Front passenger air bag
While I do not have a problem with the bag being disabled I would like to understand how to use this feature. My manual contains the same text as shown above. I have looked at the car and I cannot see where the key switch is. Can someone post a photo that would help me?

KESSY functionality on mk4 Octavia
Well, batteries being cheap, perhaps I will start replacing them annually, like we do with the house smoke alarms.

KESSY functionality on mk4 Octavia
Can a battery really go flat in one day without warning? Our Golf Alltrack has the same system and over 6 years its batteries have gone low a couple of times - most recently only this week. The car displayed a warning that the battery was low. I replaced it with a new 2032 within a couple of days. I have never had a case where the key refused to work.

KESSY functionality on mk4 Octavia
My car came with 3 keys. 2 of them sit in a drawer unused and presumably their batteries will last longer. Can't you just use one of your spare keys when your battery runs out?

No cool air - faulty flap?
This just started happening to me in my Mk4 VRS Wagon in the last few days. These are the first few hot days in the 6 months since I bought the car: Autumn, Winter, Spring were cool but now it is 36 degrees in mid-summer. It's only 6 months into the 5 year warranty so it should not cost me anything but I have to wait for three weeks over Christmas and New Year until I can get an appointment. Some things I noticed: a) Adjusting settings of Auto, Sync, Fan speed, vent flaps etc made no difference. b) Turning the aircon off caused the flap to open up so I got full volume air - except it was not air-conditioned so it quickly became warm. c) Turning the aircon back on caused the flap to close but there was also a very loud sharp click after a seconds from near the glove box. I have heard other Mk 4 owners describe a similar noise associated with a fault in their SOS systems. I wonder what type of device does that? A relay - but it seems too loud for that? I suppose it does not help that I have run the aircon in Auto mode 100% of the time through winter and spring. I would not do that in other cars but this one buries the setting 2 or 3 levels deep in a touchscreen so it is easier to leave it on Auto 21 degrees year-in, year-out. That calibration video above sounded like good stuff but it does not seem to be applicable to the Mk4. Now the car is all touchscreen and it does not seem to register two simultaneous presses of those two buttons to get into the calibration mode. I found two other threads that describe a very similar problem with Superbs, except there it is possibly associated with icing up after a longer running period:

ACC Braking when overtaking
I have had that a few times too. The ACC was in control, yet it did not slow down fast enough to satisfy the requirements of the AEB stuff. And other times I felt that it was approaching too fast and I got on the brakes defensively since I didn't trust it to stop. Nor did I want any vehicle behind me to be unable to stop in time. It does not always drive like a good driver would, seeing the traffic in front stopping for the lights and getting off the accelerator and gradually breaking to a halt.

ACC Braking when overtaking
Perhaps you can get together with other Octavia users whose cars do not exhibit this fault and demonstrate those to the dealer and say you want a car that behaves like theirs? Maybe even a demonstrator at their own dealership could be shown to behave normally?

ACC Braking when overtaking
Maybe in the UK but not here in Australia. My vRS does not do that 99% of the time. Only occasionally it will brake unnecessarily. It is just one of its many quirks. I have got used to giving it a prod on the accelerator in such situations.

Idle speed 2.0 VRS
Mine idles at 1000 too. Not sure which modes but certainly in Comfort mode. Could just be the way the electronic rev counter works. Might be incapable of showing a value below 1000? I noticed it but never thought of it as a problem.

Is Canton really that bad?
This talk about the Canton made me listen to mine more critically this week. I realized that what I notice the most, and appreciate, is the speaker in the centre of the dashboard, bouncing up against the windscreen. That is what provides the most clarity to me, just as a central speaker does in a typical TV sound setup. I went back to the articles and brochures and came up with these: Review of the standard 8-speaker setup which also mentions the Canton: https://totallyev.net/skoda-octavia-iv-estate-audio-review-canton-system/ German brochure for Canton that seems to only offer 10 speakers: https://www.canton.de/en/skoda-en The Australian brochure and others describe it as having 12 speakers: (attached)

Making mobile phone calls - avoiding touch screen
Thank you MCG1975.☺️ That is what I needed to know. I never suspected that the Android Auto entry was actually referring to the phone capability. That is my main problem solved. Its a pity that the manual, with all its verbosity, does not cover such things. I still find it strange that VAG group - in the Octavia and my 6 year old Golf - only expedite calling recent numbers and not favourite contacts. Same with the radio. I have set up 10 radio stations as favourites. I am not interested in any others. But if one of them is playing and I press right-arrow button on the wheel I get taken to the adjacent station in frequency, i.e. totally lost. My 19 year-old Honda could take me to the next of its 10 favourites with one button press. And since I had memorized the order that meant I could navigate to any of them easily without taking my eyes off the road.

Making mobile phone calls - avoiding touch screen
Maybe I should give up on Android Auto. The car has most of the same functions itself - music, satnav, phone calls. The only reason I have been using Android Auto is that Google Maps is so much better at recognizing addresses, especially when spoken, and recognising vaguer instructions such as "Navigate to nearest MacDonalds."
-
Making mobile phone calls - avoiding touch screen
How, precisely do you do that? Or is it only available if you are not using Android Auto?
-
Making mobile phone calls - avoiding touch screen
So perhaps in my car the time I saw it was when I was not running Android Auto. Today I have Android Auto on so the phone integration is not available. That seems pretty poor. Does it work that way on other makes? No access to steering wheel phone controls when running Apple Carplay or Android Auto - which is most of the time for most people.

Making mobile phone calls - avoiding touch screen
I can make calls using the touch screen but to do that I have to take my eyes off the road and press Menu, then Phone and then press the button of one of my favourite contacts. I can do it with voice control by pressing the voice control button on the steering wheel, waiting for it to start up, saying "Call contact" and then after the prompt saying the name of my contact and (if it recognises it) confirming with Yes. But is it possible to make calls using only the buttons on the wheel? It is possible in our 7.5 series Golf: use the dedicated Phone button on right of steering wheel to get to Phone menu, use vertical arrows to scroll through list of last calls, use OK button to make the call. I thought I saw something like this on the Octavia once but I cannot find it any more. The contents of the left or right areas in the virtual cockpit can be cycled through many possibilities - media, fuel consumption, etc - but not Phone. Ideally not only would Phone be one of those possibilities but I would also be able to access my favourite, or even all, contacts in the Phone menu in the virtual cockpit. And what about when a call comes in. Can I either answer it or reject it from the wheel? And if a call is in progress can I terminate it from the wheel?

Is Canton really that bad?
My car came with a $6500 Premium Package that included many features including DCC, Heads-up Display and Drive Mode Selection I cared for and "Premium German Canton sound system (12 loudspeakers, digital equalizer)" and others which I was indifferent to. I had never even heard of Canton. And my 70 year-old ears have seen better days so I am not that picky about sound - so long as there is enough treble to compensate for my loss of high frequency response. Anyway I am quite happy with the Canton sound system although I never use the equalizer, cannot detect the sub-woofer and never turn the volume up past 50%. And the sound sources I use are either DAB or Youtube Music so probably not the highest of fi! I don't think I would have ticked a box to pay $AUS 1500 or whatever is the equivalent of what you guys paid just to get the slight sound improvement over our 6-speaker VW Golf Alltrack. Just as I would be very disappointed to have paid specifically for the crap voice control, or the almost crap SatNav, or the Park Assist and Lane Assist that I dare not use, or the automatic Matrix LED lights that people still flash me for, or the ability to customize the ambient lighting. Nor would I pay for the 19 inch low-profile wheels that it comes with. Would be happier with 18 or even 17 and any of the available wheel designs. Less road noise and cheaper to replace. On the other hand I would trade all of those for a return to buttons and knobs and straight-forward menus and instant starts and reliable operation and no need to reboot the system to restore functionality. At least it is so nice to actually drive.

What colour is your vRS?
Moon White here. I quite liked the Race Blue which was actually in stock but my wife vetoed it. Moon White was available with only a few weeks wait. Now that I have it I quite like it and it is probably a safer choice when the time comes to sell it. Some bright colours can be harder to sell.

Why is my car beeping at me all the time?
There is a very small beep that you could hear but you would have had to set it up first so I suppose it is not that. It is the over-speed warning. I have it set to 5km/h s above the limit. It gets the limit from the SatNav. I get another noise that is more of a BONG BONG BONG!. That one occurs if the car believes I have strayed from my lane for too long - about 10-20 seconds. That can happen when its idea of the lane marking is wrong.

Software
These glitches, which I also have, are far too common. Almost daily for me. I would consider once a month more acceptable.

Strange Satnav fault
My software is on 1803 which is fairly up-to-date and my Infotainment control unit has been replaced. We do not have online features, such as SOS, here but I often get a popping noise from the dashboard in the first minute after starting.

Strange Satnav fault
I am used to there being a range of intermittent issues with this car's software that clear themselves with a restart or a reboot etc, but today I had a new one and I wonder if anyone else has experienced it. Although I mostly use Android Auto's satnav due to its superior recognition of addresses, both typed and spoken, today I used the built-in Skoda SatNav. At the same time I was playing music from my Android Phone, which plays seamlessly via the built-in Media function on via Android Auto. Anyway the SatNav functioned ok EXCEPT that there was no map on the centre console. The map DID display in the main screen behind the steering wheel. The rest of the SatNav functioned perfectly: the voice announcements, the HUD display, the various UI elements, including the search screen, north arrow, speed limit, This did not clear for the rest of the one hour journey. I tried rebooting the Infotainment system but that did not fix it. On the next trip, several hours later the same situation applied - everything worked ok except no map in the centre console. Yet on the next trip, ten minutes later, it started working again.

New Ap in Shop
It has happened to me too. I do not trust it any more. And even if it does brake it leaves it to the last second - not gradual like I would do myself. So I anticipate it and get on the brakes earlier and more gradually. Of course that disables the ACC so it won't start off automatically when the lights change, but that is good too since it accelerates very slowly, irritating the people behind me. I reenable it later after I am almost up to speed. In spite all of that I DO like the ACC for tootling along the freeway when the traffic ahead is bunching up and driving below the speed limit. It makes me a better driver, tolerating going slower instead of following my instinct to get out in the passing lane and overtake the slowcoaches.

VRS PETROL MPG Competition
Petrol VRS wagon here. Just got back from a day's drive, 80% on freeways. Using adaptive cruise control as much as possible. Max speed limit was 110km/h but was often reduced to 80-100 due to presence of other traffic. Over several hundred kms the average was 5.2l/100km which translates to 54 British MPG. I am very pleased with that. It would be incredible to see it go below 5.0l/100km but it seemed to stabilise at 5.2.

Reverse camera: night vision
I just went out and checked but I am unable to take pictures. The brake lights do add a lot but there is a considerable amount of red light from the normal illumination (both at the corners and up near the rear window) and turning off all lighting eliminates that and really helps the camera's sensitivity issue.

Drive stats "After Start" not resetting on each drive
It is the same here in Australia in the Skoda but also in other VAG cars. It allows the trip stats to be unaffected if you stop to drop someone or something off, or for fuel or even for a short meal. I don't know if it is 2 hours but I think it is at least one hour.
