Valve clearances question

Featured Replies

I tried to do the valve clearances today, but didn't succeed... In starting the job!

I was able to take the rocker cover off, etc, but I didn't manage on how to turn the engine by hand...

The car was jacked up from the front, first gear ON, spark-plugs out... But still, the differential thing made the other wheel goes the opposite way while turning it.

What am I doing wrong..? What am I missing here..?

Right you either lock the opposite wheel by letting it down onto something (like a brick) and then turn the other wheel. Or with the vehicle on the ground rock it back and forwards.

I have no problems doing it in 5th gear with the spark plugs in with just one wheel jacked up turning that wheel.

I assumed he meant both wheels were in the air.

or you could just put a spanner on the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn it over by hand

:)The crank pulley isn't that easy to get to with the underbody shields in place.

As anewman says, jack the front of the car so that ONE wheel is off the ground, and put the car in FIFTH gear. Having it in first gear will make it much more difficult to turn.

Thank you for your answers!

As Lummox said, both front wheels were "in the air"!

I'll try it again today! ;)

Why not use the starter-engine?

u need to stop jam the n/s/f wheel with someting e.g. a brick underneath it between the tyre and the ground. once u have done this i would put it into fourth gear. u should then be able to turn engine by turning o/s/f wheel.

it might not be the best way, but i simply use the started engine withthe cover off (of the valves) and measure the clerance with two razors on the intake and one on the exaust valves, and after tunning the carb a little, i now get no noise and water comming out of my muffler

I always just do them on the floor and rock the car backwards. Depending on what gear you use as top how quick they lift.

Just did it!!! :D

I was scared about messing up something, but everything worked pretty well!

I do find the car having more "power". I didn't gain 30bhp, but I can feel the low revs being more "pushy"! I'll check the gas comsumption and let you know!

Another thing which I didn't notice at first... The engine is quieter than before, nothing to compare... I can now hear the radio without setting the volume on OUT LOUD!!! :D
