Testing a new lens - some shots

Featured Replies

Great summation:thumbup:. I do have the Canon 17-55 f2.8 lens which has a little bit of ‘L’ glass in it, but without the weatherproofing etc and I have the Sigma 70-200mm f2,8 which is probably my favourite lens. Sadly I can’t justify a Big Prime or even some serious L glass. But the 40D would give me a flavour of a pro camera with it’s easier to operate features, better drive speed (I like to shoot a bit of sport) and chunkier body. Also the 1.6 crop cameras do hlep ease the burden on my purse when it comes to long lenses:)

The amazing thing about shots like you big heron one, is not only does it look fab in framing .........but it's IQ:eek::thumbup: I believe you used a x2 TC:eek::eek::eek:

The 40D is a very competent camera. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. (Just do not try a 1D series :D)

Yep, Canon 2xTCII. With that lot mounted on the MKIII, it gave me an equivalent 1560mm lens:eek:

Twas peeing with rain and very dull, so the weatherproofing on the camera and lens came into its own. The fact that the heron is very still (must have been sprayed with hairspray!) and I used a very sturdy tripod, allowed me to take the shot at 1/30th second!!!!

I'm glad I had the opportunity to borrow the lens - but I think I would use the 500 f4Lis more often - Look out credit card ;)

1/30” @ 1560mm equivalent!!!!!!!!! Guess your tripod combined with the inertia of all that glass helps :D does it have its own gravitational field?:D

Many years ago I was down at the back of flats where I lived and looked across the waste ground towards the neighbour’s garden and saw a heron next to his pond. I knew that one had been eating all his fish so thought I would take advantage of it’s feeding to have a closer look. Having watched a film with aborigines stalking their prey though thick undergrowth I knew the technique as if by instinct. I inched forward keeping low, avoiding twigs that would make a snapping noise (as happens in the movies) and gently moved the grass to one side and froze. I repeated this formula several times for about half an hour until I was standing right next to the heron……..within touching distance and yet it still hadn’t seen me!!! I lent forward with my arm and ……………………………………knocked on it’s head………………………..it was a bloody plastic replica that had been installed to scare off other herons. It was a bit twilighty and I might have been a little pickled at the time (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it)

There you go - you can justify it !!!!

A long lens would have saved you from getting dirty knees. I'm sure there is an offence there somewhere, assaulting a plastic heron at night whilst under the influence. :)

Strange you should say that as the heron belonged to a barrister and he muttered something similar when I told him of the avian affray:D

Oooh someone has been doing their research:D

I didn’t lose much at all this year (that picture was the horses going round for the second time………….well some of the horses;))

Ouch. These are fantastic.

Hmmmm, well Graham, I don’t think you can access any exif data, or do you have any special Photographing powers? I reckon you will recognise this one too (at least if I am right;) ). Not great framing but it was just before the G. N. start and I had to be a little secretive.

You’re a bit good at this. I like the frame. I am assuming you added it rather than your hosting site.

Ah I see the Exif data has been removed.

I have a set of actions I use in Photoshop. One click and a simple border is added. Framing piccies just lifts them from the norm.

The black border is really effective:thumbup:
