Wiring phone sockets.

Featured Replies

In the process of having work done on the house and I need to move a phone socket.

Problem is this socket has three extensions connected to it and all the wires need to come out so it can be moved.

Anybody offer me any help or point me in the right direction.

Cheers

If it's the master socket, be carefull BT get a bit annoyed and can charge you alot to "fix" it...

But you can buy replacement master and slave sockets from Maplin.

Just remember you'll need at least one master socket to make the phone ring and, even if you have a master if not wired correctly the extensions won't ring (I know from experience).

In terms of actually doing it wiring diagrams can be found on the web with all the colours noted etc. and you can get the appropriate cable again from maplins (although I've used some spare alarm system wire I have lying around!)

As Colin says, do NOT mess around with a BT or CableCo master skt, unless you're prepared to pay for them to come out and sort out your mistakes.

IIRC, the new style BT master skts have a seperate area for connecting extensions. If it's one of these just make a note of the connections and take out the wiring for the extensions.

Don't touch the main line unless you're prepared to pay BT for a call-out ;)

The reason I need to move the main socket is that it is on a wall that is getting knocked down tomorrow.

I only need two of the extension sockets, and there are only two wires coming in from BT and three wires off to each extension so I figure if I disconnect everything and reconnect in the same way minus one of the extensions everything should work.

Now I need to find somewhere to locate the master as outside isn't a possibility for a BT owned socket I should imagine.

As the others have said, don't remove a master socket unless you're prepared to pay the

Solwise http://www.solwise.co.uk sell a lot of ADSL stuff, including a "filtered" NTE5 master socket which is identical (same suppliers?) to the one that BT will install if you get their broadband service.

I'm not suggesting that you do-it-yourself, though. No, definitely not. BT would not be happy - if they found out....

Moved the lot and it all still works so

damn right, do it your self. i have moved loads in my time.

how exactly do you think BT know that you've touched the socket??

seeing as they put it where you want it and don't keep records, and with adding extensions you only need connection 2 and 5 and colouring doesn't matter but i think you usually use blue/white for 2 and orange/white for 5
