Wireless Network Issue

Featured Replies

This is a really strange issue.

I have a Netgear Wireless router and have had it for quite a few years. At the house I bought it at it worked perfectly fine with no errors, 2nd house worked fine for the 1st month then periodically stopped working, 3rd house periodically stopped working, 4th house periodically stopped working.

I put the failings down to the PCMCIA wireless card that I was using because my parents bought a new laptop last month and their laptop worked fine at our current house on the wireless network. I bought a new laptop this month and it has been working flawlessly on the wireless network UNTIL swmbo parks her fabia near the house:confused: and then it all started to make sense,

1st house - No Fabia

2nd house - lived there for about a month before picking up the fabia

I've never really thought about it but yesterday I saw her driving it down the street and the closer to the house she came the more the signal dropped

Does anyone have any ideas?? It only seems to be her car. ( I have sent her out of the street leaving her car on the drive and it still happened so I can't blame her, I also go her to take the kids with her so it's not them either

does it do it with any car parked in that space of just the fabia?

Go into the admin pages of the router & set it to a fixed channel. Swap around a bit until you find a channel with no interference. If you have a think about all the kit blasting rf signals round the neighbourhood I sometimes wonder that anything works at all!

It's just SWMBO's fabia. One of our neighbors also has a fabia (non vrs) and that doesn't affect the wireless signal. I can park anywhere on the drive and it's fine, also I've never noticed it failing with my parents or sister parking on the drive when SWMBO is out

Any wireless devices in the fabia, eg. bluetooth handsfree, bluetooth phone with bluetooth enabled. Bluetooth uses the same frequency range as wireless networks, so introducing another device could have the effect you are seeing.

Thanks,

I'll give it a go when I get home tonight.

its the government tracker that has been fitted secretly to track what people are up to, its on the blink so expect the car to be "stolen" any day now as you've higlighted the error but don't worry as the car will turn up un damaged very quickly and quite unusually your insurer won't even mark it against you ;)

have you tried re positioning the router?

Nope, there's no bluetooth in the car.

yes, I've tried repositioning the router, the problem is the car affects it from a greater distance than I could move it from the drive.

Nope, there's no bluetooth in the car.

The car is obviously emitting on the wireless frequencies.

No aftermarket alarm in there is there?

Another thing to do would be to see if turning the radio on/off with the engine off effects it.

Does it only happen when the engine is running or as soon as the ignition is on as this will rule out a lot of the cars components if it only happens when the engine is actually started.

I know alternators can emit if they are wearing out, but then so can the cars processors in the ECU etc if it's frequency is right for the wavelength you have problems with.

Maybe the VRS wants to be a jack of all trades and take care of all your wireless needs too.

If it's only when the engine is running, I'd probably take off the aux belt if it runs the alternator and nothing else important and just try the car for a minute there to see if the wireless is affected. If not you have your answer and it's time for an exchange alternator.

Obviously don't forget to put the belt back on though or you will have a mighty unimpressed SWMBO.

Hi,

Does she use a FM transmitter to transmit music from an ipod or other portable music device to the standard head unit?

Regards

It happens if the engine is running or not and there's no aftermarket alarm

No, she only has the radio on or cd's

Very much doubt the car is broadcasting anything.

Very odd tho.

who are the people who use to chase the cb lot and illegal radio stations? they be the people to contact as all electrical goods have to pass a test to ensure it doesnt interfere with other electrical goods etc. in the usa they call the FCC, just cant think of the uk version off hand.

If it's just that car then the car has to be emitting on the wireless frequency and causing interference. It's IMHO the only logical option.

If the car is sat on the drive with the keys out does it still cause the effect or only when the ignition is turned on?

Sorry for the questioning, but I'm just trying to narrow it down, so we can work out what components are on at the time and potentially causing it.

its gods way of telling you not to buy a fabia :)

It does it with or without the keys in and makes no difference if it's locked or not.

And here's another twist.

When I lose connectivity with my wireless network I can still see my neighbors Wireless Router.

I'll do a pic to show where things are located.

Have you tried changing wireless channel from 6 to 11 etc?

Also just wondering if it recovers after 5 minutes or so, eg the electroncs are chattering.

If you pull the car in the opposite way eg reverse rather than forwards does it make any difference as I'm just wondering if it's reflecting another persons 802.11N network and trashing yours. That's highly unlikely though.

If you park the car and watch the network get trashed and then disconnect the car battery and give it a minute what happens to the network signal?

Right, I've found I get the best signal using channel 8 and I can now use the wireless network when SWMBO's car is running or parked on the drive however it now only stops working when we lock the car using the remote. Does the VRS have an alarm or some sort of motion sensor or perimity sensor?

That is really really really weird.

If it's only your lady's car then it can't be the box, just the car.

Only thing I can think of is that one of the cars circuits is causing issues.

You could try pulling a fuse at a time and then putting it back until it stops I guess :S
