An odd request of the honourable members...

Featured Replies

Would anyone (mainly moderators) mind if I pointed someone in this direction with a PC problem? I don't know if this has been done before as it's totally unSkoda related and to my knowledge he doesn't intend to buy one either. It's just that I know you lot are pretty good when it comes to all things techie and he's not having much luck on the Dell discussion boards.

I've said I'd ask permission first and that I'd get back to him by 8pm ish. I haven't mentioned the site name and it's no skin off my nose if you say no. I just thought I'd ask.

BTW it's something to do with disabling onboard graphics and installing a PCI card. His monitor keeps playing up too.

Cheers chaps

Can't see any reason why not Rich.

Lot's of threads on here are totally un-Skoda related anyway :)

A Octy or a Fabia?

Sounds a bit drastic just for some IT advice ?

www.tek-tips.com is well worth a look as well for IT problems.

One of the excellent things about Briskoda are the fairly instant replies.

He doesn't need to say why he is joining, and don't let him get sidetracked into discussion of colour etc, Rich. :(

Only if they have been chipped

don't know if it's in another thread (jumping the gun i guess)

but you mention disabling on-board gfx etc.

Hit the "delete" key during bootup (some dells, toshiba's seem to be set for F1 key instead)

This will open up the bios menu

There be something to do with hardware setup and the onboard gfx will be specified as enabled or disabled.

Of course, most bios are intelligent enough to default to the installled PCI card if one is present....

ie, install the card, plug monitor into the card, then boot up the machine. It should automatically pick it up - at least every machine i've built and altered in the last six years has, aprt from that one time when.......... :D

What he said. Dell's are great but there bios is a little lacking compared to that of other boards.

However if it hasan AGP or PCI slot, it should have a primary selection, failing that windozs will eventually see the (lets assume PCI) card and display via that.

Again I've not had problems using AGP and PCI, just have to set primary if the bios will allow it. If not then windozs or the machine will figure it out.

Any problems, give me a shout. Won't promise anything more, but handy to talk sometimes.
