  1. Yeah, I initially thought that, but I figured it was best to check. Now I want to change the settings on my car so it measures fluid temps from 0 deg C.
  2. Thanks Roottoot! I had a search for rings, but that's exactly the thread I was looking for.
  3. Interesting! What are the 0-1400 numbers on the X-axis?
  4. I've had this car from a few months and cleaned it inside and out. I just went to check the wiper blade size, and as it's dark I needed a torch. When I shone it at the windscreen, I saw this. Now, these marks are on the inside of the windscreen. They are a pattern in the condensation on the inside of the car. (I haven't driven the car for a week or so, and so I guess it's got a bit damp in there. I've already put a dehumidifier in the boot, and I've just added one on the transmission tunnel too.) I haven't used a screen-mounted satnav in the car, though I used a sucker mount when I drove it home from original purchase, but certainly nothing directly in my field of view. Besides, I cleaned the inside of the screen last week pretty well with a combination of 70% isopropyl alcohol and elbow grease. My first thought was that the car has had its windscreen replaced, but as I said, these marks are on the inside of the screen, so that didn't seem to fit. Anyone else noticed these on their car? Are they caused during the manufacture of the car? They rub off easy enough, and I haven't noticed them before today or in normal driving. Only when I shone the torch on the windscreen. I'm quite perplexed, TBH.

I think it's the DQ381 in the 190TSI. I did not know that, so thanks for the tip.
  6. Hi @weyland Just by chance, have you a clear image of the rear of the camera you fitted? I ordered one from the link you provided, however the camera I received is not quite the same as the camera in their description. I think it's just a slight product modification, but I'm wondering if your camera is the same as mine, or subtly different. Here's what I mean. The three cameras possible to be ordered are A/B/C taken from the AliExpress link. (I've ignored camera C as it's clearly completely different.) And here's what they sent. The profile and dimensions of the camera (the important stuff) match Camera A. However the back wiring image seems to match Camera B. It's not an issue, but it did cause a minor "Awwww Hell!" moment when I first looked at the camera. :D I'm wondering if there are a few different suppliers of this camera, and they just send what they have, so long as it works and fits. From the other side, my camera appears to be the same as yours, so I guess it's just a slight difference between their product image and what they actually send. Thanks. :)

What smart charger do you have, Ken? I take my car for a run every week or so, but I could probably do with a charger just in case.
  8. Just watched this, and I have to say I can see what you mean about him being patronising. Even just a quick search online returns tutorials on how to fix worn handbrake ratchets, which he claims never wear. This video bothered me, and I'm still going to press the handbrake button when I lift the handbrake. (Mind you, I did wear through the chrome effect on my old car to reveal a nasty white plastic underneath.) Grumble aside, he was right about the oil.
  9. Yeah, this is something I'm keeping my eye on.
  10. No. But issues with DPFs are well documented. A simple online search of "DPF problem" will reveal that quite a few owners have experienced issues. I was a little unhappy when I learned my petrol had a GPF, but supposedly they're less trouble than DPFs, though I am suspicious of that claim as they are too new to really have much data available. Post Script: This was my original statement. "Personally I was more concerned about reliability than cost/mile, and I figured a modern TSI would be more reliable for lots of short journeys than a modern TDI. That may turn out to be a mistake, time will tell." I'm not asserting anything as to the reliability of any particular engine. I'm simply saying I considered (rightly or wrongly) the TDI to be a riskier buy than the TSI, and purchased accordingly.
  11. Excellent! Glad I could help.
  12. There's a load of factors that go into a new car decision, so it's hard to say if your choice is a mistake or not. But if you swapped car primarily to save money, and your new TSI is going to cost more to run than the equivalent TDI, then arguably it's a mistake, if saving money was your primary motivation for changing car. Personally I was more concerned about reliability than cost/mile, and I figured a modern TSI would be more reliable for lots of short journeys than a modern TDI. That may turn out to be a mistake, time will tell.
  13. Is the MP3 track data populated? By that I mean this information, not just the filename. You can see on your PC if you right-click on an MP3 and select properties - Details This may be a factor.
  14. Just to add a little more value to the thread, I found this link which explains the different types of viscosity as well as defining viscosity nicely. https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/dynamic-absolute-kinematic-viscosity-d_412.html
  15. You didn't come across as aggressive to me.
  16. Well that ties in with my original gut feeling, so it's nice to have a guesstimate vindicated by an expert. What I hadn't considered was that the increased engine tolerances when the engine is cold benefit from a thicker oil, that makes a lot of sense. (I seem remember an old "fix" for worn engines was to use a slightly thicker oil.) The giant book of things I don't know gets a few lines shorter today.
  17. Yes, but not as well as when warm. Yes. I was trying to learn what "normal" is in the original post. Anything over 50deg C should be fine, looking at the graphs Weasley linked to.
  18. Bingo! That's just the job. Thanks @weasley
  19. Yes, I realise there is a load of different grades of oil, and presumably a whole load of different graphs. But I'd expect the typical graph to look a bit like this. (Highly technical, took me hours to come up. ) I just need a reliable source of the numbers. (I also realise I may be well off the mark with my graph.)
  20. I've worked with engineers for nearly 40 years now, and we can be quite odd. He doesn't seem at all unusual to me.
  21. Thanks for your posts, folks. I had a Google to see what temperature the oil changed viscosity, assuming it gets thinner as it heats up, but I couldn't find anything specific on it. My own gut feeling is that 60 deg C would be the minimum oil temp before really booting the throttle, but I'm surprised at just how long it took for the engine oil to warm up, in my car compared to the water temp. It'll be interesting to see just how long the oil takes to get up to 50 deg C in winter, after a frost. I was just curious to know the relationship between temp and viscosity, beyond what I know, which is simply "warm oil flows better than cold oil". Doubtless someone somewhere has a few graphs plotting viscosity/temperature. Oil temp something I never gave a moment's thought, assuming the water temperature gauge was all I had to pay attention to.
  22. I watched this video and the first point on operating temperature piqued my interest on oil temperature. So I monitored my car on warm-up, and sure enough after about 5-6 min, my car water temperature was in the middle of normal, however my oil temp was still reading "--", and only after a few more minutes did the oil temp hit 50 deg C and start registering. On the motorway in summer, I recall it being around 95 deg C, but pootling around town today at 13 deg outside temp, oil temp was around 80 deg C. Does anyone know what the minimum oil temperature is for an engine to be regarded as fully warmed-up?
  23. Do you think it's the auto box that's slowed you down? Not literally, I mean psychologically. I find I drive a lot slower in my automatic than I did my previous manual. I can't decide if it's down to not feeling the need to accelerate up through the gears to my "normal" gear I drive around in, or it's me not wanting to spoil that nice green economy bar scrolling across the display. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your new car.
  24. Interesting that the 2.0 TSI 140kW was noisy in the Ateca. I think I have the same engine (DKZA) and mine is quiet from cold. Maybe it was just that particular example?
  25. That's more like it!
