410.5 miles from a tank

Featured Replies

Following on from this thread http://briskoda.net/octavia-ii/100-miles-42mpg-tfsi/116309/ where I managed to achieve 40+ mpg on a run I then wondered how many miles I could get out of the tank.

Driving very sedately and sensibly for the last 3 weeks or so I achieved 410.5 miles. It cost nearly £70 to refill the tank too  Typically I would be looking at 280 - 300 miles out of a tank depending on journey length etc.

I couldn't drive like this all the time (I don't think I went over 70mph in any of those 400+ miles!) but it did go to show that there are definite savings to be made with just minor modifications to my driving style

I must admit I enjoyed giving the car a good hoofing this morning - it probably needed it too

interesting. Best I've ever managed is 38mpg and 340 to a tankful. Well done but I bet it was boring!

I regularly get 500 or so miles out of my 105PD and thats with a fair amount of blattering along - my dad who drives a Bora 110 tdi says he gets 600 out of a tank but i frankly dont believe him - he drives far too much like i do to be able to get that sort of economy.

I did just under 400 miles this weekend going up to Manchester, filled up before I left, just on half a tank now :)

Well done but I bet it was boring!

You're not wrong mate - it's about getting the balance right. I just wanted to see what was achieveable.

ouch thats alot of money for 280-300 miles worth of travel.

I've had 700 miles out of mine, perhaps your Dad's Bora engine is looser than yours?

If its a non pd bora the chances are he will achieve that mpg.

To get the 400+ miles I did virtually have to empty the tank so even if I'd driven in my normal less reserved style I'd have probably got a bit more than 300 miles.

I managed just over 400 miles to a tank driving to MK and back once, bloody boring though :)

Managed 468.5 miles in my 56 plate Mk 2 petrol vRS at the end of last month. Because I tend to fill the tank all the way to the brim, I managed to get 58.28 litres in when I filled up afterwards (suggesting I'd only got about 36.5 mpg).

Funny thing was it was on nothing special, just the daily commute to work. It's only about 15miles, but 4miles of that is national speed limit dual carriageway, and about 9 miles of it is single lane 50mph, and since I miss the peak travel periods, most of it is done at pretty optimal speeds - but I'm not shuffling slowly along on the dual carriageway :-)

At one point it did look like I'd get 500 miles out of the tank with something to spare, but once the expected mileage dropped down to about 505, I reckoned it was time to fill up! (Don't mind occasionally leaving it until the trip computer reckons I've only got 30 miles left, but I'm loathe to run it any further).

nah it can be fun seeing if you can keep mpg above a certain limit ;):D

i can get great mpg on drives, , , till i hit MK and all those bloody roundabouts

ive done a thread at http://briskoda.net/racing-advanced-driving-techniques/safed-economy-driving/117623/ which might be useful to anyone trying to get the most mpg out of their car and certainly cheaper than chipping.

700 miles out of a bora or octy ? mine has just hit 20k so i'd reckon it should be decently loose by now. he says his bora is a pd engine but the car is 7 years old so is this possible ??

probably on a decently long trip i could get that figure up a bit but unfortunately the max this car does atm is about 30-40 miles at a go mostly up and down country roads so it rarely gets to cruise along much.

yeah thats what i thought - juuuust checkin!

edit : jeebus! 700 miles is a lot .... how did you ever manage that ?

furthest i've got is 468 (same as JJJ66) in my petrol VRs (that's 42.1mpg). Regularly get over 400miles per tank these days.... Is 500 possible?!

700 miles - are you sure someone wasnt filling it while you weren't looking ;) That is bl00dy good going.

On my first brimmed tank I managed 760 with my 1.9 105 PD estate most of that was motorway though, but I did manage nearly 900 with my superb 1.9 130 PD just as the fuel light came on, I brimmed it in Leon in France and got all the way home to the Scottish Borders.

I have found with both cars you can drive without hardly touching the loud pedal once up to speed and most of the time I dont hang around LOL

not sure really, a lot of motorway travel.

Even better than me ! - awesome

I have a Toledo 110 non PD; 97k on the clock unmodified and the last three tankfuls have been 680, 754 and 732 miles :D

On for another 700+ mile tank.

For my Skoda Superb record is 634, before bottling it and heading to the pumps... however I used to own a ****at 1.9tdi 90bhp and my record on that was 827, i still reckon it was capable of over 1000 but I never had the patience.

I believe that the record in this county is someone owning an Audi 1.9tdi who managed 1300 odd miles from a tank..

That must have been a dull 40mph on the mways jobbie and not using more than 1200rpm!

Yip, I dare say, getting over a 1000 from a tank involves being very boring, except when going over roundabouts etc, whilst maintaining a constant 44mph!

I managed to get 418 miles from my last tank... fuel light hadn't come on yet but I filled it up anyway, still had 10 litres left  not bad for a thirsty focus ST :D

what size of tank, or more to the point how many litres to fill after the 700 miles....
