3G iPhone - Launches July 11th

Featured Replies

I know it's been mentioned in another thread but I thought I'd start a new one so as not to take the other one off topic -

Apple - iPhone

Seems they are still saying 02 only - Pity as I had hoped one or two of the other networks would have been in the running.

That is a pity about o2 only... i would have thought some more carriers here would have taken them up on it now that it supports 3g! Obviously not!

Wonder how much they'll fetch on the bay... or maybe i'll snatch an original one up at a bargain price??!!

OOh... just read... GPS too!

Maybe a contender to replace my MDA Vario 3?!!!

Gonna be a while before they get un-locked. Apple are using a new set of software api for the 3g phone.

ironic really 02 probably has the worst 3G coverage in this country.

Anyone know if it will now do MMS?

does it matter @ $199 / £100 ?

damn cheap phone.

It is tied to some quite pricey monthly contracts though too, so the purchase price on its own isn't the full picture.

v2.0 was never going to be on anything else but O2 over here really, given the terms agreed between Apple and O2 when the iPhone first launched.

- Phone cost has come down significantly.

- Monthly tariff has gone up significantly.

- No online sales (apparently) & phones will be activated in-store when you buy them (stopping people unlocking them?)

- O2 are going to offer a PAYG version but no price yet.

- V2.0 software is free to install on Mk1 iPhones.

I think this means that rather than going down as people have been predicting, the value of the original iPhones may actually go up.

A key thing for me with the v2.0 unit is whether the camera has received some attention. From what I can see on the v2.0 specs on Apple's UK website, it's still at 2MP?

I'll need to see it equalling the N95's camera/video quality and functionality before I even think about one.

"iPhone is now free on selected Pay Monthly tariffs*

There's only one thing better than an iPhone. The new 3G iPhone.

*Best of all, the new 8GB iPhone won't cost you a penny on our £45 and £75 tariffs. And it's just £99 on our £35 tariff and new £30 tariff.

All tariffs include unlimited browsing on your iPhone, unlimited Wi-Fi access, visual voicemail and reduced roaming rates with our International Traveller Service and are subject to a minimum term contract of 18 months."

Ouch.... how much a month :eek::eek::eek:

Let me help you. cheapest contract for a "free" phone is £45pm. 18 month contract.

So it's £810. That's a lot of money for a "won't cost you a penny" phone

so it costs pretty much the same a month as every other 35/45 quid a month 18mth contract "new" phone then...

assume now though you wont be able to effectivly buy it sim free .....

Or do what i did... buy the phone yourself and then just pay £12 a month!!!

lol

I would rather pay a bit more up-front for the phone and save on my monthly bill... but suppose they do it to get peoples interest by saying the phone is free!

Phil

I still don't get it how people can be so gullible these days.

It's like saying "here's a free 5 bedroom house. You move in today without spending a penny. :thumbup:Then you're legally tied into paying £10,000 every month for the next 500 years"

Come on

Lot of fuss about nothing imo ;)

Seems like a nice deal for V1 customers -

To thank you for being an iPhone fan, we're offering you an early upgrade to the brand new version when it launches on 11th July 2008. You won't have to wait until the end of your existing contract, all you'll need to do is agree to a new 18-month minimum term contract.

*Best of all, the new 8GB iPhone won't cost you a penny on our £45 and £75 Pay Monthly tariffs for iPhone. And it's just £99 on our £35 tariff and new £30 tariff. This special early upgrade offer is only available online at o2.co.uk anytime from 11th July until 11th October 2008.

But it's an Apple product Xav; people are more easily led...

No MMS STILL, and no 3G vid calling - only HSPDA.

and those with 12 months still to run on their v1 contracts can add another 18 months to that and pay a higher monthly line rental.

Only word I have for those wanting to upgrade their v1 or buy v2 - SUCKERS!

How many minutes talk, how many texts and how much surf time do you get with that package and who sells it?

I don't read it as being a continuation of the current term but an upgrade with a new 18 months - But I suppose it's a matter of interpretation.

You start a new contract rather than add on another 18 months

You start a new contract rather than add on another 18 months

That doesnt work. If you were already under contract with ANY network, the terms would state any upgrade whilst still under contract (which v1 owners will be) that you'll add the new contract to the old.

If O2 are willing to waiver this fact, then it proves how desperate they are to get custom - knowing many wont want one with better phones about to launch.

O2 is Telefonica isn't it? I wonder how Spanish businesses are doing nowadays :rubchin:

you can send MMS by using a 3rd party ap on the iPhone :)

Yes

Swirly MMS i use.. not ideal but it works.

Tbh, MMS and a better camera are the bits i miss the most between the Iphone and the N95, the Iphone interface really does make the N95 seem clunky and slow in comparison..

the few other things id like to see on the Iphone... ringing profiles (currently its either ringing or on silent)

Who actually uses video-calling these days? it seems like just a gimmick to me.. and probably apple too.

SWMBO & I dont agree with your statement
