  2. What like France? I trust Turkey less than France and believe me, that takes some doing!! France treats EU laws as merely advisory and most are treated to a 'gallic shrug' and questioning look.
  3. I wouldn't hold your breath! You don't get as wealthy as someone like Philip Green by bowing to every hysterical media / member of parliaments request for money! Plus the pension deficit isn't actually £571M as that is the buy out cost, which isn't the same thing as the actual scheme shortfall. In December 2015 the shortfall was £225.6M and it hasn't doubled in 5 months.
  4. I wonder how many of the people criticising Philip Green (MP's included) actually stepped foot in a BHS store in past 5 years? 5% at tops probably, if that. The fact that BHS went into administration on Monday is of no surprise, the fact that it didn't close 5 or more years ago is. On the odd occasion I ventured in to one of their stores I found a generally dull and uninteresting product range, particularly in the lighting section which was one area that they used to have a good reputation. I'm sorry for the staff that will lose their jobs and the pensioners that will get reduced pensions, but I'm not sorry to see BHS go. Austin Reed have also gone and the only question is which one is next? Debenhams? Unfortunately, successive governments have pushed the responsibility for pensions on to the Company rather than the employee and at the same time pushed up employment costs with minimum wage, etc. so it's no wonder pension schemes are in deficit or have closed to new entrants. All pensions should be private pensions, including public sector, so that underfunding becomes a matter for the individual rather than organisations.
  5. The message being promoted by the Brexit campaigners is for greater opportunities to strike up trade agreements with countries that the EU aren't actively looking at, such as India and South American countries. The US is our third largest importer and it is our single largest export market and we are both the largest investors in each others country, as such the USA, despite Obama's spiteful and dishonest rhetoric, will be keen to see us move up the queue with some haste! Also, as TTIP hasn't been agreed yet and unless Obama does it before he leaves office in January of next year, then it may stall for many more years, so as of now there is no TTIP agreement, though tariffs for trading in the US are around 3%, so hardly a big disincentive. I also don't think we would be looking at a Norway/Canada/Albania deal, we would looking to broker a UK deal that suits ours and our trading partners needs better. Given that the EU is slowly failing, we might be better off out of an EU that looks evermore inwardly as the economies of the Southern and Northern countries continue to diverge, stretching the credibility of the Euro even further.
  6. Obama only speaks for American interests, he doesn't give a stuff about what's right for the UK. America wanted Europe to become one federal state in order to stop wars in which America would bound to get involved. The UK's departure from Europe would probably hasten the whole projects demise, so he thinks we should put up and shut up. His comments on trade agreements and specifically his 'back of the queue' comment showed his petulant side and given that he will be gone soon, largely irrelevant. As the UK and America are much more closely aligned on free trade and much more in tune on finance, a trade deal could probably be put together over lunch once he's gone.
  7. I'm coming round to that way of thinking (not voting to leave, I've been on the 'out' side since I first took an interest in politics 30 years ago!) Interesting report by Fraser Nelson in the Spectator (and he is in the 'remain' camp!) http://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2016/04/the-deceptions-behind-george-osbornes-brexit-report/
  8. Looks like VW are buying back cars in the US. Guess they'll mod them and re-sell them to re-coup some of the costs.
  9. Given the cost of an HPI check is it not worth just getting one anyway?
  10. You could try and source the parts from a scrapyard and then have a local garage fit them. You might get the parts for £50 / £60 and then maybe £100 to fit. I'm going off a similar issue I had last year with a 2003 Fiesta. Due to a scrapyard mess up, the £60 pipes and pump turned out to be for the wrong car, so I ended up buying just a new pipe for £85 from the local Ford dealer and I think my local garage charged me about £90 for fitting. If you're (she is) lucky, you might just save £150.
  11. The 'special relationship' has only ever been rolled out for political expediency on both sides of the Atlantic. I think it would be difficult to attribute anything specifically to the 'special relationship' that wouldn't have occurred anyway. The American's only really refer to it as a 'special relationship' because we talk a similar language and share a broadly similar outlook to business, commerce and interfering in other countries affairs.
  12. Why do you say 'isolation'? You wouldn't say the USA was in isolation would you? We won't be isolated, we will simply extend the number of countries we have direct relations with as well as the EU. We have a substantial trade deficit, not only with Europe but most of our other trading partners, so it's hard to imagine why any of them would want to put trade restrictions or tariffs in place.
  13. For a genuine mat try Superskoda: http://www.superskoda.com/Skoda/FABIA-III/Fabia-III-Hatchback-original-Skoda-Autoas-rear-trunk-floor-mat-made-from-heavy-duty-rubber They are easy to deal with and delivery promptly. They also do other items for the Fabia including mud flaps, pedals and the LED boot lights which are worth the upgrade. For the record, I have no connection with Superskoda other than as a satisfied customer on a few occasions!
  14. Yes, you're right, just checked the parliament website and it says: Summary of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 The Bill fixes the date of the next General Election at 7 May 2015, and provides for five-year fixed terms. It includes provisions to allow the Prime Minister to alter the date by up to two months by Order. There are also two ways in which an election could be triggered before the end of the five-year term: if a motion of no confidence is passed and no alternative government is found or if a motion for an early general election is agreed either by at least two-thirds of the House or without division
  15. Agree it might be a good idea, just don't know whether the 5 year parliament law allows for PM's to call a snap election at a time of their choosing.
  16. I'm not sure that the recent 5 year parliament rule would allow an autumn election and I certainly can't see Labour wanting one with the potential for such an uncertain outcome. Having said that, the centre of the Labour party would probably see it as an opportunity for the electorate to register its dislike of Corbyn and they could stand a chance of turfing him out. Alternately we could end up with a Corbyn led Labour party negotiating the terms of our Brexit or a Tory government with a larger majority, such is the unpredictability of the current state of politics. I also thought the UK had a period of 2 years in which to trigger article 50 and with a nominal 5 year negotiating period after that, it could be 2023 before we're set free. Plenty of time for the EU leaders to concoct a sweetening deal for us to have a second vote. It's interesting that the vote on this thread has remained a fairly consistent 55% leave 45% stay, not sure how representative of the wider electorate that is.
  17. VW Polo is £1400 deposit contribution (except S and Match) and 6.6% APR. Fabia is £1500 deposit contribution and 2.9% APR, but also first two services free.
  18. Try resetting SmartLink. Go to Car - Setup - Factory Settings - Reset Individual Settings/data and then choose SmartLink.
  19. I've just been loaned a new A4 Avant whilst we're having our A6 serviced and I'm surprised by quite how big it is. There's plenty of room for a 6 footer to sit behind a 6 footer with legroom to spare and the boot doesn't look much smaller than our A6 either. I'm sure it's noticeably bigger inside than either the XE or a 3 series. The one I've been loaned is an S-Line with the sweeping indicators (rear only I think) and if I'm honest, I don't think I've every used indicators more often than the drive back from the dealers!! It's just a pity you can't see them from inside the car. It also has the Virtual Cockpit dash display which is nice, though again, if I'm honest, I'm not sure that once you've set it up to your desired option that you would change it very often if at all. It's a shame you can't change the design of the dash to maybe some chrome rimmed Smiths dials from the seventies, or even select the car of your choice and have the dash replicated - knowing Audi, if you could, it would probably be another £500 option!! All around, it's a very nice place to be and drives very well (think it might be a 150 as it only has a single exhaust on LH side), quiet and comfortable on the S-Line suspension. Looks good in the Daytona Grey too.
  20. Head of Airbus UK has said that Airbus will continue operating from the UK whatever the vote. Hardly surprising that Airbus came out with this as they are about the most pro EU thing outside of Brussels. And since when has the leave campaign said that leaving will result in 8% of the working population losing their jobs? It's quite possible that there could be a growth in the number of jobs after a leave vote. Some jobs will be lost, some will be created - net result is likely to be no change.
  21. I think the voice control can be activated either by the dealer or someone with VCDS.
  22. I bought one set of the Philips White Vision H7's and just did the dipped beam. Not sure if the main beam is also an H7 bulb or not.
  23. We will have to wait until the details are announced. I guess it could be a free channel via the NowTV box.
