replacement air filter

Featured Replies

hi im looking at replacing my air filter, ive got a fabia 1.4 16v but im unsure as to what to go for. ive had a look on the net but am non the wiser. any help would be appreciated.

What do you want out of it?

You can get a nice Green cotton filter thats reusable which might help it breath a little better (Don't expect much in terms of performance gains though) for about £45 or you can just refit the standard one which will do 40k and cost you £10ish

id like something in terms of performance, i was thinking of fitting an induction kit, but seen as though my insurance is high enough at the moment i was thinking of just replacing the air filter. how much difference do you think it would make, or is it not worth it, and just wait till my insurance goes down.

TBH "performance" filters give minimal increase in power, make the engine breathe easier but typical 2-3bhp (if your lucky) increase. Might see a difference in throttle response......slightly............

ah ok thanks, looks like ill just wait for now and maybe get an induction kit when my insurance goes down a tad

£45 for performance filter

£10 for standard filter.

Keep car on average 3 years.

3 new standard filters @ £30

A saving of £15

Then again, I have just literally come in from cleaning my Green filter, only been probably 4-5k since last time, and it was proper gunked up. Foul in fact.

Cost me more to get the filter and the cleaning solution/oil than a standard filter, but I can clean it out whenever it gets gunky. If that's twice a year then £45 for the filter or £60 for 6xStandard filters. Now I'M saving £15.

Suppose it comes down to how better the car is with a clean filter than running with a blocked up/dirty one? And how quickly your filter dirties up (environment you drive)?

Well I've done almost 14k this year and when I changed my filter is was virtually spotless.

Maybe the performance ones attract more crud.

Surely that suggests they do a better job than the standard ones? The point is to stop dirt getting through?

Edit: And the small bugs which I seem to have had a lot of this time, though never really have got in there before?

Not sure, they are after all impregnated will oil.

Granted they are better, but not to the tune of £45

I thought the green cottons just used deep pleats of cotton gause hence the benefit over an oiled K&N in terms of longevity. I have very recently got a green filter, I think there is a sublte audio change with it in a very good way (deeper). It seems of good quality and its only a 30 second job to do :-)

You still need to oil the Green. But if I recall, there's less oil on it from factory than the K&N. You can still over oil it after cleaning though.

Not sure if it really makes much of a difference performance or sound wise to my car. But using my own (special) logic, it does stop a lot more gunk than the standard paper filter, and that means less of what I see when I clean it is actually going into my engine. And that makes me sleep ever-so slightly better.

I don't know was just going off what the Jabba page said "The Benefit of using the Green filter is the fact that they are dry, filters with excessive oil tend to cause MAF sensors to fail over a period of time causing running issues and poor fuel economy."

Someone told me the cleaning kit was really compressed air like you can get for a couple of quid for pc's however that could have been a rumour since the garage has now shut down (RIP Woodheads)

Cleaning kit for the Green is a wet solution which you soak the filter in and agitate for 15 min, then you gently blow the water out, dry naturally, and oil using Green Filter Oil.

It's not heavily coated with oil, but you are meant to oil it.

The instructions explicitly state not to use compressed air to blow out the deposits when cleaning. (whether that's to make you use more of their cleaning solution or not, I'm not sure.)

My piperx gets a wee clean every 6mnths, not that dirty, but then again i clean it regularly lol

TBH i found the foam filter easier to "care" for

mine gets dirty on one spot only, well thats noticeable. how much is the green filter cleaner stuff?

Someone much wiser than me once told me the Green cleaner is just laundry detergent and now thats all I use (Well a bit of washing powder and hot water in a bucket). The oil however needs to be the real thing, it costs about £6 a tin and will last for a very long time if you use correctly.

My Green filter is now 80k old and it's been great

I got my cleaner off eBay with the oil. But it does seem to be any old cotton-material cleaner. It can't be that important as it needs to be thoroughly rinsed off before drying/oiling, it can't be degrading to cotton and it's not got any warning/hazard signs on the bottle. I'd imagine laundry detergent would do the same thing much cheaper.

Only just noticed yesterday though that the oil has a slight green tinge to it :D

I make sure mine is dry with 10 mins in a 50 degree oven.

The oil is positively bright green! Spray it on your hand and see!

Woodheads has shut down

Yikes. Hope my fabia dont go pop the dirty beggers!

Sold me it with a remap which then killed the clutch :mad:
