  1. Went out for a drive with my wife today. We landed up in St. Ives (Cambs) & had a mid morning bite to eat in an eatery on the river next to the old stone bridge. I had a mini (diameter) Cumberland Sausage between two lightly toasted slices of Sourdough bread & some ketchup. Very tasty. My wife had 2 x eggs on toast with some greenery. Tonight for me was leftover Bolognaise with Macaroni instead of Spaghetti for a change. Why is it that leftover bolognaise, Chinese or a Curry always seems to taste better a day or two after? Not so much pizza though.
  2. Oh yes. Like many of my era I was on the receiving end of some teacher "correction" on a few occasions. Get caught chewing gum & the gum was pushed into you hair needing scissors to cut it out. Get caught misbehaving in PE & you got a slipper with a golf ball in the end of it across your backside. One blue bruise from the slipper & a black one from the golf ball. Come back clean from a cross country run & you got rolled in field cow pats. Misbehave on a cross country run outside of the school & you got 6 of the best - because it got the school a bad name! Back chat in an RI lesson & you got a ruler across the knuckles - from the female teacher. Get caught smoking & your fags were confiscated (for the teachers to smoke in their staff room) & you got detention for 2 weeks. Ears & noses were regularly pulled as well. This was only for the boys. The girls got a much easier ride. Not once did we think of trying to hit our teachers. The only way of exacting some revenge was on the Rugby pitch during the annual teachers vs 1st 15 pupil Rugby match. 😉🏉 All of this was in a newly created 3,000 pupil Comprehensive School in North London in 1967-72 which was created from merged Secondary Modern & Grammar schools. The Secondary modern teachers were more "hip" with leather elbow patch jackets & track suits. PE teachers in particular (I'm looking at you Mr. Barber) had a more nasty streak. The ex Grammar School teachers wore capes & mortar boards, were far more strict & didn't take any back chat from anyone. The good old days eh!!
  3. Yes they were the small glasses with a fairly deep foam head that went down in 2 or 3 glugs. I lost count how many each of us had but I probably had at least 5 or 6 more than my colleague (lightweight) who was much slower getting them down. We had the waiter on constant top up runs back & forth to the bar with his tray. We had a good knuckle of pork & potatoes if I recall as well.
  4. Seeing those beer bottle bungs reminded me of one of the last times I was in Dusseldorf on a business trip. A work colleague & I sampled the local Schumacker tavern for a spot of diner & a "few" beers . Below was our beer tally / bill for the night. Surprisingly no hangover in the morning either!! They were small glasses though!
  5. Yep. I washed our two the other day for the first time this year. Not such an intensive process as yours, just a BH Touchless foam covering, jet rinse, then a wash with Autobrite Graphite infused shampoo (new to me), rinse & BH wheel cleaner. No drying necessary because I now have a pure water filter which works a treat & saves the arm ache of drying the cars by hand. I also find that a leaf blower also gets rid of the majority of water quite easily. Especially handy for my wife's taller Kona roof. Typing this reminds me I have to touch in & polish some scratches on my roof as well. However, even with the labour saving devices, I was still aching & stiff for a day after. Getting older sucks.
  6. My son was a drummer. Needless to say we had to leave the house when he & his mates had a band practices round ours. Now he's got his own house & our 1st grandson, I was hatching a plan to see how I can get his drum kit out of our loft & into his & get our grandson interested in it. He he he. "What goes around comes around" 🥁🥁🥁
  7. Update on my "Old Mother Hubbard" tale from last night. Well, as it turned out the cupboard (AKA the Fridge) was not bare after all. Lurking at the back hidden by my wife's overflowing bags of veg & herbs (which seem to take up at least 75% of the fridge) was the remains of the Lamb Chop stew I made a few nights ago. Result. It still had some spuds in it as well so straight on the hob for a slow re-heat with some buttered bread to mop up the last of the juices. Just the job. However, The fridge definitely is bare now so I'll be getting some frozen mince out of the freezer for tomorrow & tonight will be a cheeky Kebab takeaway I think.
  8. Toasted cheese & onion sarnie's at 4.30pm. Feeling hungry now but nothing in the fridge🤔
  9. Nice figures. I do miss the days of 68-70mpg fuel consumption in my old 2.0CR170 Superb Elegance estate. I'm lucky now if I get 36-38mpg on a run & 26mpg around town. That said, I don't do high mileages any more so the mpg numbers aren't really an issue for me these days. I've only filled once this year since Christmas because we tend to use my wife's EV for most of the local trips. Mine only get used when we go a a trip longer than the EV can manage or, I do a dump run or, I need to remind myself how quick the 280 is 🤫
  10. It seems there were two episodes featuring DAF's with CVT & the above link was not the one I was thinking of. This one is. https://www.google.com/search?q=Mathewsons+Daf+episode&sca_esv=7205f6bcc2c46b97&rlz=1C1CHBF_en-GBGB903GB928&biw=1280&bih=632&tbm=vid&ei=O0P9ZdPCCYewhbIPkfCrgAk&ved=0ahUKEwiTzPXYu4eFAxUHWEEAHRH4CpAQ4dUDCA0&uact=5&oq=Mathewsons+Daf+episode&gs_lp=Eg1nd3Mtd2l6LXZpZGVvIhZNYXRoZXdzb25zIERhZiBlcGlzb2RlMgoQIRgKGKABGMMEMgQQIRgVSIYhUOIEWNYKcAB4AJABAJgBmwGgAYkEqgEDMy4yuAEDyAEA-AEBmAIFoAKaBMICCBAAGIkFGKIEwgIIEAAYgAQYogSYAwCIBgGSBwMzLjKgB-oM&sclient=gws-wiz-video#vhid=D06GNAwtQ_7HqM&vssid=videos-0dc328be
  11. There was an episode of Bangers & Cash (a UK TV series about the Mathewson's classic car auction company in Yorkshire) where they had a DAF 66 with CVT up for sale. The narrator / presenter of the programme asked Derek, Dave & Paul Matthewson how the DAF 66 CVT worked & none of them could explain it properly so that the narrator was none the wiser. https://www.google.com/search?q=Mathewsons+Daf+66+episode&rlz=1C1CHBF_en-GBGB903GB928&oq=Mathewsons+Daf+66+episode&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIHCAEQIRigATIHCAIQIRigAdIBCjE4NzQwajBqMTWoAgCwAgA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#vhid=3fDy2X4ZGHNIQM&vssid=videos-dfd183b3
  12. My one & only experience with a CVT was in a DAF 66 Variomatic back in the late '70's. Horrible experience. I much prefer a torque converter or DSG. No issues with my Superb DSG. However, I did have a few issues with our ex-Karoq 1.5 DSG 4 x 4. Monumental hesitation between pressing the pedal & any forward motion. I fitted a Race Chip Throttle pedal which improved the response but there was still a bit of hesitation which I think was caused by the fix that VAG applied to cure the kangarooing problem they had with early 1.5 engines. No such problems with our Kona EV - only 1 speed. Press (gently or you will spin the front tyres) & go.
  13. I've been having some extra solar panels & an additional battery installed in our house over this last last week. The scaffolding is up until the end of this week & today was the day for the Pigeon protection guy to do his stuff on the newly fitted solar panels &, the electricians were here to fit the extra battery, wire up the extra roof panels & re-commission the system. The existing inverter already has 2 strings of 5 panels each connected to it so these needed to be re-wired into a single string of 10 which would allow the new 5 panels to be added to the 2nd string connection - if you get my drift. The Pigeon guy did his job OK & the battery got fitted & re-commissioned but, the extra roof panels didn't get wired up because the electricians weren't told about that part of the job. They thought they were just fitting a battery Various calls were made but nothing was resolved as the electricians had another job to go to. So, after firing off an "angry from Mayfair" type e-mail I'm now waiting for my solar provider to advise when I can expect the panels to get wired in. Not happy. To add insult to injury the final invoice has just arrived but they can go Whistle Dixie 🖕because that ain't getting paid until all the work is done.
  14. Humm. Dare I say not the most appetising plate. Get yourself back to Blighty for some proper grub!!
  15. 8 Lamb cutlet hot pot tonight avec spuds, onions, courgette, carrots, celery, Worcestershire sauce, lamb stock cubes & loads on black pepper. No pics. Maybe tomorrow as there's loads left over. Thinking about it, no pics tomorrow either as we are out for a curry so perhaps Friday.
  16. After opening my bottles seem have an evaporation problem. At least that's what I tell my wife 🍾
  17. You'll love it & try as you might you will not get any wheelspin. With 360bhp I can't spin my wheels in damp weather. CVT auto's are just weird!
  18. I've just ordered some touch up paint for two scratches on my roof! Been meaning to do this ever since I got the car but due to the location I keep forgetting about them. Presumably previous owner was careless removing stuff from the roof rack / bars. Touch up & machine cut & polish should do the job good enough to pass muster. I've also got a couple of stone chips that need touch in as well. Waiting for warmer weather before I tackle them.
  19. Steak, chips, toms & mushrooms for me tonight as well. Extra thick extra large Rump steak from Lidl cut in half for tonight's meal. Not the best steak I've ever had & quite a bit of gristle. I guess you get what you pay for.
  20. This is my problem. When there's only one meat eater in the house the same or similar thing for 4 days running gets quite boring. It's challenging to come up with different ways to cook the same base food. I've still got 3 slices of pizza to finish from Thursday!!
  21. Ha Ha. No, on both counts. I went to Costco the other week. As those who know & will attest, Costco only sell meat in catering pack quantities so it's not possible to buy a single steak, chop or leg of chicken. They only come in trays of 6 or more & in the case of thick cut Pork chops - a tray of 12 &, I've got one more left. I did consider getting some T Bone steaks but a 4 pack of those was over £55 which was too much for me.12 Pork chops was less than half of that. Tonight will be a Domino's Pizza (delivered) because neither my wife & I can be bothered to cook tonight. No photo's cos I'm sure you all know what a large Mighty Meaty looks like & a Vegy whatever for my wife. Leftovers for lunch tomorrow.
  22. Dry dinner lovers look away now. 👀 Tonight was meat (Pork Chop) & potatoes (cheesy Parmigiano mash) with a lot of Onion gravy 😋 Didn't need the apple sauce in the end.
