  1. Ken's suggestion was my first thought when reading your description. Within the engine bay you should be able to locate/track the cable back down to the top of the gearbox housing. Trying to recall on my old Fav but on the Felly it's a straightforward plate retained by a bolt securing the connection onto the drive in place. You'll need to make sure this has been relocated & secured correctly as failure to do so may give rise to your problem.
  2. ^ TBH I hadn't fully appreciated that! Mine don't tend to go in that area & typically suffer worst directly above on the flatter shelf. Went right through it a few weeks back whilst on repairs & to be fair the metal thickness isn't great in that area! A gas canister top is a first for me though
  3. Yep I know where you're coming from adurer. There seems to be a fair range of oil consumption on this unit & perhaps I've struck lucky in that mine uses less than 500ml in 10k (service point). However I've heard of quite a few cases of much higher consumption & appreciate this can relate to valve seals etc. On balance & accepting it's weaker points I quite like the AEE unit. However at times more power on tap would be useful & it's a pity VAG didn't adopt more choice for this model & perhaps it was restricted by a limited run of essentially the same model with only slight variation. A nice turbo diesel option wouldn't have gone a miss though! The bodywork is the bane of my life & leaves me wishing it had proved as maintenance free as the mechanical side. Fat chance!
  4. Hardtop agreed but 5.5 years & 65k virtually trouble free miles implies I don't concur with your engine perspective. Of course it depends on what you want from your car/engine in everyday use!
  5. I've gotta agree 100% and they are a right royal pita! It's a universally common problem & from reading up I seem to remember there was period of recall to help address this but not involving all vehicles. Over the last 5 years I've carried out some repair work at least once a year & typically post winter. The off side holds up pretty well & I've typically had more problems with the near side turret. I suspect to a certain degree over time they trap dirt/moisture and then corrode from the inside out. Tom's right in that any decent body repair/fabricator should be able to apply a good repair, extending the life of the turrets around the key areas. Agree with  the Funs!
  6. Yay! & loving that plate! My wheel hubs went the same way & hence the green alternative I'm now running with.
  7. Agreed they look cool & match nicely. I had similar a while back & did find that they look great when first installed but do tend to grub up quickly! I've now reverted to matts that are to a larger extent more maintenance free and retain their look longer.
  8. With the geographic distribution of members & a positive/willing approach, I can't see why this wouldn't work. Obviously the security of items would need to be considered & assured !
  9. The Fun normally houses the VW 1.6 mpi AEE unit. Thermostat was my first thought & agree some more investigation would be warranted before considering another engine swap.
  10. Hi & welcome. I had a Blackline Favorit Estate a few years back & covered nearly 100k in her! Great to have you on board & look forward to you posting in the classic section.
  11. Hi ya Matt & welcome to Brisky. You've got me interested so do tell us more with piccys in the classic section!!
  12. Good luck & alternatively you can disconnect the battery to isolate.
  13. I haven't got VAG but still carried out a re-set by unhooking the ecu, leaving it for say an hour, re-connect, engage the ignition (don't start) for up to 30 secs and then fire her up. Seemed to work for me but admittedly a bit 'heath robinson' !
  14. Hi & I'd almost put money on the fact that you got issues with the throttle body. I had exactly the same with the momentary lurching, which proved particularly tricky up hills (not that there's many on the Romney Marsh!). To save repetition there is guidance in 'pinned' - common issues & you'll need to access to clean & then re-set.
  15. As said commonly screen related & you'll find more info in the pinned common issues thread.
  16. Thanks for these Dave, a really nice set of shots with some excellent close up work!
  17. ^ That's right & I've got the longer ones installed. However in 5+ years I've never used them but suppose visually they add something!
  18. Morning John, Yes there was one running round Romney but haven't seen it for a while. You won't miss me if seen around Folk & I'll definitely look out for you. Photo wise ideally you need to sign up (generally for free) to a photo hosting site like Photobucket. There you can up load your pic's and then simply copy/paste the picture link into your posts on Brisky & job done. Happy motoring in the Fab!
  19. Hi ya, Nice to see you're keeping it all local. Funnily enough your colour guess was partly right on the Felly, in that it's not red but it is fun, a Fun Pick Up in it's distinctive yellow I think the diesels if looked after can be very strong engines & will hopefully in your case provide good reliable service There are a few of us dotted around the marsh & working mixed weekends I don't tend to get along to the SE meets. Did however recently make it up to Gaydon (nr Birmingham) for the national meet! I'll now look out for you & perhaps you could put a distinctive feature on the car to help - possibly a very visible Brisky sticker! Cheers, Rob
  20. TBF there is a reliance on consumer apathy on their part! In some ways not dissimilar from banks, energy utilities etc. :wonder:
  21. If that's fully inclusive parts wise then I'd say that's a fair price for the Octy.
  22. Hi John & welcome. I'm just down the road from you being a R-Marsh dweller. We have Skoda's all round, me with the Felly & the wife with an 02 plate Fabia Classic. I'm no great expert on the diesels but it's good to see a new relatively local member on the site. Look forward to keeping in touch. Rob
