  1. An AA cell pumps more electrons in its life than are moved in a bolt of lightning.
  2. has anyone tried / considered the Peugeot 3008? i think it and the karoq are equally un-pretty at the front, but it's getting good reviews. had a test drive today - maybe less road woosh noise than my octavia 2 though still lets some noise through.
  3. ccleaner (unless there are good reasons not to use it? The "intelligent cookie scan" may be related to getting data from consumers using the free version, but it can be refused by doing a custom install)
  4. You can now see what different paint colours / interiors are like. Not sure whether these are the options that we'll get in the UK, but the page is called 'en' so hopefully they are. http://www.skoda-auto.com/en/models/karoq#ExtendableModuleWebPart Asking for the configurator from the three-lines symbol seems to go to a Czech version. The front grill reminds me of a moustache - in a bad way. I wonder if painting the grill silver or rounding off the top corners would help.
  5. I've got the same question. One or two people have said October to order I think, after Frankfurt motor show September 14th launch . I've rung my local dealer and asked if they have any information -no.
  6. if you're interested in AM of metal parts for aerospace it's worth searching for Norsk Titanium and Sciaky. AM is still niche at the moment though for titanium compared with making parts from solid by machining or casting. GE seem serious about it though - they've not just bought AM machines, they bought companies that make them.
  7. Does anyone know when prices will be available and when when one can be ordered / delivered? I like the Karoq for the possibility of 4WD on petrol and removable seats; I'm ok with more floaty ride compared with Seat Ateca; but I think the Ateca is more pretty.
  8. I've got a Panasonic hard drive tv recorder; it was ok (if very very slow) until we had a power spike a few months ago. Now the hdmi output is almost completely knackered. My super old Humax has soldiered on fine though, but it can't scan for additional channels (just a complete re-scan).
  9. Me too; I've had a few letters from my supplier but I'm trying not to get one.
  10. i reckon "secret messages" might work as the theme music for a Bond film about a creepy company with people under surveillance.
  11. Currently 29C in my office (7:40 am). Has been up to 36 over the weekend.
  12. i think the Astons with the two centre lights looked a bit like chipmunks... But well done it was a genuine pleasure to watch.
  13. Maybe this is too far off topic... But I think some are good ideas
  14. I think I've read that at times the wholesale electricity price goes to almost zero if there's oversupply from renewables. In those times I guess a lot of people could use that renewable electricity through the grid to charge their cars. In 10-20 years' I wonder if we'll have cars connected to the grid buffering the renewables' input based on our expected mileage the next day.
  15. from growing up i expect a really left wing govt to end up with Red Robbo. but that might not be rational. I've thought that " labour might be inefficient but at least they care about people", but the labour council in Birmingham have been pretty draconian with stuff that affects me and elderly neighbours. But i also worry about Cons wanting to privatise stuff that ends up running badly. maybe on topic... if i accumulate money in a house, is that doing less good for most people than if i spend it so it moves around creating work?
  16. The picture's a bit small to be sure, but at first sight it doesn't look like heat damage. Also I'd say that getting that much power in a beam from long distance is way expensive (tens of thousands of pounds if not hundreds of thousands). If I had to bet I'd say a corner of a box has been pushed into it.
  17. Car magazine (same stable?) were OK about the ride interestingly http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/skoda/skoda-karoq-2017-pre-production-car-review/
  18. Top Gear seem very positive about it. They don't mention any problems with the ride either, unlike one of the Auto Express-family reviews. https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/skoda/karoq though they liked the Yeti too if I remember right.
  19. Yes it's lots of tiny welds where you can tell the machine how much overlap to put between them sideways and vertically. Each tiny weld has mutliple grains across it. As long as there are no cracks or large bits of contamination then the solid should be almost fully dense (>99.5%, maybe > 99.8%). Parts can be hot isostatically pressed if even those pores need to be removed (though, if they're filled with gas, they can come back if the part stays hot in service for a long time). Mostly test pieces under different conditions to understand the techniques better. But some fun things like a Reindeer made of a lattice to parts for flying things and satellites, and repairs to big expensive parts where only a small bit has worn away. Also a 3d printer for aluminium that could itself work in zero g.
  20. 18th May? I'd like something a bit shorter than an Octavia estate but with a bit more space (especially with the seats out) than a Yeti, with a 1.4/1.5 petrol + DSG, so I'm hoping this fits. I'd been looking at the Seat Ateca before. Not sure the Karoq will be as pretty, but never mind.
  21. I work in this area now, though my background's not initially metallurgy. Wrought billet has great properties, and they've had a long time to get them right. But "Buy-to-fly" is often terrible, e.g. 10x, so 90% ends up as turnings. AM of metals can be (laser or electron beam)+powder bed, laser+blown powder, laser+wire, electron beam+wire or plasma arc+wire. AM stuff tends to solidify very rapidly which leads to very small grains, potentially giving high yield strength via the Hall-Petch relationship (grain boundaries don't like to slide over each other; more boundaries = more yield strength). The grain size can be modified by heat treatment though. AM stuff can be ok but the properties are typically less homogenous. A large body of results has to be built up to give confidence in the repeatability of properties. For constant (static) loads, small defects are not necessarily so much an issue. For cyclic loads, small defects can be a problem due to acting as crack initiation sites. AM properties also tend to directional, related to the solidification direction, though there's work on controlling this e.g. via pulsing the heat source. AM tends to make parts with lots of residual stress, though there are workarounds with some downsides. AM gives more design freedom, so parts can be made full of holes like a bone giving good strength-to-weight.
  22. I didn't quite understand where you've got to with this. But if it helps I've got 70 cm of rgb strip left over from the back side of my tv, with a connector on one end. If you want to send me a stamped addressed envelope it's yours.
  23. (Please remove / move if this isn't the right place) Skoda's version of the Seat Ateca, and replacement for the Yeti https://www.whatcar.com/news/skoda-karoq-2017-review/ http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/skoda/skoda-karoq-2017-pre-production-car-review/ See more in the thread in the Yeti section:
