Fabia Greenline II - Top tips prior to ordering?

Featured Replies

I'm considering replacing my 06 plate, high mileage, Polo 1.4 TDI with a Fabia Greenline II. I'm doing a 110 mile commute to work, so 20K miles p.a. is work related, with another 5k running around locally.

According to trip computer I'm getting high 60's mpg from the Polo so I'd expect the same, if not better, from the Fabia. (I tend to sit at 60mph/2000rpm on the M'way for the sake of economy - boring I know but hey, it still works out at about £12 per day in fuel costs).

Any top tips out there from those in the know as to what I should be aware of re. the Fabia Greenline II?

e.g.

  • What issues are there, if any, with the car?
  • What extras have you got/would have got with hind-sight?
  • What is the mpg like in reality?
  • Would you purchase one again, knowing what you know now?

Thanks in advance.

  • What issues are there, if any, with the car? - Not found any issues yet and I've done 1500 miles since I got the car 3 weeks ago!

?

  • What extras have you got/would have got with hind-sight? - I got the Maxi-Dot as the readout is better than the LCD, plus you can set it to show whats playing on the MDI Audio rather than watching the MPG. But you can have Average MPG, Live MPG and Overall MPG figures!. Otherwise I've no other options!!

  • What is the mpg like in reality? - I currently do 140 miles a day on the M4 at 70 (thanks god for the cruise control!) and I'm currently returning 62mpg (see my Sig!) which is waaaay better than my old 1.4 Civic!

  • Would you purchase one again, knowing what you know now? - YES!!!! (didn't have to think about that!!!!)

The Car is fantastic!!, I have the Estate and its very comfy, Stable on the road, and the Boot is huge for the size of car!! I'd recommend the car to anyone looking at an Eco car!! Far over and above the Fiats, Toyotas, Vauxhalls etc... even over it's VAG cousins (Ibiza, Polo and A1)..

I bought mine used, at 25K miles and have driven it 8K miles. No real issues so far. The long gearing and lack of torque at at low revs takes a while to get used to, but once you learn it, it drives like a dream.

What extras have you got/would have got with hind-sight?

Checking the UK configurator, since some UK options are standard in my country, I would have added

- curtain airbags (standard here)

- protective side mouldings (standard here)

- climate control (I have it, wouldn't want to be w/o it)

- rear parking sensors (indispensable in city parking)

- maxi-dot (so you can have several bits of info up at the same time)

- sunset glass/dark rear windows

My installed extras/accessories are

- door sill covers

- rubber boot map

What is the mpg like in reality?

My overall average is 70. On a long countryside trip (no motorways) I have done 88, and on longer journeys it's usually 80-ish, motorways 75-ish. I'd say 75-80 is achievable when driving carefully.

Would you purchase one again, knowing what you know now?

Yes, no doubt. But: Since the GL is all about minimising emissions, i.e. minimising fuel consumption, i.e. minimising weight, many factory-fitted options are not available, such as alarm or rear speakers, and I would have wanted those. That said, the unbeatable low fuel consumption makes up for that.

  • What issues are there, if any, with the car?

none I am aware of other than the normal DPF sensors which seem to give the odd problem on all VAG diesels, but skoda assist  carry these on the van by all accounts

  • What extras have you got/would have got with hind-sight?

would have liked to have maxidot, I have rear parking sesnors and now would not be without them, start beeping at 4 foot, solid tone at 1 foot, good coverage of sides as well

  • What is the mpg like in reality?

mine is average 59mpg over 22,000 miles, can regularly see 70+ mpg on individual runs but due to lots of short runs it averages down over the whole tank, best MPG on a run was 89.3mpg on 190 mile run Birmingham to kent (was 83 mpg on way from kent to brum in the morning)

  • Would you purchase one again, knowing what you know now?

Yes, great car, very versatile (I have the estate) can get 1800 x 900 plasterboard in the back just up over headrests, if you drive mainly on your own on a commute great motor, if you are going to spend most of the time with full load of Passengers and boot I would possibly look at the other engine options, record for me in car is 5 x 4 man tents, 3 tables, 3 benches, cook gear, gas cylinder, food and my gear for a cub camp (floor to roof behind seats and passenger seat full to window)

Thanks for the replies. Now just need to wait a couple of months and then play a couple of dealers off against each other.

D-Day = 1st March 2014

I had a new Jan 2010 car for a year and 20k miles.

What issues are there, if any, with the car?

I had the coil light start flashing, this was sorted with an software update.

Also had the clutch slave cylinder pop at around 12k miles, fixed same day by my dealer.

Generally they seem reliable, not heard of many issues.

What extras have you got/would have got with hind-sight?

I had quite a decent spec.

It's a matter of opinion, but I found the leather pack and climatronic did lift the interior quality a bit.

Maxi dot and parking sensors obviously handy if you want the better functions.

What is the mpg like in reality?

I averaged 72mpg (real, not from the car display) over the 20k miles from new. (car display was quoting 85-88mpg)

It was a bit tight for the first 5k miles though and struggled to beat 70mpg. (60mpg for the first 2k miles)

You do have to drive it like it wants to be driven, otherwise you'll probably get around 65-68mpg.

I managed a best average over 3 tanks of 78mpg, but it was very boring.

Would you purchase one again, knowing what you know now?

I would, if I had a lot of miles to carry and wanted to do it in a new car at a low price.

In terms of cost... have you considered a used one?

Now the VAT free deal has finished they are not quite the bargain they were.

Hopefully when this, or its nearest real life cousin, shows its face...

prices for the Fabia II models will come down. Just have to make sure I don't get left in a 'Stock vehicles only' situation when ordering.

(When is the III due out?  Not that I want one, just curious).

In around a year I believe.

But if they do like they have done with the Yeti there will be three months when you can only order a stock one, prior to the new one.

Interesting I had forgotten that, but the clutch slave cyclinder broke on my last Skoda (Mk 1 Octy vRS) as well.  Maybe a weak item on Skoda cars?

Every other car I've had has been fine.

I just put it down to a fault part.

Drove the rest of the way with no clutch, phoned my local dealer and they had the car collected and fixed within 5 hours.

  • 4 weeks later...

What issues are there, if any, with the car?

I've owned mine since 24 miles, now has 16,144 in a year and a half.

It was delivered with a broken interior heating/cooling vent (replaced for free).

One of the door seals managed to work itself free - I just repositioned it. If someone hadn't noticed it, I suppose it could have developed into a water leak over time.

It's a 1.2l diesel - it is slow to pull away. Get used to it :)

What extras have you got/would have got with hind-sight?

I have:

Curtain airbags

Climate Control (I wouldn't have this with hindsight - I find it very difficult to get the temperature "right")

Sunset glass (I regularly sleep in my car - this is a necessity)

Maxi dot (looks cool - not necessary)

3rd rear headrest (although I've removed it to save fuel :p)

Floor mats (just get them)

Protective side mouldings (not used yet, but one day I'm sure I'll appreciate them!)

Parking sensors (I don't want a car without these anymore)

I wouldn't have gotten any more - I wouldn't see the value to any other extras!

What is the mpg like in reality?

These are my actual MPG figures, which I have recorded from every receipt:

http://www.fuelly.com/driver/kellja2001/fabia

My driving style varies. Often it's quite relaxed (i.e. I'm not straining for every last drip of fuel) - that said, I do take as much stuff out of my car as I can to raise the figures, including the rear headrests. I'm known to do between 56mph and 90 70mph

Would you purchase one again, knowing what you know now?

For my needs as they were two years ago, yes - 100%. I had 3 requirements: 1) Cruise control 2) Can sleep in the boot with the seats down 3) Cheap/economical to run.

For my needs now (slightly lower emphasis on 3) and a higher emphasis on "fun"), I still think she's pretty much my best bet! Haven't seen anything better!

Only had mine a few days but chuffed to bits with it. returned 66 mpg on a 100 mile run yesterday and I wasn't driving all that economically tbh.

I bought mine second hand and it has the parking sensors which are a really nice touch, If I was buying new I would have Maxidot.

DONT FORGET YOUR SPARE WHEEL!!! essential imo

Standard spec on the greenline II is pretty good tho. Especially when compared with the Greenline I (cruise, MDI, AUX in, AC, good stereo, nice alloys, Fog lights, DRLs)
