vRS - what does it mean

Featured Replies

some people call it vRS some people call it an RS. What does it stand for does anybody know?

Legend has it that originally it was "RS", then the boys at Ford started getting all litigious, so they placed a "v" in front of it.

Apparently it stands for "victory"...

Or v = Vrchlabi where the Octavia 4X4 and RS are built.

interesting, yes I can see why the ford boys got a little upset they wouldn't want to think a skoda was in the same league as a loverly ford now would they ;)

Though, in all fairness, I think most Skoda owners on here would agree with the Ford boys. But for different reasons... ;)

And what about the fabia vRS, Denis?

I know you differenciate between the two models of RS by using either normal font size "vRS" for the Octy or some ridiculous small size for the fabia. The size difference is particularly noticeable on the "v", hence my question: Is the fabia vRS is also made in Vrchlabi?

Maybe, maybe not. But we know the Fabia vRS is just using a badge borrowed from the more worthy Octy, so it's origins don't really matter, it's just a branding exercise... :P

All Fabias are manufactured at the Mlada Boleslav plant so Rob's comments above are apposite. :)

vRS stands for 'very RS' ;)

So the Fabia vrs isn't "semi hand built" , like the Octavia vRS, L&K, & 4x4 Turbo models?

Oh dear. :D

I always thought the 'v' stood for virtually..... :)

Would that be the Fabia vRS that was put into production to homologate parts for the WRC car yeah? Not really worthy then I guess.

:P :P

when my dad picked his up i asked him to ask the sales man what it means and the answer he got was as PetRan says "very RS".

not quite the answer I was expecting mind you, was hoping the V would have a little more meaning but I'm sure if I make it up and tell people nobody will ever know to prove me wrong :)

Perhaps it's really a V sign to Ford ;)

Octavia RS = proper RS

Octavia vRS = spanked by Ford RS

Fabia RS = non-existent

Fabia vRS = imitation RS

People do keep mentioning this...however, (genuine question) what are the rules on homologation? AFAIK, the Fabia WRC car only shares the name with the Fabia vRS, ie. the chassis, panels and engine are all different.

So what has to be similar in order for it to qualify for homologation?

Rob.

Hmm...by reading that, the homologated car has to conform to the "figures" submitted, and such things as using an oversized piston, etc. are not permitted. So how did they get away with using a diesel engine?!

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick from that site?

Rob.

IIRC they can use engines from any car in the manufacturers range , not just the one that the rally car is based on.

I think it's a dimension thing to do with the body work that was the issue with the Fabia.

Not sure how the engine comes into it, but I know the Foggy Petronas road bike does not breath fire the same way that the race version does.

Is the Fabia vRS really over 4 metres long?!

I wonder if that is the reason for the big bumpers - off to Skoda UK to look at sizes.

Seem to recall Peugeot doing something with big bumpers a few years back to scrape into homologation...the Fabia vRS bumpers don't really look all that big though - certainly not as big as on the WRC!
