Cleaning up Rusted Brake Discs

Featured Replies

Whats the best method, short of taking them off and whapping them on a Lathe?

Mine currently look like this, and i have a feeling they might not work toooooo well in that state...

The Discs are all pretty new too, infact the rears had less than a month of use before the Car was temporarily laid up...

Cheers in advance...

Just drive it- carefully to start with!

The fronts look absolutely fine. They will be clean within a few miles. The rears might take a little longer.

Just use them

Mine go rusty on a regular basis (only really drive her at weekends). I find a good drive tends to clean them up - they'll be a wee bit noisy for a bit, but rust on the discs is nothing to worry about.

wire cup brush in an electric drill should take the worst off

wouldn't advise that :-s - I'd go with the others...drive it... carefully...

the problem with driving it is that the pads will get glazed by the rust, hence clean off the worst rust before driving

That amount of rust will be gone in 5 miles of normal braking I reckon, it looks like just light surface stuff. If it doesn't work what have you lost, you'd have to buy new discs and pads anyway

I agree,

However you get the rust off (I wouldn't use power tools, personally :smirk: ), cook / bed them properly once they're clean as per this article to coat the disc with friction compound which will mitigate the rusting to an extent, and also improve the braking performance...

HTH

I'd be worried power tools would leave permenant pitting or damage to the disk.... Just sound a bit cowboy, thats all..
