Odd and Expensive Tyre Wear

Featured Replies

Has anyone had odd tyre wear on the rear tyres, I drive a VRS TFSI and have had 2 sets of tyre on the rear now, going out of shape leading to a wurring noise not that dissimilar to a wheel bearing noice.

I have today had 2 new tyres fitted to the front that have warn out in the middle despite running them at around 29 psi (Goodyear F1 DSG) 10,3000 miles and at the same time the fitter pointed out that the rears (Goodyear F1 DSG) with 6mm of tread are all out of shape.

When you spin the rear wheel and hover your hand over the surface it is

all over the place, up and down like a rollercoaster, hence the noise.

The fitter thinks it is likely to be a rear suspension problem as this is the second set to go the same way. I have had Michelin Pilot Exacto put on the rears today and don’t want them to go the same way, any ideas would be welcome!!

First step is a full geometry check and possibly replace any suspect bushes etc.

I've had this too.

Were the tyres checked when new to be sure they were circular, not oval as they would appear to be now. It is not unknown for new tyres to be out of shape!

Also some tyres suit some cars more than others; certainly my Michelin Pilot Exaltos are spot on on my vRS, and other Briskodians report well of Pilot Sports. Perhaps Goodyears are one of those that suit the vRS less well.

Full laser allignment will cost 40 to 90 quid but is well worth it.

Had mine done the day after i purchased a Ex-demo vRS Tdi, made a huge difference to the handling too. Now 7000 miles later (12 in total) the rears are showing no unusual wear.

Are the pressures not 31psi, not 29 by the way?

Have a look at Stus site (link below) for the new camber settings that you can print and take to the guys doing the wheel alignment.

Don't just get the alignment, go and get the whole geometry checked as it covers much more. I was charged nothing for the check, then £25 to adjust one axle or £45 if a wheel/wheels on both needed doing.

I have now spoken to my Skoda dealership and they are going to book my car in for a geometry check but have to send it to a VW dealer as they do not have the tools to do it.

They have not said anything about the cost, so it may be done under the warranty, but they did tell me about six months ago that a chamber check was not covered under warranty.

They have offered my a car for the day and are usually very good so you never know, good will and all that. I certainly would not put Goodyear F1 on it again and hope the Michelin will wear longer.

my f1's did the same, out of shape and funny noise, they had a laser aligment when they were fitted. there are some other threads on here that mention about the tyres going funny if you have a heavy load in the back regularly. I swapped to Falken 452 and theyve been fine since.

i can't see it being the tyres doing it, summats wrong with the car.

I had a mate mention he heard similiar in mine the other day and did think a possible bearing noise.

I was running higher pressure in the tyres which resulted in centre wear but have dropped them now, maybe this might have affected it.

Please keep me updated with your progress.

This happened to my Focus, the rear tyres wore like 50p pieces and it was caused by the toe-out being knocked out on the rear, apparently a common fault on cars with that type of rear suspension. It happened on Conti Sport Contacts, Eagle F1's and Hankook Ventus..the roads round here are rubbish! A full alignment check at £90 found this problem.

My dad's Octy II has chewed out the rear tyres in 6 months (albeit he's done 25,000 kays), and after seeing Stu's technical guff I've advised him to check his rear alignmet. I just took delivery of a new Octy II VRS (called and RS in Australia, strangely) and the dealer is going to be checking its alignment this week so I avoid the same problems.

I had this too.Tyres suffered from Heel and Toe effect.

The tread block leading edges seemed to be higher than the trailing edges.

Pressure were ok.

Moved these tyres to the front, new ones placed on back.

Front tyres extremely noisy, like having Landrover m&s tyres fitted.

I have now had the tyres swapped back until Skoda manage to book it in for the chamber check as I don’t want to destroy my new Michelins, and anyway the Goodyears being moved to the front was a bad move, the noise in unbelievable and every time I brake it feels as if the brake discs are warped.

As soon as it gets the all clear from Skoda I will bit the bullet and buy another 2 more Michelins to replace the shot Goodyears. Great they will only cost me £265, Oh joy

I am spending more money on tyres than petrol and that says a lot.

Thanks to all of you who has replied and backed up my suspicions to what is wrong.

Let’s see if Skoda come good on this one and don’t try and charge me.

Don't bet on it not being the Goodyears at fault. There was a major problem with that model of tyre a few years back wearing oddly on Astras.

This effect (Heel & Toe; with tread block leading edges seemed to be higher than the trailing edges) is due to the fact that rear tyres on a front wheel drive car are only ever being worked by braking effect and never acceleration; thus the leading edge of the tread blocks get worn more. We had this on one of our Company Astras recently and the tyres rumbled as if a wheel bearing had worn.

It can be cured in two ways; either switch the tyres front to back every, say, 5000 miles or switch the rear tyres left to right every, say, 5000 miles. This will even out the tyre wear and negate the problem.

Another alternative is to find a tyre with a tread pattern that is not susceptible to this sort of wear pattern.

  • 4 weeks later...

Im having the same problem, rear tyre noise sounds like wheel bearing problem, mine have worn very badly, n/s/r tyre outer edge 2mm, inner edge 6mm.

Paid £55 for a 4 wheel alignment & have not noticed any difference, in fact the tyres are noisier probably because the rear is setup correctly & the rear tyres being scrubbed as they should be, car done 22K miles.

Rear tyres are crap dunlops.

One of my rear Dunlops developed this fault with about 4mm of tread left after 40k, I put the spare (unused) on and the noise went away. I spoke to the dealer before replacing the rear tyres & showed him the unevenly worn dunlop. He said it could be the tyre or it could be that the alignment is out. I would have to pay for the full laser alignment check (about £90) but if it was out, SUK would probably say that I had kerbed the car or hit a pothole etc... He did add that most modern vehicles are easily 'knocked out' of alignment with speed bumps etc.. I have fitted Goodyears and they are OK at the moment.

There does seem to be a tredn with those Dunlops wearing badly.

did you replace the duff tyres when you got the alignment done? doubt you would notice any difference unless you replaced them

I had the very same problem on my vRS TDI estate. Sounded very much like a rear wheel bearing, got the dealer to check it out and low and behold the rear suspension geometry was out. Got the rear tyres changed as they were worn unevenly and its now back to its quiet self, I can now hear all the squeeks and rattles from the cabin now ;-)

No idea if it was a chargable job as its a HSBC lease car so I dont pay for anything.

No, I have put them on the front for now & low & be hold noise moved to front, so tyres knackered for sure.

same problem with mine, had my alignment done today

I have had a problem with noise on my car. Thought initially that it was a wheel bearing or possibly exhaust - dealer found nothing wrong and could not hear it!

Changed the tyres today (do for renewal) and low and behold the noise has gone.

Obviously don't want the new tyres to go the same way as the old so:

Is the suspension geomatary the same think as wheel alignment?

Do this have to be a dealer visit or it to a tyre place?

Any receommended settings or will they just adjust to manufactures settings?

I'm in Leeds - any places to recommend?

Cheers
