Maltese Motors

Hi all,

Just got back from our honeymoon in Malta.... Had a great two weeks with tempretures in the 37-42˚C range just about every day.... We did have one chilly day of about 30˚C though.

Anyhow i'd been to Malta about 10 years ago but was out in the sticks really so didn't notice some of the beauties still running on the roads back then..... However this time we were in Bugibba which is a more built up area and blooooody hell do they have some crackers still running on the roads.... I've attached a few pics of the one's i managed to capture..... I thought i'd never see some of them running on the road again!!!!!

We were obviously on the lookout for some skoda's........ It's favorit & Felicia heaven out there ..... There were upteen Favorits, Felicias, Estelles, Fabias & Superbs. We only saw a few Octy 1 & 2's and only 1 vRS which was an Octy 2.... No fabia vRS 's which surprised us although a lot of the local young 'uns had these Toyota IST's which we both thought looked quite good when modded.

While we were there we also saw TV commercials for the new Superb, The mrs has decided she likes it a lot........ And also a few ads for the new Seat Ibiza which i must admit i'm very keen on indeed.

Anyhow here we go.....

A couple of Morris Marinas!!!!!

Smart Crossblade..... First one i've ever seen running on the road.

A weird little car that was parked outside our hotel for a few days and got numerous looks from many a fella as they were walking in/out of the entrance..... Seem to remember the badge on the front being like the orange logo but with 'WILL' at the bottom but can't find anything on it on the web!!!

Some old WW2 truck being used daily still.

Still quite a few of these still in service with the local coppers too

And finally a few of the famous old buses still in everyday use..... From what i could find out they all seem to be privately owned by the drivers sort of like taxis over here etc.... And you find them parked up at the side of the road outside the drivers house etc when they aren't on duty!!! There were a few modern one's starting to be used too though.

You see those here in NZ.

Toyota made a load of weird cars, all Corolla based IIRC and all weird looking and badged Will.

Here's one I spotted in Auckland, also badged Will

Malta is a mecca for old cars.Car's lifetime here in Malta is around 25 to 30 years old.If a car is desirable it get's restored if not it gets banger raced or it's life ended up in a demolition race. Many years ago we had a BLMC assembly planet here in Malta hence the many british classics, around 14 years ago the trend when getting our driving licence was to buy a Ford Escort Mark 1,preferably a 2 door model, remove the exhaust and air cleaner and fill the interior with massive speakers. All that changed when the Hyundai accent was launched.everyone thinking it was cool (I didn't,I stuck to a twenty year old estelle),and Malta was infested with these crap korean cars. The escorts then took a storm at the drag racing competitions Malta Drag Racing Association >>> ,click on gallery 25 and in the last five, six years we're being invaded with these grey japanese imports, taking more than half of the new car sales. In the mid nineties though Skoda were amongst the best selling cars here that's why many of the estelle's,Favorits and Felicia's still survive.Only one Fabia VRS was ever sold and it lives in our sister island Gozo.

I visited Malta many years ago and went to Gozo. I cant imagine a Fabia vRS getting a good run on the island its tiny..lol. I seem to remember red sand and it being to frickin hot to walk on.

Lovely place though and I believe its a lot nicer road wise etc than when I visited some 25 years ago. We had a Metro as a hire car and the road didn't really have a left and a right, you just drove where there wasn't a fecking great pothole...lol.

Cracking pics, love em.

I last went there about the same time, 26 years ago, for our honeymoon. The hire car man told me that the Maltese generally like to drive on the shady side of the road, which explained a lot!

Ooo nice!

Saw one of those wierd little car's in Dublin last May got talking to the owner and he said it was based on a Yaris, he had his imported. Went to Malta for New Year and was amazed at the amount of old cars still running. a couple of the Marina's, plus a Mk4 Cortina i saw were running diesel motors. Seems to be few modded newish motors knocking about. Used the buses to get around cheap and reliable service but the roads are terrible. Close by Bugibba bus station is the Classic car museum the cars owned by a local enthusiast, also on display are all the guys old Matchbox/Corgi etc toy cars from his childhood, good mix of cars on show, well worth a visit if your'e ever in Malta, and the weather not to clever. They do have a website i think it is classiccarsmalta.com, don't have a clue how to set a link up.

Nice pics:thumbup: Some very interesting cars there, was in Malta in '94 just after the World Cup, Brazil flags everywhere (my god they hate the Italians)

Motoring there is a bit of a free-for-all:D and way too hot for me:O

well urw rong there buddy lol. malta are mainly english and italian fans, you should've come at the last world cup, party in streets everywhere and car cades lol!

Those buses are awesome! Nice to see some style to them rather than just boxes on wheels!

I have really good memories of touring Gozo (it didn't take long) as a kid. Can't remember the place names but we had to march up the seafront in full dress (I was a drummer) in 40+ degree heat just after midday. Can't remember much about the cars but I do remember the amazing buses and the street parties!
