Sump Guard

Featured Replies

Just a quick question. Does anyone know if a sump guard is available for the Octy RS? I've ripped my under tray off twice in Grizedale forest

Cheers

Would you mind posting a grand total for parts?

Jon,

How does the sumpguard fit, on existing component mountings or do you have to drill new holes? Also, does it reduce ground clearance?

Some of the speed humps on my commuting route are playing havoc with the undertray on my car, even at very low speed - I reckon pedestrians have to walk round them unless they have climbing gear!! :thumbdwn:

Cheers,

John.

Yes they do exist. Get your dealer to order the parts that Jon has listed above, ignore all comments by the dealer.

It does exist and replaces the plastic undertray. It's listed as an engine and gearbox protector. It is big and heavy and I haven't managed to dent mine.

Does knock about 1/2 inch off the ground clearance, but who cares :D Fits directly to the chassis rails. Get your dealer to fit it unless you have access to a tool that will do 12mm cap nuts (only about

does it stiffen up the handling any,and is there a reason for it IE the placcy one is cr4p they tend not to make them for no added benift, rather than not ripping the sump off

Taking a big guess here, but the only reason for a sump guard to exist, is to protect the sump (and surroundings). Apart from a bit of extra weight it will not affect handling. It might save you some cash in the future though...

Just a quick thought, but could anyone with a 4x4 "handy" (I walked to work today) check that the 4x4 doesn't already have the metal plate? It would make sense for that to be one of the "enhancements" over a non-4x4 octy.

Having cracked my sump going over a 'level' crossing, I too am interested in this tougher guard/undertray.

Mine is a 2004 1.9TDi, but it is also an automatic. Does anyone know for sure if this will fit the auto as well as the manual.

Thanks chaps

I bought a former Police traffic car sump guard but have since given it to Bengie because I diddnt have time to fit it.

The thing is at least 1m square and is very substantial.

It is NOT a DIY fitting job though - unless you can put nutserts into the chassis rails yourself.

The rear mounts onto the front suspension/engine subframe and the front onto a pair of steel legs (called Retainers on the parts list) at the front. The legs are fitted to the chassis rails either side of the engine and drop down about 20cm to give a mounting point each side.

There was a thread about a possible group buy for this a while ago.

Somebody was even going to try and knock up a DIY fit one.

That was me - but there are no front mounting points that you can use without the need for nutserts. In which case you may as well use the OEM one.

Ta then Phil,

I guess this point would be good to ask if anyone wants a group buy of the things.

Think i might get shot of mine shortly though, so won't be partaking in a GB.

My thoughts too.

Although I've seen a nice original stickered WRC with just 10k on the clock
