Just saw this on Youtube

How was this done? Is it someone on here or has anyone done it?

If you search "climatronic codes" you might find something about this. I know on the mk1 octy and other cars with climatronic, you could view loads of things like speed, boost, temps, etc all through the climatronic display. :)

Look at the name of the person posting the video and then search it here.

I find this function quite useful on the continent, as you can get it to display Kilometers/hr too! You will also find that the readout is considerably more accurate (as good as gps/ Satnav, for instance) than the conventional speedo needle.

God I felt dizzy watching that clip

How? Are you saying there is more than one speed pulse from the car? AFAIK, its the same signal, just displayed digitally, so should read exactly the same.

I agree on the whole, but, the speedo gauge could be responsible for a certain amout of error, which would explain why the readout from the climatronic LCD would be different.

Pressing the ECON button (under the AUTO button) and the far right top air distribution button puts the display into diagnostics mode.

Turning the nearside temp knob will show a two digit number followed by a decimal and a single digit. The single digit is controlled by the fan speed knob. Example - to set 19.3, turn the left temp knob to 19.0 and the middle knob until 19.3 is displayed.

The diagnostic codes or electoric displays are shown in the passenger temperature display

19.0 Current speed in kilometers

19.1 Current speed in miles

19.3 Tachometer in hundreds (i.e. 08 = 800revs, 12 = 1200 etc)

19.2 Engine temp in Celsius

Pressing ECON again reverts the display back to normal. :)

Youtube completey ****ed the quality up, its clear as hell on my laptop/media player... :(

Oh, my video btw

The Digital readout reads around 3-4mph UNDER the analogue Speedo

With the margin increasing slightly as you go faster - never really got much past 80 to see how much it will then differentiate due to not wanting to risk my licence too much :) Not many D/C around near me ;)...

There you go!!

Being good and driving below the legal speed limit just gets you into trouble!

Pushing up to the limit and you would have been well past the drive before Mr Silly pulls out.

Pleased to see it sorted for you.

Not if the manufacturer chooses to have the analogue speedo display an optimistic speed to prevent any aggrieved owners from sueing them as the cause of the driver being booked for speeding. VW (like many other manufacturers), does exactly this, usually by about 5-10%. It also makes allowance for tyres that might be slightly larger in diameter than what they were originally calibrated for.

The odometer is usually pretty accurate, as there have been cases of manufacturers being sued for loss of warranty before the car had actually travelled the covered distance (IIRC it was Honda in the USA, most litigatious country in the world :)).

Most VWs also display a very optimistic fuel consumption reading on the MFD. IMO this is a marketing ploy, as unless you go to the trouble of recording distance covered and amount of fuel you put in you'll go along very happy with the fuel economy you seem to be getting.

I believe VAG-Com can adjust the ECU to get a more accurate reading from both the speedo AND the MFD fuel consumption reading.

anyone know how to do this on the mk1 octy?

:thumbdwn:oh, I thought that was just displaying the price of petrol
