Is the pd160 intake worth the money

Featured Replies

Hi all

Basically I'm getting my fabia remapped in the next couple of weeks and Ive read about people buying the pd160 intake but it seems the price has went up alot, just wondering is it worth the money and has anyone seen any difference since fitting one

Thanks

Put it this way....I payed £70 ...fitted it..removed it..sold on eBay ...I can think off better ways of spending the money ,perhaps it would be benifical with big power but I thought it was a waste of time....my opinion anyhow

My current opinion is that it's not worth it. Was worth a flutter at £40ish. Not at nearly enough £100.

If you intend sorting intake and exhaust anyway, maybe a PD160 could go on the list. It's a very expensive pipe though, that incidentally chaffs at some of the pipework on the nearside of the engine. :)

I fitted one and found that it reduces the ammount of soot it chucks out when i floor it.

Food for thought.... Why does it come fitted as standard on the PD160 engine if it offers no benefit over the PD130 pipe?

There's no hard evidence to suggest it offers any benefit nor is there any to suggest it doesn't, it's all down to how you feel, but, as on most forums... Just because some of the 'almighty untouchable' members on here state that the PD160 pipe does nothing then all of the other members start bleeting the same thing.

I bought the PD160 pipe (£30.00) and I noticed a difference. Ok, it doesn't make a hugeeeee difference but my car seems less smokey and more 'revy'. Is this a placebo effect? Quite possibly, but until it is proved otherwise I would say get one or a similiar (bigger) intake.

To answer your question... Is it worth nigh on £100.00? No. Is it worth a punt at half of that? Yes.

Real world test below, without a remap or performance upgrade its reduces performance, the reason the car has a 130 intake is because the engine is designed for that amount of airflow

Thanks for the comments everyone :)

If your getting it remapped why not do a dyno run with and without but make sure there's no heat soak etc as a few bhp could well be within dyno tolerances and not give a true reading.

OP states he is getting the car remapped...

Yes and the information posted helps him decide on whether to get one after map

I'd like someone to do a dyno before with consistent variables to put to dead the debate.

The PD160 intake is designed to help the car breathe easier at high altitudes in the Pyrenees where SEAT tested it, it offers no tangible benefits in the UK but it's your money so it's your decision if you're going to be easily parted from it. Those who have parted with their money will swear blind it helps but all the hard evidence suggests they are merely being gullible.

Crikey are they really £100 odd now? I remember when they were £16.... I'm sure there are probably better things you could do with that money to improve performance.

Was considering it for mine too!! But £100 is alot of buck to pass over for just a bit of plastic. Id save that £100 towards a remap!! well that what im doing :)

I piece of large bore silicon hose could probably be squished into that shape, £10 tops maybe...

What hard evidence are you referring to?

Luckily I only parted with £30.00, if it didn't make a noticable difference then I would have binned it.

I was referring to articles such as the one you just dismissed. As I've often stated there is no intake restriction, bigger is not better just because it looks like it should be. You are the one who should explain to the rest of us exactly how such a modification is expected to make any difference. Where is all that extra power coming from? How does it work please?

Surely this is something that has to be answered by a tuner, definitively as that seems to be the only area that there is room for improvement.

As has been pointed out, just throwing something on the car and praying it will improve performance, is optimistic at best.

As that article suggests or proves, it needs the modification in combination with custom tuning to make any potential benefit (if any). So the cost would far exceeds even the pricey £100 to get the parts as you'd need to have the ECU tuned to make best effect

So for that reason, I'm out.

My own opinion is purely anecdotal. However, this guy (the Autospeed guy, not me :) ) ^^^ tried to be a little more scientific.

Worth a read as it goes through the intake/exhaust/mapping cycle that many adopt to increase the power of their cars.

For a simple generic remap, don't bother IMO. If going further with say FMIC and bigger turbo, then it's likely a bigger intake will help.

The only way i can see a benifit is with a custom map not your normal generic map that the majority of us get, i think they cost around £116 from darkside etc..

I shopped about for one and got one of a page on facebook for 20 quid. Just your luck i guess.
