Windscreen smearing

Featured Replies

I'm fed up with trying to get rid of windscreen smearing. I've changed the wiper blades and scrubbed the screen with various detergents. The screen wash is filled with 20% genuine Skoda screen wash. The only thing that works for a bit is Holt's Mixra that you spray on a wet screen. The smearing soon comes back though. I'd be grateful for any ideas (apart from replacing the screen!) Thanks.

I thought it was just me....the wife complains all the time

I was going to try new wiper blades but I dont think tats the problem..I assume its wax/shampoo from when I was the car

I try and not to get any cleaning products on the windscreen and just use loads of hot water to clean it whilst washing the car.

The main problem I seem to have is the amount of flies that get trapped under the blades leaving the annoying arc of guts all over the screen.

It seems all octavias suffer from poorly cleaned windscreens. I know mine does no matter what I use on it.

Mine's fine.

I've always got good results with Autoglym glass cleaner -or 25% vinegar and water works well to get rid of smears. Mrs C is always nicking the Autoglym to clean the cat paw prints off our glass coffee table.....

Two things I have tried - Halfords do a Traffic Film remover, which is alkaline based and removes the diesel/tar/assorted grime you generally get in the summer months. Wet the screen, mist it on and then wipe off - seems to work OK.

Secondly, Mr Muscle Glass and Window Cleaner (the green stuff) seems quite good at getting the glass clean, provided there isn't too much gunk on there. Don't use it in direct sunlight though - otherwise you might end up with more smears than you started with :(

Happy cleaning!

Mine's fine.

That'll be the Ombrello then! ;):D

Might work too! :D

Exactly, I just cleaned with Autoglym glass polish, a treatment of Ombrello, hey presto - clean screen. Must remember to buy some for next year's application. :D

I've found that nilglass and the pink windowlene stuff works for my car. Usually comes down to personal preferance.

I like thinners to clean the screen with, be careful not to get it on the paintwork :D

Vinegar and water isn't bad, but you don't want acid on the paintwork! If you want to avoid smearing watch out and avoid products like Rain X, which can smear apparently, although I've never had a problem with it.

Will only smear if you don't apply it properly, ie not spraying water on the windows after applying the RainX and buffing it off ..... don't ask how I know that :rofl:

Thanks for all the replies - looks like a trip to the local supermarket! With regard to Rainex I was daft enough to use it on a Passat windscreen about 5 years ago. The eventual solution to the horrendous smearing was to replace the windscreen - honestly! Possibly I didn't use it correctly but I could never suggest that anyone uses that stuff on a windscreen.

I clean mine with MC2 ;)

Shifts all manner of gunk and moves squished bugs too.

Thinners is cheaper though ;)

Methalated spirit works best for me use on a cloth and doesn't need too much effort, better that autoglym screen polish and fast glass IMHO thats the same priciple as newpaper i.e printer ink. Dont get any meths on paintwork though.

Auto Glym fast glass is good for carrying on the continent for getting flies off on route and very convienient, can also be used for emergency removal of bird droppings.

Rainex is fine as long as you puy it on sparingly and run in well so you only leave a light smear/dulling. Then wide off with a slightly damp cloth and then polish if needs be with kitchen towel.
