When to buy a PS3?

Featured Replies

At some point this year I want to buy a PS3 but I'm in no desparate rush.

I know there's a new controller with rumble built in that's due at some point and there may be a PAL 80gb version if we are really lucky , plus the possibility of a price drop for the 40gb one.

Any idea when any of this is likely to happen?

Unfortunately the next deal available is always better than the one you plump for.

Oh , I know the price is only ever goign to go down , but when there's new hardware due and I'm in no rush I may as well wait to get the new controllers

To answer your question never I really really dislike mine i got the 60gb and i really don't rate them apart from blue ray which is all i really use mine for now is watching movies, games cost more money need to update softwear all the time for new game for me its Xbox 360 all the way XBOX live also brings a whole different side to game playing aswell.

Off soap box now

I'm gonna get a PS3 when I can afford it, simply for a Bluray player, and GT5 lol

My Xbox covers all my gaming needs, really

gt5 sucks balls and bluray is really annoying as it stutters and don't do on about 24p TV's as our full HD 42" LG LCD is 24p compliant and still stutters.

xbox is by far better and tbh i can't rememberth last time i turbed the PS3 on, months ago.

I'll give you twenty quid for it ;)

Well my PS3 is the business! LOVE IT!

I have played a xbox 360 and honestly can't tell the difference in the games! Xbox live is better but the PSN online gaming is getting lots of updates all the time.

Blu ray is AWESOME! I use a Toshiba Regza 40" TV and no juddering at all!

As for when to buy, shop around on Freeads and stuff like that. I bought my brand new 40gig PS3 for £240 about 3-4 months ago. The person I bought it off got it free with his TV but didn't want it. There are some bargains out there.

I think the PS3 is the best comprimise between gaming, home multimedia player and blu ray I have seen yet. Xbox is a games console, full stop!! Thats why i didn't get one!

Yep , I'll be getting a hi-def Tv at some point and obviously I'll be wanting a Blu-ray player for that so it makes sense for me to get a PS3.

The incredibly poor reliability of the 360 outs me off as well

incredibly poor reliability, we have two 360's in our house, one has broken but that was pretty much a release console and the other is about 6-9 months old and other than the one fault that meant mine needed fixing they have been faultless.

my mate got his brand new ps3 out the box and it didn't work.

and scvrs what exactly can a PS3 do that a 360 can't other than play bluray?

oh yeah, it has a web browser that i can use instead of my laptop or desktop

Not sure what else a PS3 can do other than blu ray and a web browser to be honest. But i know that I use mine to store music, photos and videos on (not sure if you can on an xbox) also I know a lot of people use theirs for "folding @ home".

Im not knocking the 360, I think its great as a games console, but I wanted the Blu-ray player too, and the PS3 one is said to be just about the best one out there.

Ive had a 360 from launch and had a ps3 for a few months the ps3 has yet to be used to its best in games and most are still only 720p there psn network doesnt seem to work to well but at least its free

Ive gone back to the 360 for there live service id sooner pay and have something thats usable but the ps3 matches the 360 on most things except the live play gaming

I prefer hd dvd to blu ray at the moment it looks a bit better at the moment but im sure blu ray should be just as good or maybe the toshiba regza tvs prefer hd dvd input

both great consoles the ps3 just needs to catch up a bit

There are a few decent games out for the ps3 + MGS 4 has just been released . As far as i know there are no plans to launch the 80gb console in the uk at the moment we are stuck with the 40gb one . I bought mines on launch and hardly use it + im on my 3rd one now . So far my 360 has been far more reliable which i have also had since launch + im only on my 2nd one :).. Just make sure there are games on the system that you want to play if not better you will be better off waiting

i likes the wireless media server capabilities of me PS3. If only it supported more video codecs though.

I too use this quite alot :thumbup::thumbup:

I'd suggest either there is a setup/setting issue or the panel can only support/accept a 24f signal - very different to actually being able to display it as its sent from the PS3.

I have to say that (even though I know have a stand alone BD player) the PS3 is superb. Great picture quality, fairly good sound (especially now it supports the full HD sound codecs - DTS MA). Also very quick with loading JAVA heavy BD movies.

Great bit of kit before you touch upon its ability to play games and act as a media streamer. :)

the xbox does the media server bit aswell but admitidly not as reliably as the PS3.

i don't hate the PS3 but it doesn't play games any better than the 360, the online isn't as good, we find blueray stutters and i don't like the menu system.

i expect the PS3 will become a better console to own but i don't expect that to happen in the next 3-5 years tbh.

Another good feature of the PS3 is that it has kind of an inbuilt tracking system in it. If you register your PS3 with SCCE, and it gets stolen, get a crime number from the cops, inform Sony that's it's pinched, then the moment someone tries to use it online, Sony will know it's nicked and provide the relevant ISP to the authorities!

as a games console the PS3 is still in dire need of decent exclusive titles, but seeing at that isn't Sony's no1 priority who knows when/if that'll happen :thumbdwn:

I have to say, since the xbox dashboard update last year, the media capabilities are fantastic..

I have Ushare running on our linux server which the eggbox picks up and can play everything... the only thing it wont play is MKV files.. (doubt the PS3 will either) but they are easily reconverted.

I still stand by the fact that i rekon digital downloads will be the thing to take down blu-ray.. HD movies are available from the Xbox marketplace... Apple TV does HD movie rental.. its the future!

Im not advocating piracy, i would happily pay for media when it becomes mainstream and is priced accordingly (ovbiously not actually needing to press and distribute DVDs should cut costs greatly) and X264 is quickly becoming the standard in encoding and is well supported.

Of course all of this is irrelevent because i dont own a HD-TV yet :o

I'm seriously lacking HD aswell :(

As for the MKV files, when I was using Tversity media streamer in XP, the PS3 would happily play MKV's, as tversity did the conversion on the fly. Only problem is now that I'm using vista I'm having trouble getting tversity to work. Which is strange as before the full switch to Vista I had it running great on vista, but since the last re-format and install I can't seem to remember just how the hell I got working properly :o:O:confused::confused:

I now use twonky media as recommened by our own A pinner. But it doesn't play as many file type as Tveristy :(

Try ORB...

The thing to remember is there is two different types of media server.. things like Tversity and orb Transcode files so they can be watched on various different devices that dont support it (i can use orb to stream to my N95 and Iphone)

Twonky, Ushare and WMP11 are DLNA compatible and just act as media servers and share media that is compatible with whatever is playing them to decode.

If i have MKV files (which are just a slightly different container for x264) i re-encode it to a mpg - doesnt take long on quad core....

Im also in the process of experimenting with x264 settings to get something that is supported by both the iphone and the Xbox.. then i will start to convert my *ahem* video library to save space ;)

Orb | Media Anywhere

Is this the right one only it's asking me to create an account.

Yes, it also allows you to log-into the website and pretty much view your media from anywhere or anything with a webbrowser

The thing with downloading fillums is the majority of people in the UK have limited bandwidth which makes this an extremely lengthy process.

I don't think the infrastructure in Blighty is good enough just now to support multiple HD movie downloads to millions of customers. There's only Cable that currently have the technology to do this.

I have cable and do download the odd fillum now and again (from approved sites) but me being old fashioned, it's just quicker and easier to bung a Bluray into the PS3 and we're away!
