Firefox

Featured Replies

Funny you should say that, I installed it a few days ago. Works well with most sites, a couple I visit daily thought dont display properly.

I haven't checked 0.9, using 0.8, and that seems fine, apart from the odd hiccup with the dabs site, but then, that usually hiccups in IE too.....

But Firefox has taken over much of my browsing duties in less than one working month - less resource hungry and far quicker than IE. Love the way it handles downloads (better than random temp folders) Negatives? i got an error yesterday saying it didn't support 128bit encryption.........

i'll upgrade and run the fix if needed. Ta very much for that.

If you run Firefox/Mozilla and use broadband... give THIS handy app a go. has dramatically improved page loading times and rendering speed for me

I use Firefox and Thunderbird.. and im very very happy with them

I cant understand what the fuss is about to be honest. It seems to be the "in-thing" on every forum I go to, and yet I tried it and found it no faster than IE, the interface to be clunky and unprofessional (especially those awful toolbar buttons), and half of the extensions wont even install. Not only that, but it also fails to render one or two pages correctly.

I'll stick to using Avant...

POPUP BLOCKER!!! and its not going to let the latest js/ie flaw and vunrability infect your machine!!!

plus.. the intergrated google search bar is absolute genius!

I've got an integrated google toolbar in my IE browser (toolbar.google.com) ;)

I use IE and think it's brilliant - can't stand all this fashionable anti-Microsoft hysteria. Much as you all hate to admit it - Microsoft make some of the best + easiest to use software on the planet (except VB of course - but every litter has a runt  ), hence it is installed on most desktops throughout the world.

I use Mozilla (cheers for the optimizer Colin  ) and find it quicker and far easier to use than IE. TBH I really don't like Microsoft products and find Linux much easier (and simpler) , to use however SWMBO doesn't :(

But ie doesnt have tabbed browsing or background loading?

and IIRC at one point that google toolbar also had a "secret" seti client that would eat up processor power if you didnt tick the tiny box that said not to. the only reason i EVER use IE now is to do online banking as banks are still too short sighted to support other browsers.

Tabbed browsing is the killer for me. Not looked at .9, .8 Does okay.

Tabbed browisng for me means I can have 2 or 3 sites in 3 alt tabs. For each of these I might have 10-15 tabs open looking for posts, documents etc. One click and all tabs are bookmarked.

It is faster, does have the odd issue (textareas) so I cna't maintain the site for example, but these are minor issues in what is a great product.

MS also make good stuff and are unfairly bashed, afteral they really have helped to drive the consumer market and thats not a bad thing...things move on.

Look at Skoda, best in Europe made some dodgy stuff then stepped up again. (thin analogy I guess)

And i thought this thread was about clint eastwood.

Agreed. They didnt get where they are by writing crap software.

Tabbed browsing in IE is easy to obtain - Avant browser. Less than a 1Mb download, it'll give you everything that is in Firefox...

As I say nothing is new, it's all borrowed and blue.

Even HAL.

I love the open source idea, I really do. I Will have a look for Avant though, both browsers have good points. TBH it's which ever clicks first. Also handy to have some admin tasks open in mozilla, uniquly different from fire and IE, stops me closing them by accident.

If you don't like the look of it you can change it by going here.

Which ones? The Flash blocker is a brilliant way of stopping annoying ads.

Not only that, but it also fails to render one or two pages correctly.
Which ones? That's more likely to be the result of a lack of testing on the part of the page's designer than a fault with the browser. Many developers only bother to test on IE. If they follow correct web standards, the pages are more likely to work in Mozilla and its derivatives.

I've been trying to use Mozilla Firefox for some time now.

Positives: tabbed browsing

Negatives: It has awful problems with proxy servers, just hangs half the time when first loading a site (seems better after caching some of the content), cannot be configured differently for different connections, is VERY resource hungry (over 30Mb with one or two tabs loaded) hence makes my 256Mb laptop at work swap like mad, doesn't open new sites in tabs by default (you have to remember to press Ctrl-click), downloads finish with a stupid window with a hyperlink in it that DOESN'T open the download (you have to go to the downloads menu), the google toolbar is so tiny you can only type one word in it and the toolbars are not resizable, Shockwave won't run despite installing it over and over again .... etc. etc. I'm still persevering because if I try to be one thing, it's open-minded, but I'm losing patience with it. I like the sound of Avant - maybe I will give that a try.

Do you mean full Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox? Firefox is a free-standing browser that's much smaller than full Mozilla.

If you want a bigger Google toolbar, there's an add-on for Firefox that's very similar to the IE version but without the privacy issues (or at least there is for version 0.8).

The download manager in Firefox is excellent and does give you the opportunity to launch the file you've downloaded.

Flying off on a bit of a tangent here, if you don't like IE of Firefox, try Opera. Been using it for years now. Faster than IE, more secure and built in download managers etc.

My apologies - I meant Mozilla Firefox. You mean there's something EVEN bigger and more memory hungry?

Yes I know the download manager lets you access the file - I'm just puzzled by the dialog that pops up over the system tray to tell you downloads have finished. It has a hyperlink on it, but the link does nothing - you'd think it would at least open the download manager dialog, but no...

Edit: I downloaded the optimizer (ironically Firefox wouldn't open the computerbase site so I had to use IE to download it  ). What change should I see after optimization? It says it's successfully optimized my settings ...
