  1. That was my original thinking ken, but you know what they say, no such thing as too much power. Arguably for a road car you can have too much grip, makes the limit point way inside the handling limits for the car. Safe, but not necessarily fun.
  2. I was involved in an accident over Xmas where all airbags went off, albeit at a relatively low speed impact of around 40mph. Having experienced it, this would be right at the top of my list of things to check!
  3. The reality is that we don't have enough electrical generation capacity to replace fossil fuel, not by a long way. Two things will happen over the next 10-15 years: ICE will be increasingly marginalised through taxation policy to indirectly fund the infrastructural investment required for alternative fuels, the net result will be far fewer cars on the road, they will become more expensive, and there will be hybrid autonomy / public car share transport schemes in major urban areas. There will likely be a mix of powertrain tech application; some H2, some EV, some PEM. Where you need range and high energy e.g. commercial trucks, rail etc, then PEM makes sense, for aero substituting kerosene with H2 makes sense, for small city cars, EV makes sense. The challenge is to move from brown hydrogen production to green, but that requires a massive shift to renewable electricity generation and nuclear. All of this before we consider the land grab issues around forecourt space that's required to service EV recharging and/or local H2 production.
  4. Picking up a sportline 220ps DSG on Friday, and I can't decide between a remap, new dampers, or doing nothing at all; although I know there will be some itches to scratch, I can't do them all.
  5. That's missing the new one in Milford Haven (or maybe Pembroke Dock, not quite sure) that is run by ITM power. I could just about commute from my home to my office (at NPL) in a Mirai!
  6. What remap was it, and who did it? Probably going to do mine sooner rather than later.
  7. Never mind 2035 and all that, In the near term, I hear rumblings about a white paper that might potentially outlaw engine mods. Be a bummer to shell out £700 with your local revo sweetshop only to have it snatched off you!
  8. How straightforward is retro fitting canton?
  9. First part is a given. I fitted a stiffer RARB to my mk2 octy vrs to tidy up understeer, which it did, but didn't really change anything else much. From personal experience with my previous superb, I thought the biggest issue was with rebound, followed by compression, though the springs were also slightly too soft, I always bottomed out the front on a stretch of road I've used a lot. Fitting uprated dampers on already soft springs is probably going to lead to a crashy experience. Ideally I'd fit slightly stiffer springs and dampers but with minimal reduction in ride height, but I haven't yet found anything that does that.
  10. What do you think is the biggest bang for buck to improve body control / reduce wallowing? I can't be arsed to modify it more than I have to, partly because I'm fed up of throwing cash at cars., so I've no intention of making it a tuning project. I might remap it in a couple of years time, but again, been there, done that, got used to it and not sure it's worth the constant worry of premature failure (which has happened already once).
  11. OK, that's interesting - quite a few Mk3 owners have fitted Konis and like them. I didn't want to change the springs, as the standard comfort and ride height are fine for me, but just want more body control when pressing on when I'm commuting across mid wales. The Konis are also quite a bit cheaper which helps a lot.
  12. I've consulted Dr Google and not been able to find a full spec for this MY. I've found the engine / tech spec, but it's the rest of the details I'm missing, would be grateful if anyone can provide any info or links, what I'm not sure about is what additional tech is fitted, e.g. lane assist, adaptive cruise etc. TIA
  13. What about B4 vs Koni special active on OE springs? Sorry for hijacking the thread slightly, but I want to change the dampers on my sportline asap.
  14. Insurance for write off is now settled (sad day, farewell Octavia; your star shone brightly if only briefly), so deposit paid, car being prepped for collection next week. I already have a shopping basket with some Koni replacement dampers in it.
  15. Interesting thread! In my day job I have been talking to an accident insurer repair sub-contractor largely about the immense challenge of repairing level 2 and above autonomy tech, and re-calibrating it. Whilst it might be straightforward to carry out the calibration oneself, bear in mind the whole point about calibration of any device is that it is traceable back to the reference SI unit, and should have a certificate to confirm just that. So unless you are using an accredited laboratory or workshop, your home done calibration is worthless, which from a practical day to day use might be fine, but if involved in an accident then it might suddenly become important.
  16. Just been reading about the various write off categories, hadn't realised that the insurance company should offer to sell back the vehicle after they have settled. I'd not want mine back, as it's beyond any repairs I'd want to make, but I'd sure like the wheels and tyres off it, and use them as winters. Has anyone else done something similar, and where's the catch (other than the ins co. trying to rip you off)?
  17. I follow this channel, lots of interesting fact based insights into auto topics, this is an interesting one on suspension mods for road cars. He does one on soft v stiff springs which is really useful if you've not grasped the importance of spring rates etc. He does acknowledge the importance of road feel on performance, as this inspires confidence; but bottom line is you won't necessarily increase grip significantly with upgrades. I'm just going to change the dampers on my car, I see no benefit in making any other changes tbh.
  18. Looks great, a bit lower than I would like it. I think max 20mm for me, if I was going to change the springs.
  19. For use with stock springs: https://www.dcperformance.co.uk/improve/uprated-suspension/shock-absorbers/skoda/superb.html
  20. Have a look here, easy to search / select by model type: https://www.dcperformance.co.uk/improve/uprated-suspension/suspension-kits.html
  21. I'm in a similar position, not much stock online that i can find, so narrowed the choice down to following options: 1. Koni Special Actives bought as 4 separate pieces, total £465 2. Bilstein B12 pro kit £700 3. AP Kit £328 I realise that 2 and 3 are kits, so include springs (lowering, which I'm not fussed either way), but the AP kit seems a bit cheap, is it any good? I've read quite a few threads about the Konis, and also Bilstein 16s (not 12). Is it worth spending the extra for replacement springs (presumably stiffer), and is the AP stuff any good? I was also thinking of adding a RARB, but probably not needed if fitting a stiffer lower setup?
  22. Possibly - got to complete the purchase of my new car first, should be done this week. Are you selling as wheels + tyres?
