  1. I had a farcical conversation with a company today, who I know and wanted to give my business. I knew certain changes would be an issue of those above so raised that with them, understood they would but that I would be happy to set to standard. "no you can't do that" Me- why not, its making it standard. "because it will have been modified" Yes but its being put back to standard! Standard equals standard ! "blah blah"....even had the front to argue with me that if I put to standard anyway, then tell them its standard, I would be breaching terms etc because it HAD been modified in the past and I would be effectively being fraudulent with them ! (Clowns) How is that any different from any car bought anywhere? How is anyone 2nd hand buying put to std ever going to know ? Total horsecrap, just shows how stupid and misinformed they are, or maybe it just the high percentage of misinformed clowns that tend to propogate in call centres and should be instead doing jobs like cleaning toilets instead. Will try a few other places on this point as its piqued my interest now.
  2. Its true time and experience and care are in your favour. Mines £340 thats all in with breakdown and other crap, I don't actually need. It was actually cheaper last year but I can't be arsed to haggle as there is next to now haggle power when you have a few minor modifications to compare with. But my best would have been £200 ish with next to no mods which did raise the thoughts. Thats not much less than the octy 3 was to insure. Its not the amount itself, its the effect it has on bartering that is bloody annoying. I'd go so far as to suggest compromise on this would make more sense, e.g. just blackening/dyeing or recovering standard seats, they can't possibly complain about that surely ? But then this is the insurance industry we are on about here, they'd charge you for farting if they could. I do feel for you guys with this painful insurance at your ages. You have to stick with it unfortunately as it does take a while before it stabilizes but still seems any changes certainly aren't in your favour.
  3. I'm just changing the lot, sidewall protection itself is worth the change for me, the Kumhos (the most tread left) offer less than nothing in that regard against kerbing so not too worried about changing them early. They can be noisy too. RS3 however are extremely good performing, also excellent in the wet, quiet and rated well on fuel. Not so hard earing however as a downside. Its the first time I've bought any tyres for this since I had the car, I got the car cheap, I think the dealer were being cheap in coincidence to this so can't be too surprised ! I am going to keep the spares as mentioned, so the tread won't be lost, will get really value good proper rubber all around. For £300 ish all in can't really go far wrong. I know they are very good tyres, as I already have some in 17s form.
  4. How can it be still like a new car ? An old new 10 year old car maybe Its entirely possible someone has done 5 miles to work and back every day for 10 years in it ......I think I'll pass.......
  5. With what I'd call minor changes a bit of a headache for insurance now this is my less important/2nd car ! Weighing up the benefits of each: 1 / Skoda 17"s spiders ( will probably carry on running for a year to wear out the RS3's I have on until its worth changing back to the standard 16s so then wouldn't need to mention) That said, most don't really seem to add any loading for this. 2/ Cupra splitter ( is it worth the hassle, again). I agree it makes quite a nice change, but damn insurance. 3/ lowered springs. Nice for what its worth, but for what they add, they take away in comfort its important to note. 4/ leather seats. Maybe I could settle for std seats with darker covers, e.g. like the sport seats? Yes I really like the seats, lowering etc, but is it worth the hassle of reduced insurance choices etc? I could punt the parts on later on. I have to say though that there must be so many cars now with the above as default, that many must think its standard lol I'm going to allow insurance to auto-renew for now, at my cost, but noting I could probably do at least £100 a year cheaper if not more, and life a lot easier, but just ticket the "no" box. Perhaps this isn't really the basis you should look at it though but it is one of those really annoying things. Just a shame they didn't make the car as default, as it should have been. At least with my mk3 vrs its sorted pretty much as default - and was even cheaper to insure !
  6. Mileage just doesn't concern me, but then I've owned my last oldest car from almost 10 yrs from 0 up to 127K without seeing it just fall to bits, just exposing the "common flaws" you would seen on any mile car. I just don't see evidence of the car just falling to pieces when it reaches, 80,90,100, or any miles, as with anything its down to condition and how its looked after. Equally a "brittle piston" low miles supermarket sweep special is just as liable to problems, no point generalising. I actually prefer a car driving properly. I got a mk3 deal because of the miles, my reassurance from my own experience with high miles means I know its been driving as the car is meant to be, its the only way the car could have such miles on because its been eating miles. Regular servicing and its really not a problem IMO But like all things on a 10 yr old car, ultra low or ultra high miles matters not, its caveat emptor either which way and worth setting money aside. The benefit of buying a "highmiler" is the cars cheap already due to the misconceptions its trashed you can use to your purchasing advantage, so even if you do get any surprises ( which you could do with private puchase low miler equally) you have money aside to fix.
  7. There is another factor though here which is that its lack of wear protection - the rim literally sticks out from these bloody tyres ; checked and they are Kumho (mid-budget) anyway with no kerb protection at all quite the opposite. In actual fact there is a horrible shopping centre turn around with very narrow roads that curls left at ours, and the car is almost a bit too long for it (better in my hatchback). I actually managed to literally just kiss the kerb today there ! Already repaired but its getting bloody annoying and a tiny bit of kerb protection is all that is required to save me messing about ! Think I will change them, but keep them, as one of the tyres I'm nervous of anyway due to kerbing, the other can become a fullsize spare? So won't be money lost as I will keep the tyres as spare anyway.
  8. Is that price matching the actual cost of the tyre itself as well factored in ? If you supply the tyre I'd be surprised if it doesn't go up considerably. Or do you have someone local price match the cost of the tyre too to get it all in? I could ask them to do it a bit cheaper than £18 a tyre as technically I don't need diposal on 2 of them, I want to keep ? If they can drop £10 for not disposing 2 tyres (might as well keep them as they aren't worn to completion) its closer to £15 a tyre.
  9. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOX-Sports-Exhaust-for-Skoda-Octavia-5E-RS-TSI-Pre-silencer-Tube-63-5mm-/391415636287?hash=item5b2230a13f:g:zMoAAOSwBLlVF0YN Enjoy
  10. I'm interested in changing all my tyres to RS3's, as I'm approaching wear bar on 2 of the tyres anyway The other two are probably part worn (not sure exactly how much exactly but probably less than half wear, michelins if I recall). Camskill are offering for £234 for set of 4 (£55 ea) ! Called locally for a comparison and on price comparison ( fitted ) they mentioned £308ish fitted so about £70 for them to fit, or £18.50 a wheel extra for fitting. Does that sound about right or have any of you done better with RS3's fited ? Sounds pretty good to me, if thats fitting + balancing each. I know some can be a bit cheap and think oh, I can shop about and still do better but thats alright I think. Also do you reckon its worth doing the full set for best response all round from the car ? I did have a small sidewall nick on one of the worn tyres but with still quite a lot of wear left probably 4mm ( moved tyre to the back), so perhaps a bit paranoid thinking its worth replacing early anyway ? Not bulging or anything, like the fact it was nicked thinking would be good practise. I don't always have to scrap the part worns either - I can always stick em in my garage as spares in case I decide to track or something or get a proper full size spare wheel in future so keep as spares ? Maybe worth replacing all of them anyway to get tyres with rim protection, as thats worth its weight (none of the tyres really have much rim protection for kerbing at the minute) ? I've practically convinced myself to replace the lot (2x a bit prematurely) but just wondered what other inputs on cost, and doing all 4. Cheers
  11. They seem they are phone specific connections like muting etc. Probably for an optional phone car connection kit, which makes sense for a media module. Most radios have them.
  12. Please reword in better English, it may explain why no one can help you - difficult to understand sorry. You mean reversing light ? I didn't know the Fabias has any reversing sensors but if they are I would imagine probably in the plastic bumper and needing to come off IMO.
  13. +1 for driving it properly, just don't go stupid. I got my diesel fabia vrs from new and drive from dealers home was amazing, overtake after overtake lol but not past or any where near rev limits. Didn't do the car any harm......... 127k so far and barely uses any oil ( if anything I probably have a very minor slow oil leak), but I'm pretty sure petrol fabia vrs use quite a bit more lol If you misinterpret "running in" as driving slowly and too cautiously / sticking to static speeds you'll be rewards with a slow oil burner
  14. Makes perfect sense now - thanks for heads up on that. I'm gonna get one of these for my pioneer and also going to try same on octy amundsen later, that may be more difficult as it doesn't have RCA but this will be good practise for that ! Oh and I need to buy a new VCDS CAN cable for the amunsden fit too :( Hoping maybe a 2nd hand one will come around...
  15. "safety" police at least get it right mate ....
  16. Christ really ? To be honest, what you were already doing is wrong, if you are seeking a solution to be not distracted because you've been relying on text whilst driving etc - no bones about it. Illegal of course, and a very stupid thing to do if you've been trying to text while driving (let alone admit). No company will come to your aide if you are caught doing that either so no point explaining it was an expectation. If you smacked me off my bike I'm not sure I'd be in control of my actions if I came to realise you'd been ****ing about with phones. By the way if you mean you are taking a break but that I would call taking a natural break, I certainly wouldn't describe that as a distraction from driving. In fact thats a good thing and should be encouraged anyway. Isn't that the simpler solution here rather than all this gadgety trying to keep everyone plugged into the matrix at all times, just a thought. But I'm glad to hearyou are doing something to avoid being totally distracted, well done for recognising you had a problem with what you were doing, I don't agree really though that is indensipable with the "aids" you are using to reduce this distraction you've admitted to, but I guess we are just going to have to beg to differ here. I just hope you put your driving first and consider your driver above and beyond all else - which is what we are all expected to do but its very easy for some to forget - in fact some hardly ever put at the forefront of their understanding. ( I'm sure a lot of the younger generation who have been so exposed to gadgets) so its no wonder why we will continue get accidents as people can get their priorities wrong. Of course there is another party not present who has a lot to answer this and its the company in question. They have a lot to answer for if they are pressuring staff to make meeting illegally whilst driving - just to put into perspective I'd push the blame firmly this way that you are in this situation in the first place. Where is their mobile phone driving policy ? Would be interesting to name and shame the company who puts safety of the public so poorly.
  17. Why cut so much, they do another for superb that is 77x28 couldn't that go in instead, maybe with more minor alteration to fit.
  18. Thats the one I meant, or similar. The sizes vary a lot though, shame this seller didn't list them for clarity.
  19. JJC I am thinking of same, one for this car and one for the Fabia Useful I reverse out my drive way and it can just add to the inputs you have to consider if its safe to move (actually more useful on the Fabia as that has no sensors, at least I already have park assist on the octy just no camera). Doesn't have to be the full price option in my understanding, it might just mean more work than the official, if you are prepared to put some work in. Looking at perhaps the number plate camera option as that's something I'm interested in for my Pioneer dual unit in the Fabia, I wonder if they do a similar non screwed in option. Actually I have seen one simlar looking already thats meant to be for the superb but not sure they mean old model buts its definitely the click in type. I think its a bit mad to spend £250 for wire and OEM camera handle to be honest, its just an extra rca camera. Helpful if you share the camera you use and if it gets working, for the community that is.
  20. Nice reply. Its quite possible there are a lot of bad women drivers ( I think my wifes attention/consideration to driving is bloody awful compared to myself but wouldn't compare all women to her driving lol although there may well be quite a few like her ) - but as you said that can apply to men also, no place for sexism on this thread. I think there does tend to be a "generalization" or stereoptype (true or not) that *some women may not pay as much attention as other drivers all the time ( checking hair in the mirror etc or just bad driving). But you also can have the stereotype ( again which may have some element of truth) that male drivers are aggressive out to compete on the roads which gets themselves into difficulties also (slightly different kinds of situations but the net result is the same - driver error = fail). But to stereotype on just sex alone you might just as well be saying drivers are bad because of the length of their hair or they were wearing jeans or something else. Those people quoted in both examples above were bad drivers, you were affected both, but thats attibuted to the bad drivers of the bunch unfortunately Would you feel any better if the other sex had hit you instead ? I bloody wouldn't and would be livid either which way.
  21. Why are you seem so angry and trying to defend so hard? Not that long ago you wouldn't even have had access to these "aids" and sounds like you are defending it do the death. I was just stating that all these things can have an impact on your (read:anyones) driving ability, no one is (despite what they think) a driving god, and anything can distract them. Maybe a little, maybe a lot. Who knows until/if you have an accident due to poor care. (by the way you are right about at least clarifying that all things can be distracting to a driver, yes that is possible) I don't know you, or the next person in the street using these things, to judge how well you, or anyone else can deal with distractions. So yes, it does worry me that more and more things come around to distract drivers. There are also meant to be so called safety systems intended to presumably balance that out but when we get to the last pedestrian casualty ever reported then I will believe that has impacted enough to make any sense. Who said anything about banning anything? I was just stating an opinion that I think drivers aren't as good as they actually think they are and (generally speaking) due to that unfortunately means that as further things come out to distract drivers, because of course they attract people and sell/make money. That doesn't mean they are indepensable and necessary IMO. Its only really the idiots we have to worry about, but how to tell an idiot from a good driver nowadays. You may take in your stride with a nice cage around you but I can assure you the issue will become more relevant if you try mixing different types of transport. I'd recommend you try this - and I actually think it should be a mandatory part of the test nowadays - with so many cars and so many driving badly/ dangerously. When you are sitting vulnerable on a bike or bicycle or pedestrian and you see a car come past barely paying attention (or not at all) risking your own personal safety, you might see things differently.
  22. What do you mean ? Yes or no ? Pedal flat out or not ? Go or stop ? God that's a very scary interpretation of driving if that's your concept of it. I suggest you try some other forms of transport besides your cage to balance out your opinions and it might scare you into a more balanced viewpoint than that. No one is ever going to convince me that most drivers are THAT competent that they have so much % free cpu time to do other things besides driving - in my opinion that is an accident waiting to happen. Stats confirm that actually human beings are pretty lousy at these kind of things, and have accidents frequently, thats why planes are so reliable - they are largely kept in the air nowadays by hundreds of automated safety systems and auto pilots, but where human interaction IS required the pilots have 1000's of hours of training to support them. You can be thankful that the pilot won't be texting his mates etc which is I guess why flying is statistically so safe. Driving is statistically not and "text integration" certainly ain't gonna make it any better IMO.
  23. Seems a pretty cheap car tbh. Plenty of issues but of the not worrying kind, if I was after a low cost car for the wife Trouble is we already have the newer shape htp but nevertheless, got to be worthwhile for someone. If I needed a runner in a bit of urgency its the sort of car I'd certainly be interested in at that price, its a no brainer Difficult to price tbh.....obviously the higher you go the more likely you go the more likely that you may get no attention at all, so your risk..... Has quite a few miles and quite a few issues so that price is certainly priced to attract given the issues a buyer has to sort - or fix them and ask more but people are so ( inexplicably) obsessed with miles that they do make it more difficult to shift a car with any miles on at all even when working. If you can sell then sell or fix and sell for more, up to you IMO
  24. I can't see how this work electrically ? There is a single red cable only for power - but if you had this go to say, lights on (for number plate lights) then it wouldn't work to give power to reverse would it ?? Or am I misunderstand this and yes, the power is indeed for lights, and it requires no power for the camera at all, which is just the RGB connections. Actually thinking about it this probably makes sense and why I initially was concerned it wasn't powered for lights but in fact is. LED power for n/plate no different/better than the original bulb ? If so sounds like a no brainer. Thanks for confirming. I'd already found this before i asked the question but seriously doubted it might work - I think thanks to your feedback may confirm that yes, it may well work. Even for just £12 might give it a punt http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271733128282?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
