Slight 'Wobble' at idle

Featured Replies

Now this is going to sound strange and I have posted it only because a work colleage is suffering the same issue with his TDI Octy 2. I have noticed this on and off for a while now but never really taken much notice of it. Sometimes when sitting in traffic with the engine at idle, there seems to be a feeling as if the car is 'wobbling' from side to side. The only similar feeling I can put it down is when your in traffic and a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction goes past you at speed. Now if the engine/transmission was 'in-line' then I could understand it could be a heartbeat at idle but since these are transverse then surely this couldn't be the cause. Has anyone got any idea ? I did say it was a strange one :)

Have notice something like this, not sure if it is the same as yours, the car seems to idle just below what it should, and as a result 'almost' splutters giving the car a slight shudder which could translate as a wobble.

It's not a 'shudder' more like a gentle sideways wobble. It feels as if your on a boat.

You might find the 'Cage' mod will fix this - search on Cage Mod - as it is widely praised for helping motors run smoothly and is very easy to do, once you track down the right grease

My 1.9TDi seems to do this as well. Its in the dealer for a new DMF (at only 20k miles) so will see if this resolves it

My TFSI does it. I asked the same question here a while back. It's like the car being hit by a gust of wind, but it isn't.

I have the same thing when the car is cold. I regularly have to stop at a set of traffic lights on the way home less then 1/2 mile away from the office.

Whilst sat in Neutral waiting for the lights to change I too can feel a 'shudder'

Sorry Chaps, just to reiterate, its not a shudder, just a gentle wobble motion

Do the revs change at all or are they stable at idle?

Mine does the same, been discussed a few times on here before - long and the short of it, it appears to be a feature of the Octavia II, nothing to worry about

my tdi ibiza did the same, not surprising when you open the bonnet when running and see the engine leaping about everywhere, its a trade off of having soft engine mounting to reduce vibration through the bodyshell. The tdi engine is not the most refined!

Any other strange side effects, maybe a few more revs needed while pulling away, easier to stall and maybe gear changes a bit odd almost as if the clutch wasn't quite got right on the change?

If so I'd say dual mass flywheel is a possibility.

My 2.0L FSI Octavia does this too, although so far I've only noticed it when it's cold.

Mine is the same. Had this for a few months now (since May) and it seems to be getting worse, as is the clutch judder too! Has now been diagnosed as needing a new fly wheel and therefore clutch due to consequential damage. Only really notice it when the engine is up to temp though. I'll let you know how the car is when it finally gets sorted.

a good way to detect this wobble is to look at your passengers breasts I find

:thumbup: have to see if the receptionist wants a lift to Tescos this lunchtime...

as an addendum, make sure you keep your eyes on the road, or you might end up looking at 3 points :)

Just had the clutch and fly wheel replaced by autohaus in Northampton under warranty/good will gesture from Skoda. Judder at idle has dissapeared now so problem solved. Fantastic guys down at Autohaus, just ask for Gavin and you'll be fine. They are a breath of fresh air compared to Wings of Peterborough. I'll post my problems with Wings some time soon, but i'd never by a nut or bolt from them again.

Is this strictly a TDI issue, or is the TFSI susceptable to it too?

Mainly TDi but some with petrol have symptons too.Its to do with the DMF which IIRC the petrol does not have.

Thats good to know as mine has the exact same symptons as you had so i will get it done when its in for service very shortly and also sort out the 2000rpm stutter with the software update too.thanks for reposting the outcome of yours
