My polo might get written off, so I'm trying to decide what to get (this poll could be VERY 1 sided!). :D

I 'personally', from that list would go for the Mk1 1.9tdi Fabia, but my reasons would probably be different to yours.

However.. you seem to have forgotten to add (for similar money) the option of a TVR Cerbera to that list :)..

I chose the Mazda 2 based purely on looks. However looking at the figures, its a little bit slower than the new Fabia 1.4 TDI and quite a bit slower than the Fabia 1.9TDI...

I suppose it depends on what you are after, but based purely on looks, I'd probably get the Mazda

edit. just been looking at prices and for the same money as the Mazda, you could've bought this in an auction i was watching yesterday with only 179 miles on the clock...

My insurance company just said: "keerrrrrching"! :D:cool:

Sat in one of those at a motor show when I was a bit younger - couldn't see much out the front, sides or back! :D

Probably in this order: economy, comfort, boot space, security, performance. Not too fussed about equipment levels.

Looked at a punto 1.3 multijet the other day for the Mrs. Quite nice cars. Do you know if they are all in the same tax bracket? The punto is definately in the £35 VEL bracket which can only be a good thing.

The furby 1.4tdi, mazda diesel and punto 1.3 are all tax band b (£35 this year, £30 next year). Hence I'm comparing these 3 - but if I opt for a 2nd hand 1.9tdi then that'll be £110 a year, although this will be offset by the fact it'll be a lot cheaper than buying new.

What about a 2nd Hand Furby 1.4TDI

I'd be swayed for a 2nd Hand Furby 1.9 personally unless you can haggle a fair bit off a new car.

I chose the second option for you mate.

What about a Mk11 Furby 1.9TDI. I have heard that the 1.4 gets good economy around town but the 1.9 is way ahead once the speed increase.

Not the Punto. I know way too many people who've had real problems (not just sensor issues, things like broken gearboxes on 3yo cars) with Fix It Again Tonis to ever recommend buying one.

Special note for Amanda; the Punto in question was built maybe 5 years ago. I'm not just thinking of 1970s FIATs.

Price is an issue here! New Fabia 3 1.9tdi is £13,135 with £120 road tax, fabia 3 1.4tdi is £12,145 with £35 road tax. If I had the money, I'd be opting for an Octy 4x4 estate! :D Got a mk1 1.9 in the family, so the 1.4tdi will probably be the way I go if I buy new (depending on what happens to the polo and if i can get the finance!!! :D). Otherwise I'll be settling into the long task of finding a used mk1 1.9tdi elegance.

Thanks. I was wondering about the fix it again tomorrow. That settles it for me - it will be a skoda i'll be looking at. Got VW/skoda blood running through my veins after all!

Now that looks good! ;) No space for the shopping though! :D

Well, no more space for the shopping. Marcoses are FE RWD.

I voted for the fiat, but I'd suggest the 1.9 130 bhp..... you get much more car for your money... although you don't get the £35 a year road tax the 1.3 gives you ;)

Forget them and get this:thumbup:

I was thinking about a toyota aygo petrol at first. But I love driving diesels a lot more! :D And for the little bit extra cash, I'll get a decent sized boot and more space! :D Pricewise, I think the furby makes sense. From the poll results, most folk reckon on a 2nd hand 1.9tdi, so I'll probably nab SWMBO's one and get her a newer 1.4tdi. I'm far too generous! :o That was her suggestion in the first place as I usually have a big grin on my face when I drive the 1.9. :D Although, we will go and test drive a mazda 2 before making a decision.

On a serious note if you buy new drive a really hard bargain, the stealers are struggling to sell cars. might be worth looking at secon hand to save a bit, you will get a lot more for your money

Rather than listen to ken, I'd talk to sharkrider who actually has a current model punto ;)

  • Author

He recommended the 1.9 punto - but that might be a bit much for me. A bit reluctant to leave my VW/Skoda roots behind....! ;) Will go get some test drives arranged.
