spray painting!!

Featured Replies

hi all,

looking for some advice.

basically im trying to paint my rear milotec diffuser. i preped the part and used the primer and sanded it all back. left the primer for a day to allow to dry. then painted it with the black magic paint. did several coats. then left to dry for a day. had a look over it and the finish was brilliant, very smooth.

then, came the lacquer, having left it for a day to dry and started to apply the lacquer. 1st coat when on ok, then the 2nd, i started noticing some areas werent looking too good, looked like they were drying a bit grey. as if the primer was showing thru slightly. did a 3rd coat then left it. its now almost dry. some areas are brilliant! but alot have a matt grey ish finish! :( .

any ideas? paint not thick enough? or should i leave the paint to dry more than 24 hours? should i sand the paint before applying the lacquer?

really annoyed with it! spent ages getting a great finish, which i got on parts but with the rest having a matt grey finish it ruins the whole job.

hope someone can help

Its proberbly ok, if the general appearence is ok, let it dry for a week or so. Then try a really good polish and then wax. That should sort you out. If however you've got some runs etc, then get the wet/dry out and try again.

Make sure your lacquer and the paint are compatible. No use using cellulose lacquer on water-based paint etc...

90% seemed to dry well, lower lip was still dull!! going to sand it down tonite and give it a coat of black then leave it a day or 2 before trying the laquer again!

how long should it take for the paint and lacquer to go hard?

If it's dull, either the top coat and laquer have reacted, or the environment was wrong. (Too cold or damp) It should polish up OK, though.

Kenny,

In this sort of weather, if after lacquering you leave it for a week that should be more than sufficient. Then take p1000 wet n dry with plenty of water and give it a good smoothing. Next, use plenty of T-cut or similar polishing compound, and finish with by sealing with wax and it should finish up looking tip-top!

how many coats of primer and black did you give it ?

i'd say 3 coats of primer to make sure its well covered (rubbing back each coat a little before putting the next one on) then 4-5 coats of black and using a light paper rubbing those back as well. 3 coats of laquer should be enough but you'll need to cut it back using a polish and wax it afterwards.

cheers for the help guys, did the number of coats you just discribed nigel, ive just sanded it back so will start again and fingers crossed

best thing to do is take your time, leave each coat of primer (in these conditions) about a day to go off and harden a little... with the black i'd leave it for a couple of days just to make sure your getting good coverage and the paints setting nicely.
