Rattling Timing Chain

Featured Replies

Hi, does anyone know if the Timing Chain can be adjusted on

my R Reg 1.3 Felicia Estate - thanks in advance Janey

Yes it can be adjusted.

I'm quite sure it can't be adjusted as it doesn't have a tensioner and it's all hidden behind a cover without any access holes.

Some people on here have adjusted or had theirs replaced.

It can be replaced, but you definately can not adjust it.

I took some pics when I replaced the chain on my wife's Felicia 1.3 a couple of years ago.

First 2 pics are the old one.....

thanks for your help and the photos.

Janey

When I called around not so long ago the job was £160 at an independent garage (that used to be a Skoda dealer) and £200 at a Skoda dealer. Apparently it's not too challenging if you're a bit of a diy'er (and the parts are only about £40 or less) but I've not attempted it yet.

I havn't really got much experience of working on cars but i managed to change it myself no probs!

Made a big difference with the noise from the engine... i should have taken some pictures as it was very loose and had even more slack than shown in the picture!

But deffo can't be adjusted as skoda thought it a good idea to use a chain and no tensioner!!

For less than £20 for a new one with gears, and a diy capable job, at the time skoda probably thought why go to the expence of fitting the tensioner

yeh i done it in an afternoon, got new chain from skoda and new sump gasket ect, how long should it last before it starts rattling again?

Does the chain thing replacement apply to other cars with one like a Micra?

Chains should good for 100k+ miles

Any chain in theory will need changing eventually. The Micra is on OHC engine so pretty different, also has tensioners.

My engine is on about 120k miles, never had the chain changed. The engine is a bit noisy, but not sure if that's down to the chain or not. When I have some spare time will give replacing it a go anyway. Haynes book of lies suggests it is a sensible precaution to change the chain every 30,000 miles.

Haynes says change the chain every 30k miles?

They should have stuck with a belt then in that case.

Does it also depend on how its driven?

Would a low mileage stop start place greater stress on the chain than say one thats been on more continous journeys on coutry roads on motorways?

I got mine changed for £90 labour about 20,000 miles ago.

Runs like a dream.

How long it takes to start rattling i would say is dependent on how often serviced and how it is driven. i drop the oil every 5-6000 miles.
