Stop start won't start!

Featured Replies

I have 2 litre tdi manual just a month old. Stop start has been great but twice this week I have stopped at traffic lights and stop start kicks in and I leave my foot on the brake. When I am ready to start i press the clutch and put it in first to find I am not moving anywhere. Then I look at the display and it says start the car manually. What a pain!

Is it something I'm doing wrong?

It only works in certain conditions. There is a list of conditions where it does not kick in if you check the manual. In this warm weather if you are using air con that could stop it working.

Thanks. I always have the climate control on but why would it stop and not start. I would expect it not to do either in that case. Pretty embarrassing when trying to pull away at the lights. People behind must have wondered what the heck I was doing.

My seems to be all over the place for the last two weeks, seems to work when it feels like it. But if it stops, it will always start again. as above I put it down to the hot weather/aircon.

Weather conditions won't stop it starting, it won't stop due to the weather.

OP, you're not getting it into gear before the clutch is down are you?

I'm sure it's just me. Will try it out over the weekend like neily said maybe I'm changing into 1st before the clutch is fully down.

Somewhere in the handbook it gives the criteria for having to start the engine manually.

Ive never had it fail to start on me, unless i undo the seatbelt. Thats the one thing that does stop it from restarting.

Opening the door is another I think.

I have DSG though and the systems operate quite differently.

Isn't putting the handbrake on another one? I think someone who had done Advanced Driving was complaining that they have been taught not to hold a car on the brakes so you don't dazzle the car behind, so put the handbrake on. Then had to start the car manually.

I think it works brilliantly with DSG, it is really easy to control with brake pedal pressure as to if it cuts in or not.

Handbrake on or off has no effect on my stop/start.

Fair enough - my memory is failing me in my old age.

Same here. I always put handbrake on when stationary and stop/start always works...  I'd say the OP's stop/start sounds faulty...

I've had a faulty Start/Stop and you know about it - error messages on Maxidot, Infotainment etc.

There is a reason why you have to start manually, I just can't be bothered looking it up on a Friday evening!

I want to rule out user error first. Will try it over the weekend. Might just be changing gear before it's powered back up fully.

Mine does the same if you go into gear without pressing the clutch first or even do them at the same time. You need to press the clutch first then go into gear during cranking.

Might not be the fault but try it. Also opening the D/S door will cause this although I doubt your doing that.

Is weird that I quite like stop / start. Infact when I sit at the lights and it hasn't stopped it seems weird :-)

Weather conditions won't stop it starting, it won't stop due to the weather.

I am sure people realise the weather won't affect it, however when its hot people use the air con more & that can have an effect.

No it doesn't. The OP is referring to stop/start, switching the engine off but not restarting it. If the a/c is on, the engine won't stop in the first place if the load is too high.

I had the "start engine manually" issue once or twice and after a software update at the dealers, it disappeared.

Nope, weather/Aircon use has no effect on the stop/start STARTING the engine again.

Although mine is a DSG I have had the same as the OP, so looks like it needs the same software update that bichti mentions. Going in soon for service so will mention this to them.

Something different today. Hubby drive and we stopped at lights and stop start kicked in fine. Anyhow we were waiting for about a minute and suddenly the engine started again all by itself and the crossed out A appeared on the dash. We weren't touching anything.

No doubt I will get shot down in flames by some on here, but mine has done that also & as I was stopped the air con boost started & along with the other electrics running the system senses more electrical usage & starts the engine. I think that is normal but I am sure we will be told if that is not the case.

No, that's perfectly normal.  The car will try and keep the cabin to within a certain range (2-3 degrees, I think) of the temperature set on the climate control, and so will start the engine if it needs to in order to be able to cool the cabin back down (as it warms up when you're stopped because the air con isn't running then).  If you haven't got climate control, I guess it does it based on some other threshold.

Yep. Have climate on all the time. Glad it's normal.

You can see on the infotainment the reasons why start stop is unavailable.
