wheel bearing/hot tyre

Featured Replies

hi everyone, first post here. hope you can help, '98 1.9 diesel felicia. front off/side tyre wearing very fast on the inside and hot to the touch, the wheel is also hot. renewed both front wheel bearings, new off/s front tyre and the tracking checked. tracking out but has been adjusted. now the tyre is still hot on the top off the inside wall but the wheel/hub seems normal. why is the tyre still hot? any ideas thanks

is the break on that side binging on? this will cause it to get hot whilst driving

no, the braking is good and the wheel/hub is cold/normal. its just the inside top wall of the tyre thats hot after only a few miles driving

and it ain't rubbing on anything either

I'd consider swapping the wheels over and see if the problem follows the wheel/tyre.

the old tyre went bald on the inside and i think this one will too, with the heat thats generaterated, have i spelled that right?

u sure it aint rubbin? even on corners and over bumps? is shock goosed?

  • Author

generatered? lol

no funny sounds or noises. nice car to drive as my normal one is a 20 year old land rover

just can't understand why the tyre is hot and nothing else on the wheel

think its generated :)

thank you sk

are the suspension bushings worn out???

Lower spring cup on the shock absorber deformed and catching the tyre?

theres a 2" gap between the cup and tyre and it was renewed about 6 months ago. not sure about the bushes though, anyway of checking them. Off to RAF Waddington air show now so I won't be able to check any replies, thanks

My front left was wearing on the outer edge. Cant see it happening on the tyre thats currently on it, but the fronts need replacing now so will see if that problem was cured when the tracking and front shocks were changed.

Could be the lower wishbone mounts. Not familiar with the Felicia but I had this problem with a Pug 306. The tracking was spot on but the tyre kept wearing badly on one edge. Turned out to be the wishbone pivot bushes that were shot but they only allowed play when the vehicle was moving forward. The play allowed the wishbone to splay outwards slightly when driving the car forwards but when the car was stationary the wishbones returned to their correct poisition and the tracking was back in line when ever it was checked.

that's exactly what i was thinking:)

thanks for the help, probably be the job for next weekend

That or the lower ball joint. I've seen that happen, and the (lady) driver only picked up that there even was a problem when the tyre was down to the re-enforcing belts.

is the lower ball joint the one that is rivetted to the wishbone and difficult to change?

My girlfriend has just bought a Furby, 2001 (y reg) which seems to have these symptoms, not sure if the tyre is getting hot as such, but the drivers side wheel bearing is VERY shot. You can grab the wheel and rock it from side to side by about 2-4mm :(

When driving its very noisy, but the noise appears to come from the passenger side, not the drivers side, and lifting one wheel off the ground at the time and rotating it with the engine shows noise more at the passenger side too, I've been told this could be Diff noise though.

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to replace the front wheel bearings? i'm mechanically minded but have never done one before. Euro car parts has the bearings with hub for £45+VAT, and i'd rather get them done before the wheel falls off. lol.

Thanks guys, Dave.

got a mate to press the bearings in mine, he has a hydraulic press. the bearings cost approx £8.00 each. I think £45 + vat for hub and bearing isn't a bad price and the hub could be damaged aswell as the bearings. getting the hub off is not to bad of a job, probs with seized and rusty bolts though, and a new trak rod end will probably be needed to. basic spanners and a 30mm socket and breaker bar for the hub nut.

Ok, cheers adocs, i was hoping that I didnt have to go out and buy more specialist tools :)

When driving the car this morning I noticed the noise almost completely disappears when turning left (so all the weight shifts right, onto the REALLY bad bearing) which I found odd.

I guess i'll just have to take a half day from work and get it all sorted :(

Cheers! Dave.

That's because the extra loading takes out the free play that makes the squealing noises.
