vRS - what does it mean

Featured Replies

Standard Fabia is 3.960m long.

The Fabia vrs is 4.002m - I think that is what you call cutting it fine.

The vRS badge was in use before Ford started crying over the RS term and Skoda just added the added the v from the motorsport badge on the RS badge to the official title (it is only over here that it is called vRS, the rest of Europe just call it RS). A cheap and easy branding exercise by Skoda UK.

Rob, the Fabia now comes with it's own, shorter vRS badge (although it does not look as nice in my opinion)

the rs is trademarked

even if it wasnt by ford, then audi would mind.. ;)

so the vRS is called RS in europe, yes, but it still says 'vRS' on the logo..

who told you that vRS is in england only?? do you think that in greece for example the sticker on the back is different? (RS?) :)

It's not really labelled the vRS. It's labelled an RS with a small version of the motorsport logo in front of it.

RS is trademarked by Ford UK and therefore Skoda had to change the name in the UK only. Check other national Skoda websites and see the car referred to as the "Octavia RS".

The v is the skoda motorsport emblem and stands for victory - I have an email from skoda motorsport confirming this which I can post when I return to the uk.

I thought the vRS was made for the same reason Peugeot made the 206 GT (the one with big bumpers) So the car was long enough to enter as a WRC car.

well, that is very interesting to know. ty

vRS = very Rapid Skoda

Yes I like that one best, might get a new badge made saying just that

Really want a rear window sticker saying "That's right its a skoda :finger: "

As promised

Dear Mr. ..................

greetings from myself and the Skoda company as well. Thank you for your

message. We are pleased with your interest in Skoda Motorsport. The `V`

stands really for Victory.

Best regards,

Zdenek Vacek

Not sure if they've just made that up after the event though. My (non-vRS) Fabia handbook refers to the "RS version", which kind of supports the view that the v was added after Ford complained about RS.

The story I heard was that it is Skoda who owns the 'RS' trademark from pre-war days, and it was Ford who had to pay Skoda to use it.

No idea why the 'v' is there, but Victory will do.

My understanding is that RS stands for Rally Sport.

My understanding was that this was a private company, not owned by any of the major car companies, they did homoligation to cars for rallying.

However once the majors became involved in rallying and they started to do the work themselves ( major money and development) RS started to struggle.

The outcome was that Ford bought a major stake, and swallowed it up.

Leaving it to look like it still is a private company & not part of Ford ( a la Jaguar ). So as such licence the RS to manufaturers that want to use it.

p.s.

Have you noticed that Audi now have S4, S6, etc, no longer using RS.

Steve

Could be wrong :)

I can assure you 100%that Skoda motorsport have not just made up the meaning of the motorsport V emblem, the response was from CZ motorsport.

I imagine Skoda UK agreed with Ford re the vRS thing, just a UK ruling due to Fords threats. In CZ and Germany etc the RS models are marketed as an RS as here is no problems with infringement there just as it was here before the launch of the Focus RS.

The V logo can be clearly seen on many WRC and Works rally cars, It was even even on 1993 Works Favorits back in 1993, I guess this was about the first time they used it after switching colours from the red blue and white on the Estelles prior to this.

Skoda have produced RS models previously way before the current Octavias and Fabias

John

Audi still make the RS and will be bringing some more very high performance audi's out soon including the TT and S3. Although they do not make the RS4 any more and the RS6 will be going out of production very soon.

Darren

RS6 will be going out of production very soon.

Darren

Pity, they are the business. If I had the money I'd love one.
