  1. I currently own 2 mk2's (105bhp) and a mk1(110bhp), all Elegance spec. While the mk1 is a pretty good car the mk2 is leagues ahead in handling, grip, comfort and just everyday ease of use. I enjoy driving the mk1 from time to time but love getting back into my mk2! I find the seats in the mk2 much much more comfortable but maybe it depends on your own size/build (I'm 5'8" small build).
  2. Cheers Chris, I was hoping it'd be something simple. Can't understand why handbook recommends taking car to main dealer yet has a section on changing a headlight bulb!
  3. Hi, does anyone know how I get at the bulbs in the interior lights? I don't want to start pulling randomly at light fitting and hand book suggests main dealer does it which is a bit of a joke! Cheers Andrew
  4. There is an Octavia 1.9Tdi taxi in Dublin with almost 500,000miles on it, still on its original engine and gearbox and still running sweetly. This mileage was verified recently by the main Skoda dealer in Dublin who ran a competition to find the highest mileage Skoda.
  5. Cheers chaps, Car running fine today and after a chat with my friendly local Skoda service manager it would appear that there are indeed separate issues, one possibility raised is a knackered vacuum hose which led to car going into limp home. Back to full power now so I'm a happy clam, probably will have to get my hands dirty and sort out the wee problems but all fine for the mo.
  6. Cheers for the replies, plugged her in and got 4 fault codes, 17965 Boost control? 18039 Throttle pedal reading 18062 ???? 18080 Coolant fan control All these faults together would seem to point to an electric/electronic problem rather than mechanical or am I barking up the wrong tree?
  7. I normally drive a MKII Tdi but 2 weeks ago bought myself a Combi Mk I TDi and have enjoyed driving her. She's a bit leggy (180k) but still pulls like a train, however, accelerating onto the motorway today she just lost most of her ponies and felt like an SDi, curiously, the temp gauge dropped from the usual halfway point down to the first quarter mark (70 deg ??) as well. She'll plod along at low revs but really struggles to rev past 2-2500. Has anybody any clue what this could be? I was thinking MAF but why would that affect the temp gauge?
  8. Hi all, wifey's Fabia's battery died last week and now the car radio is in "safe" mode (ie: not working!)and looking for a code. Battery was not disconnected from the vehicle and according to the handbook the radio should communicate with the car and continue working in this case. Rang Pilsen autos and the response I got was "sure, bring it down and we'll recode it for you, it'll cost you €40" This is leaving a bad taste in my mouth as it just smacks of a ripoff. Anybody any suggestions?
  9. This is one of the very few things I hate with my car! What a stupid place to put a rocker switch, on a horizontal surface beside a cupholder. The switch gets gummed up very easily, which leads to excessive force being used to operate it which in turn leads to the switch dismounting. As already said, remove passenger side carpeted panel and slip a flat blade screwdriver in to pop switch back in to place. However, if the switch is gummed up, you'll just end up pushing it back in next time you have to use it. Whoever in Skoda designed that switch and placed it there should be taken around the back of the factory and given a swift kick in the nuts.
  10. Driving on the motorway yesterday and put my foot down to accelerate from 90kph to 120kph and car was quite sluggish and stuttery, since then even on a light throttle cruise the car feels hesitant. I thought the gearshifts were getting a bit jerky recently but just put it down to the age and mileage (5yrs old, 225k) and the car recently had a crankshaft sensor replaced (by Skoda). Has anybody experienced anything similar in the 1.9? I'm running "worst case" scenarios in my head at the moment, like injector pump, injectors etc. Obviously as it's the Easter W/E I can't get anything done with the car until next week!
  11. Now that Skoda have changed the spec of their oils, which oil do I now use in a 1.6 petrol Octavia?? (mkII) Cheers.
  12. My car is a Elegance spec Combi with factory fit leather, auto, heated seats, cruise, mf steering wheel etc, when I ordered the car it came to a not inconsiderable €33,000 (27,000 + €6000 on extras) when I could have got into a basic spec (taxi spec) for around €21k. It's not always about the customer, we spend a lot of time behind the wheel so you may as well have it specced the way you want it. Customers do compliment me on the car and regularly comment on the hi spec.
  13. As they'd say on MythBusters, "Do NOT try this at home kids!)
  14. As far as I know, the manual 'box is sealed for life and does not need any oil changes unlike the DSG which requires an oil and filter every 60k km (40k miles).
  15. From a fellow cabbie I say wear it well! is she a six speeder? the black trim on centre console looks so much better than the tacky fake aluminium finish.
  16. I've 225k on mine and still sweet! I do get the oil and filter done though.
  17. Excellent! what you need to do now is spray the inside black to hide the single outlet.
  18. In Euroland I have to get mine done every 60,000km which translates as 37,500 miles (approx)so 40k sounds about right. Does not seem to make any difference to the life expectancy though, I know one poor lass who was religious about getting her DSG oil & filter done and 'box still packed up at 260k, know another guy who has over 300k on his with NO oil or filter changes!
  19. I can't remember who said it but it was very true at the time in relation to the Mk1 TT and Mk1 Octavia, "TT is a Golf in a frock, Octavia is a golf in overalls"
  20. That new Octy is a beauty! I was going to trade to a Superb Combi next year, not so sure now :p The Skoda City looks like a Suzuki Splash with a Fabia front, don't like it one bit, too generic small Jap box.
  21. Yep, I was in Pilsen this morning, Ken is now there so good to see an experienced head in among the new faces. They have some nice nearly new Superb Combi's for sale too! Missus had to drag me out in a headlock before I started to chat to the sales guys
  22. Thumb up for that! losing Phoenix was like losing an old friend.
  23. They all start of quiet for the first few thousand miles/kms but do get louder as they wear, I used to always replace with original brand which was Bridgestones but switched to Michelin Premacys last time which seem a bit quieter (205/55X16)
  24. Cheers Andy, it'll be a main dealer tomorrow either way. Open wallet surgery on the way me thinks.
