What's the chance of a stonking good trade-in deal on my motor for a new CRD Elegance for an early firm order?

I would never buy any car within the first two years of production, especially from VAG - come to think of it there are loads of design faults on the old Superb they never ever bothered to sort out (water ingress, anyone?).

Have a trawl around the Internet and see what problems people have had with the new Passat (rattles, handbrake, electronics etc.) before you hand VAG any money.

OK Roto (and all), I don't like any frog stuff. I think the new Subaru Diesel is promising but needs 6 speeds not 5. BMW 3 series/Lexus to small/pricey. Merc, no thanks. Audi/VW, rather have a Skoda. Ford or Vauxhall, no thanks. Honda, not keen.

Almost zero

Old shape superbs have never done particularly well , especially the 6 cylinder ones.

I suspect the new ones will be in high demand so there's very little incentive for them to give you a good trade in.

Thanks, I wasn't really hoping for much. About £10k. It's an Elegance, sorry. It'll be my 6th Skoda from the same dealer. That may help a bit?

Used values on them are suffering a bit I think, shame really as they are a lot of car for the money. I've noticed an increase in them being used as Taxi's now.

Yep agree there are more and more of them coming on the Taxi circuit now but have only seen 1 V6 so far.All the rest are 1.9.

A pity that, it would make a brilliant taxi for someone too. I have a Fabia VRs and I reckon there's only about 5 to 7% difference in real world fuel consumption between the Furby and the Superb. I know the 2.5 gets a bit of a bad press, but this one has been a very, very nice motor actually. Might be a shame to get rid.

The taxi driver who's itching to get his hands on my 1.9 PD runs a 2.5 diesel Superb at the moment.

He knows it's a time bomb as far as the engine is concerned - most taxi drivers with any savvy know this - but his car has been largely trouble free other than driveshaft joint boots, balljoints and an appetite for rear brakes.

He reckons changing to a 1.9 will save him 30% of his fuel for town running and the tax next year will be very much lower due to the PD engine's higher efficiency.

Mine's not for sale yet though - still working for its living.

Made a mistake when I bought the 2.5 it seems. I had a 1.9 TDi Octy estate and I was very happy with it. should have swapped it for a 1.9 Superb, not the 2.5 it appears.

I am having a similar thought process to you, 2.0 TDi motor, but am tempted by the Passat also (Highline 2.0 TDi).

I don't really want a VW. I haven't checked prices but I'm guessing I'd pay another £2 or 3K for eqivalent spec Passat v Superb? I'm wondering if I can get a "£10k to change" offer from the dealer my last 5 cars have been from. I'll post the results here in due course.

Good luck. I really liked my superb, so comfy for cruising up and down to england. now in octavia estate (we've got a dog now) and not so comfy.

The tax bandings have knackered any chance of a trade-in, and they are likely to take a further hit in the run up to March 09.

Best bet, tax it for 6 months at lowish price then a further 12 months before new rates are effective. At least it'll save a hundred quid or so.

The dealer I traded my 04 plate v6 with 60k miles still had it on their forecourt last time I looked.

- They still have it. Now less than the trade-in price they gave me. Things are bad in the industry.... it's a lovely motor.

Tax it for a year then send the tax back after six months. Then re-tax for a year.

Buying six month's tax is a rip off and you don't get a refund of all of the unused tax if you send the disk back.

Nice to have a fair minded Govt. which supports people without enough cash to tax a car for a year.

Hmmm, oh well, you persuaded me not to bother with the trade in. I'll keep my £10k in the bank. The interest on the cash will pay for an extended warranty. That way I don't have to get my hands dirty if something breaks. 2 or 3 years time I'll be able to run a much smaller/cheaper motor anyway. Good idea about the road tax dodge too. My road tax is up on 31st December 2008.

Did you get that price from the dealer? I have looked at the exclusions on some of the after market policies and I'm dismayed to see some of the exclusions. Things like standard fitment audio/satnav and exhaust catalyst are not covered. Nor is oil leaks. I suppose these are the things most likely to fail hence the exclusions. What does the Skoda extended warranty cover?

I have not gone well into it yet but will before the car is 3 yrs old in November. This price WAS from my Dealer and I will want to know any exceptions before I pay out - I also have an option with warranty Direct for £300 but no RAC cover and I'm not sure if water ingress issues are covered. Again I will go into the small print with a fine tooth combe in october - but I think I will go with dealer warranty as if it has been maintained by their Dealer i would think i would have a better chance of winning any battles. Not sure though????

Warranty Direct "Major" and the "Luxury" care policies exclude-

Breakdown or damage to parts (whether insured

or not) caused by frost, water, freezing liquids,

corrosion, oxidisation, blockages, contaminants

building up, sludge or silt, or other waste matter

that has prevented the parts from working

properly.

Warranty direct quoted me ~£230 for the Major care and ~£350 for the Luxury care policy. Both policies exclude the most likely causes of a claim.
