what makes a mobile phone. A proper multifunction device, not just something to ring with.

If you just want a phone to ring with and good battery life, then get a Motorola mr20. I had one when they first came out. Battery lasts for over a week, but then you can't fit it in your pocket.
