Jealous, much?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I've currently got the most powerful car out of my mates (Yeah, my mates own rubbish cars, mainly Citroens and Corsa's) And it's a name I wear proudly (I'm proud of my little Tubby motor :P). However, due to an "Unforseen/Unusual Vandalism/Accident" one of my mates has gotten rid of his Corsa and, thanks to GAP insurance now has in excess of £10k to play around with for a new car.

Now with this my Badge will most likely be taken away from me (Oh noes I hear you say :o) He's been looking at Golf GTi's (Both Mk5's and 4's) so what I was wondering was:

1) What kind of mods do I need to do to be able to beat a Golf GTi on the road, both Mk4 and 5 versions.

2) Rough price estimate.

I know with the Mk5 I really don't have a cat in hells chance as Luke's was seriously modified and the article I read in that Performance Tuner mag had it just barely beating out a Golf GTi Mk5, but with a Mk4 I heard they weren't as good as the newer Mk5, so is that more likely? As with his budget i'm guessing he'll go for a Mk4 than 5.

And yes, I'm petty, I know :D

The Mk4 GTI was so un-GTI-like that no other country even called it a GTI (and the info sticker in the boot says 'Trendline' or something like that! :D

They did a 150bhp diesel and a 180bhp(?) petrol, but I think most were the 115bhp 2.0, which is about as fast as a sit-on lawnmower (except in a Fabia. of course! ;) ) There were also 115bhp and 130bhp diesels IIRC...

Good to know Ap0gee, cheers  I had read that the Mk4 GTi was pretty dreadful, but didn't know it was that bad that some countries never recognised it as such!

So would a standard (Though at 154bhp and 290lbs/ft) Furby vRS be in with a chance of beating a MK4 Golf GTi in a drag race? How about rolling start? (Don't trust myself or the car for that matter for the bendies ;))

I'm pretty sure you'd beat all but the 150bhp diesel (should be close, though!) and the 180bhp petrol (same as the Mk1 Octy vRS, pretty much) - although if remaps start being thrown into the equation, all bets could be off... ;)

PS: I wouldn't let on about the 2.0 to your mate! :D

Would guess he'll need most of the £10k to insure a Golf Mk V

If he could even get one for that, even now...???

Well he always goes through his mums insurance which is some kind of disabled insurance so gets it cheap as chips, which seems wrong in my eyes and ticks me off a bit :thumbdwn: But that's a different matter

So the Mk5 would be out of his price range? Good stuff to know :P

So I should be safe with a simple re-map? Would it be worth it for a re-map with my current power output?

A remap will give you more power, of course, but will also void your warranty. Given that a slow, well-driven car will beat a fast, badly-driven one, and you say you're not confident in the twisties, a performance driving course might be a better option if you're worried about that sort of thing (plus will be a wicked day out!) :D

I think alot of the MK4 1.8T's where only 150, certainly the earlier ones. MK5's are definatley still above the 10K mark.

only the anniv. mk4 1.8T GTI had 180bhp(?) but 10+ grand leaves a tidy sum for remap, brakes etc after buying a 150bhp 1.8T. think you'll struggle :o

Oh yeah, I'd love to go on one of those advanced driving courses! Not just for the driving prowess, but so I don't drop my ar*e everytime I lose traction in the wet!

Don't think he's into the hassle of modding cars, so I think i'll be safe, whatever he ends up with it'll be standard

make sure he steers clear of Ibiza Cupras, LCRs and S3s, all of which can be had for under 10k

You can probably get a Civic Type R for that sort of money now, too - in which case you'll have no chance (despite what some people on here might think! ) Sorry! :P

Great lol! So i'm pretty much stuffed :P

Here's hoping he gets a Clio  I'll update the thread with what he gets when/if he gets it

You'd need a Fabia 2.0 to beat that, right?

I wouldn't have thought so, in my run ins with a 182 they've never "Left me for dead". They were faster, sure, but not much in it :)

It matters because i've grown accustomed to being the one with the best car, we all have our things and that's mine :P

a 2.0 and falkens ;)

Can British tarmac actually handle that much power?

Get a dragon box if you want to keep your warranty and ensure mate-embarressing success.

I was in a similar situation when I bought my car....

A few weeks previously my mate had just bought a 1.7 Puma

He was convinced that because the Puma was a "sporty petrol coupe" my lardy oil burner wouldnt stand a chance.

Took it to the dual carriageway one evening when it was dead, from 20mph off a roundabout onto a dual carriageway and surprise surpise up to about 60 it was dead even then by 75 it was sayonara mr Puma.

He wasnt best pleased, even less so when at its next MOT he had to spend £800 just to get it through

Now hes sold it and bought a 2.0 206 HDI 98ps lol

And that was before my box of tricks.... ;)

 Would've thought a clio 182 would kill a vrs pretty easily

it looks like he is going to get a petrol car in that case offer him a race to spain ir italy you will win  he will have to stop for fuel 3 or 4 times :rofl:

I've pulled away from a Clio 182 from a roundabout 30-70

:rofl::rofl:

Why not tell him to get a Furby vRS of his own. Just keep the best mods to yourself. You can get 01,02 Honda S2000s for under 10k. Don't let that on to your mate though.

In terms of the Mk 4 issue. I've done lots of research, before I bought my Furby and since. It's a lumbering old pudding, they brought the 180bhp engine in after 2003 I think, but your Furby would compete with that IMHO.

Mk 5's are 200bhp monsters, although I'm sure there are a few heavily modded Furby's on here that would beat a standard one *cough* Skud *cough* Devon. I read somewhere on here that remap, new turbo, clutch and rarb would set you back £2500. Some have gone so far so to ditch the air con, carbon bonnet.

Nice bit of competition never hurt anyone, but drive safe!
