Gatso's flashing and head on, do they work?

Featured Replies

Just wondering the general consensus... been reading a massive post on saab forums as to whether gatso's can get you head on or not?

Now... some facts first, - we are definitely talking about a GATSO... not a forward facing truvelo.

Yes... there are lines on both sides of the road but they never turn this one around (maybe to stop people going past on the wrong side of the road and avoiding being caught?)

And yes, it did flash twice... although I was only going 48 in a 40 :-( ... at 2 AM grrr....will this be 3 points if it has worked? Or will it not work? Or should I contest it as being blinded in the face isn't very safe

I can safely say they do not "Do you" going through them the wrong way.

Due to my own extensive research !!!!!

By the time the second flash goes you r out of view of the lens

hmm I hope so... but I wasn't going very fast which is what worries me. My friends been flashed before and he never heard anything. Maybe if I'm going to speed through them the wrong way I should have done it properly...Thanks for the help

Your right, they dont get you. When REAL they have an electronic Bar in them to stop oncoming traffic triggering it and wasting the film. To save money, the bar is taken away with the rest of the electronics to put in a live camera.

Now, I believe that they dont get you in this way cos of the flash going off in your face, which can be quite dangerous, although I will stand corrected on that one.

Future camera's, even GATSO's may have the infra red flash (ala truvelo) and so they may be designed to get traffic in both directions.

I used to make quite a habit of going through the GATSO's on the A34 Kidsgrove the wrong way to set them off while other traffic was passing :mischief: . It only took speeds of about 34 to set them off going the wrong way.

Not home office approved for head on, i use to trigger loads in a lorry especially head on as it didnt like the shape of the front when on the limit and you have a refridgerator fan whizzing around too.

They will trigger head on , but only when empty of film.

Nothing to worry about

:eek:thats not very friendly!

back on topic i've seen a few flash people coming towards them. still i'd rather not take the chance.

after being caught once im much more observant with camera vans too!

Been through loads of GATSO's head on and made them flash, a set of ladders on the roof seems to make them more likely to do it, can't think why that is . There is a notorious GATSO in Brighton I have set off a few times while oncoming.

Don't confuse them with the TruVelo cameras or you will end up looking like an ar$e with points on your licence :D

Even if they could measure your speed oncoming you are not on the secondary check marks so it wouldn't hold much water.

I was worried when i went through facing onto a gatso and it flashed twice.I phoned Dorset Safety Camera Partnership and they said nothing to worry about its the type of camera they have fitted in them and Gatso,s are for rear end only.

They have lines on both sides of the road, not too worried and starting to feel better. It just seems random that they flash sometimes and don't others.

Interesting point about them only flashing when film is empty, why is that?

My friends been through this one loads and set it off only twice... normally he does 70 through it just to prove it doesn't work... hmm

Can State that GATSO cameras do NOT take head on ..... but .... TRUVELLO cameras do and no requirement for check marks as they work by sensors in the road surface a set distance apart ;)

truvello do need secondary checks in the way of the two white lines just in front of the loops in the road. they use this to prove they were speeding to and not just triggered by debris on the road. if you were speeding your car will be over the markings.

I like truvello cameras when I had My Motorbike :) Popping wheelies through them at over the speed limit is the best LOL!!

I was flashed head on by a gatso, at around 68 in a 60!!! i was fuming, never heard anything about it though and that was a good few months ago
