Car or mechanic fault??

Featured Replies

i had my clutch replaced and a new flywheel fitted last week and all of a sudden friday night i noticed a funny, almost grinding noise when rolling "in gear", no noise when on power at any level or in neutral then all of a sudden 300 yards short of my home(luckily) i heard a bang and the noise as before but this time in gear, out of gear, on power, off power, constantly basically. i stopped and no if i try and move in either 1st or 2nd it's like the hand brake is, the car just struggles and don't go anywhere and you cant put it into reverse!!

is this a massive coincidence or mechanic fault??

before the car was fixed, other than the clutch problems the gear box was rock solid, no noise, no vibration, no jump and or slip so i can't see it being gear box failure. the other problem is what damage was now been done to the box after the bang and slight crunch   :(

To the untrained observer (i.e. me!) I would suspect the thrust/release bearing has gone. I would have thought it would have been replaced at the same time as the clutch, but maybe not.

Hope you can get it resolved quickly!

I would get the garage who has done it to get it back in.. It sounds like

either the new clutch has failed in some way or something has broken and has jammed against something.. So don't try to move the car at all!!!

Or you might be creating more damage...

The release bearing would not cause the transmission to jam even if it seized

It would just make a racket....

the car was fixed a week friday, it had a brand new clutch, fllwheel, pressure plate, bearing, bearing sleeve thingy, oil and a new cv boot that had split

Get it back to them.. If one of the parts has failed then it will be covered under the parts warranty.. Just had a bad thought someone may have left a bolt or other part in the clutch/Gearbox housing that has got jammed...

Cheers

small problem, non standard clutch and flywheel. so if it is product failure then who is liable for labour?? not cheap stuff, its an uprated sachs clutch and apr flywheel

i might be knackered tho :(

next question is if it is down to me to replace the gearbox is it worth putting a standard box in?? how much is it for a re-con S3 box and how much will need to be changed to make it work??

just had mechanic blokey round to look at my car, said its an internal problem with the gear box :(

probably not his fault as the gearbox on the car is a sealed unit so it didn't come apart when he changed the clutch it just unbolted from the engine. bugger

the cars going over to his place on thursday to get taken apart, again. does anyone out there have any idea on the 6 speed box from the s3?? what is needed for it to fit and what does it cost??

any help muchly appreciated

WOW... What a mechanic... Diagnosis of a problem without removing anything...

What exactly does he think is wrong... You mention noise when in idle...

Is this with the clutch pressed? Can you move into gears with the engine running?

I find it highly suspect that your gearbox decided to pack in just after they had been in replacing the clutch and flywheel..

You mentioned oil.. Have they changed the gearbox oil..? If so why...?

Is there enough oil in the box?

You need to ask him all these questions, don't get fobbed off as they might have done something wrong or you have a faulty part fitted ( which will be covered under the products own warranty..

cheers

the oil was changed just because we didn't know when it was changed and he got the stuff from skoda, he hasn't diagnosed an exact problem just said its an internal problem and he needs to have the box off to see exactly what the problem is, he suggested a collapsed bearing or failed shaft but nothing solid as he hasn't had it apart.

you can now change into all the gears but it still wont move, if you try and drive the car it just struggles like you have the handbrake on like i said before, this is in all gears.

when you have it in neutral there is a slight flutter noise that goes when you depress the clutch, he suggested this could be wear in the first motion bearing(i think thats what he said anyway). with the engine not running and the car in neutral, we rocked the car and you could physically see the engine rock in time with the car where the wheels are locked with the engine, bit funny really its like its stuck in gear but not in gear as it idles happily

and as said the gearbox is a sealed unit that unbolts from the engine without the ned to dismantle the gearbox, just line it up and put it back on after, if it dont line up it dont go on, apparently. can any mechanics who have worked on these cars confirm any of this??

I assume you are after a secondhand one from a breaker's yard, bengie? Your gearbox is

:( ah yes its sealed but they still would have to have removed the driveshafts from the box and refit.....may have possibly caught the "planet" gear as they reinstalled them.....planet gear goes out of align and it would then "load" the layshaft which holds your drive gears???????????

:) Phil

Have to say that whilst I know that untouched items can go wrong after near-location work, this looks like (at first glance) too coincidental to be unrelated, and more likely a ****-up on your mechanics part.

Put it this way, of all the Octys on here, how many have had gearbox problems such as this?.... and all this after clutch work?

phil, what is the planet gear and what is a layshaft?? is the planet gear the final drive??

i dunno i'm only a sparky

and andy i totally agree with you, massive coincidence in my opinion too much of a coincidence :(

trouble in this case is proof

and phil i don't know if it makes any difference but on the octavia the drive shafts bolt on rather than slide in apparently, so you dont have to allign the gear as such, just bolt in place

bengie? Your gearbox is

Those will be skoda prices, You should be able to pick up a cheaper box from a breakers yard. Then all you need is get it fitted. BUT get the clutch checked 1st, its to much of a co-incidence. I recall you mentioning the place had not done a 4x4 before, perhaps they have done something wrong and trying to lay the blame elsewhere. Your problem sounds simillar to one experienced by TaviaRS, our initial thought was gearbox but in the end the clutch had broken.
