Leaving car at parents for 1 yr

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm going 'away' soon for up-to 1 yr and the car will be sat at parents.

Now the cars done 39,500 miles and i'm not going to have its 40k service until i get back. The car will be taxed and insured whilst i'm away too.

Is there anything i should do to the car, i've told dad to drive it once a week, but he'll probably forget. Is there anything i need todo????

Thanks,

Matt

p.s. i'm going 'away' to a sunny, dry, dusty country where the locals are definately not friendly

Cant give any advice on the car apart from just get your old man to start it and give it a wee run, carefull the battery doesn't go flat etc..

And most important...

Best of luck on your trip mate, you're a braver man than me.

Be careful.

cheers, i'm classing it as 'a life experience'

And i'm sure it will be ! :D

Good look, and believe me it will be 'life experience.'

I went to the other more oily place back in 2003

If your gonna get it serviced when you get back home, then I'd not worry too much about it, other than to simply start the engine and let it warm up once a week.

Good luck over there btw.

he said sunny!!

It's lovely today...

Leave the handbrake off so that the brakes do not seize. Put chocks on the wheels or leave it in gear if indoors.

Good Luck with the trip.

I Salute you Sir

All good advice. Maybe even putting the car on axle stands to help look after the tyres might be an idea.

i would run the air-con for a few mins each week too

Beat me to it.

And keep it in a garage! :P

My step brother went to OZ for 2 years and my parents started up the car every week, but did not drive it for ages. Upon trying to drive it, It wouldn't budge at all, had to get a mechanic out as the rear drums didn't want to move.

You should be okay though as you have discs all round.

Have a great trip mate.

It's definitely worth getting it rolling regularly if possible. Otherwise tyres can go out of shape as well as grief with brakes etc.

Good advice here - it applies as much to a modern car as to a classic.
