Vibrations..hmm

Featured Replies

Lo all, technical question...

Just got a nice 1TB external drive today, works nice but just noticed that if its turned on, and I run my hand over its metal casing - I feel a "vibration". I know its not a vibration though because if my hand is stationary there isnt a vibration or if I put two hands on it and move one, the vibration is reduced.

I also have a portable DVD player with the same problem.

Im thinking that there might be a bit of dodgy wiring somewhere, what do you reckon?

Thanks!

Wouldn't worry too much about it... they do tend to "vibrate" a bit... after all the platters (probably 4 in your case) are spinning at (probably) 7200rpm in there!

I can hear my external drive buzzing through the floor in the kitchen! lol

Thats what I thought at first, but the drive is at idle and not even connected to the PC, just plugged into the mains. And the same thing happens with my portable DVD player when plugged in but no CD spinning :o

Now the portable dvd vibrating with no disc is worrying... but HD is ok... It will be powered up and spinning when plugged into the mains i imagine... if its like mine when it's not accessed for some time it shuts down until the pc goes to access it again

Is the transformer inside the case or offboard?

PSUs can also have a slight vibration to them

Outside :o

Got a warranty I suppose, so fingers crossed it wont fail. :D

Edit: After moving it into the network cabinet, Ive sussed out that even if the power lead isnt plugged in (and therefore powered off), and just the USB lead is connected - the "vibrations" occur. I can actually hear a transformer like "hum" to it when I rub my fingers across it. If I use the palm of my hand of a greater surface area it doesnt "vibrate".

This can happen on a multitude of metal surfaces which have electronics inside, I've noticed it for years and people thing I'm crazy!

Is it when you only very lightly brush your hand on it? And is it stainless steal?

Yup, your right.

Same thing with the DVD player, but the funny thing with that is if you brush your hand over the buttons on the right, it happens, but not with the ones on the left
