  1. Bet there's only a bit more shoulder room to show in the 7.
  2. You get it then and i'm delighted that there are people out there like you. Golf will soon turn 26 and there is nothing else I have driven that makes me smile as much as it does. Took it apart, rebuilt it and it took us without incident halfway across Europe and back What i've spent on it has been my design and my will. I don't expect to recoup that from some other by calling it 'rare' or 'one of only 200 made'.
  3. Its a real killer on the VAG scene. The buckets that have had a bit of cash thrown at them up for sale at way over their worth is frightening. I remember seeing a Mk2 with an R36 engine in it, a master-piece of engineering on Ebay for £10k. The chap had spent many times this amount in its creation but was fully aware that money spent doesn't equal a motor worth £40k, snapped up in hours. Alas there are far too many out there who think a bit of slap raises the value of a car to the ionosphere. The eldest's boyfriend has dropped a 1.4 16v into mk2 Polo and it hasn't run right since. Asking £2k for it and wonders why he can't shift it.
  4. Alfa 155s. I'd love to have had one of those.
  5. ' What's the most obscure think you've had in your boot? Most obscure thought i've had in the boot was in relation to the much publicised multiverse theory and this very morning.
  6. Bloody hell when that crossing is rough you spend your time in bed sliding up and down the bunk! Having just completed a 700 mile non-stop (barring food and fuel) trip to Wolfsburg I can sympathise with Lee's now stark choice of driving options. I have never felt so drained as completing the drive in one hit broken by the ferry and eating. Shared between two of us but I cannot sleep in a moving car so effectively spent twelve hours on the move. Antwerp is a fecking pain to get through as well
  7. My wife's now enfeebled arguing against my purchase of a Beetle. I'm about 48 hours from her capitulation
  8. Now there's something to a get a little bit of wee out come trade-in time. When he eventually retires from problem solving he'll be the envy of all the coffin dodgers parked up on Marine Drive in Clacton
  9. He's getting on bless him. Those Acuras can be a little harsh on the old bones these days and oh, isn't that a murray mint compartment?
  10. There being so little traffic on the M6 this afternoon that I got to work quite early. Plenty of time to take advantage of a trip through the city centre's tunnels where I could listen to the Mk2 wail a little
  11. Welcome along matey. I too have a Toledo, excellent motor!
  12. I can understand the premise of them being cheaper because they're assembled from tech that has long since been developed and profited from. The tooling, R+D and reliability were already done before the cars were ever conceived (barring some cosmetic differences). I'm not sure what platform the Duster 4x4 is on but if its on the Scenic off-roader base then I should imagine most will be scrap in less than six years.
  13. We'll find out in about 18 months time whether the brand is a flier or not- my 407 was a perfect car for the first twelve months or so...
  14. Speaking only from the view-point of someone who owned one, he was incredibly frustrated with the amount of reparation it required on a seemingly regular basis. I guess there may be exceptions to rules and all that. Speaking in defence of the Mk5 Golf GTi it was far better than I ever imagined it would be. If you're not interest in VAG then it leaves the choices of an Astra Sporthatch VXR or a Focus ST, I know the latter has quite a following. Mazda3 MPS, still some nice Evo 6/7s about and modern GSRs are brisk if not lightning fast. BMW M3s are plentiful, M5s findable and there is of course the Subaru angle. You do seem pretty set on an R26 so maybe that's the itch that needs to be scratched? If its occasional use then it shouldn't matter too much about the reliability on a daily basis.
  15. So what's their excuse for the pre May 2014 ones? Surely they aren't supposed to be like that?
  16. Electrical gremlins and failed sensors will take you to your grave. More steering feel on a milk float. Its like Tottenham, everything looks like it should be fantastic but the end product is woeful. as matey suggests above a cupra R is a good shout, mk5 golf gti also worth it
  17. Exactly this. Saw the same thing a few days ago in the city and it looked pretty special in a base and stripped back way. I don't find Dacia offensive but the tech they're based on cannot be up to much. Its using a Renault parts bin from a time when Renaults weren't the most reliable. I know they've upped their game recently but have they put the modern stuff into Dacias? Not brave enough to find out. Good luck to those who are though, plenty of custom to hoover up that Skoda have alienated.
  18. Was in Wolfsburg a couple of weeks ago, had never been to Germany before but was surprised what a clean and friendly country we'd ended up in. Enjoy your time there!
  19. I'm on the hunt for like/ similar material for the golf
  20. Plenty of 14 year olds who can tell you different...
